This is news that sends a very cold chill up my spine. The White House’s reaction to Joe Lieberman’s repeated betrayals is to grant him completely and total power.
Lieberman threw health care reform into doubt Sunday when he told Reid that he would filibuster the bill if it allowed Americans ages 55 to 64 to purchase coverage in Medicare. His comments on CBS’s “Face the Nation” set off a series of private meetings Sunday between the Senate leadership and top White House aides, including Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, who encouraged Reid to cut the deal with Lieberman, the official said. The White House declined to comment.
Rahm Emanuel is leading the charge to convince Obama to officially switch to the new Leibocrat party. The White House’s new plan to pass “health care reform” is to give Lieberman the bill, a big red marker, and tell him to have fun. Line by line, section by section, Lieberman is going to work his way through the bill cutting out every last little piece of reform.
I promise you now that Lieberman knows his power is limitless, his list of demands will only grow. Dropping the public option, the Medicare buy-in, and the CLASS act are only the beginning. I do not know what matter Lieberman will turn his big red marker on next, but I know it will not be pretty (community rating? lifetime caps? Medicaid expansion? minimum benefit requirements?).
This is a very dark day.

John Podesta, the former White House chief of staff who ran President Obama’s transition and still advises the administration on health care and other issues, today expressed confidence that a health care bill will pass despite the news that Sen. Joe Lieberman will filibuster any legislation with a public health insurance option or a Medicare buy-in for 55 year-olds.

PD toolbar!”My guess is that musty folders on reconciliation got dusted off this morning,” Podesta told reporters at a breakfast sponsored by the Christian Science Monitor. The reference was to a budget procedure that requires only 51 votes to pass and can’t be filibustered.
On over 570 occasions folks from the healthcare industry secured an audience with one or another of Barack Obama’s Wall Street sychophants in the White House. And that is just through August. I’m sure Rahm Emanuel’s name was right at or near the top of the lists.
Their behavior might be called shameless but I subscribe to the assumption that they never had any other intention but to bolster the interests of all facets of Wall Street—from healthcare and finance to the military industrial complex.
They are merely engaging the Bilderberg syllabus by reinforcing the post Glass-Steagall political and economic agenda between New York and Washington.
Think of it if you will as another Bernie Maddow scam—but all perfectly legal.
If this heath care bill Does Pass, then Obama should let Lieberman Sign The Bill since GI JOE is the one calling the shots.
He’ll sign the bill and offer Joe the opportunity to make the signing statement:
“The insurance industry salutes you, Mr President, for living up to your promise to change the way things get done in Washington. The Bush administration never dared sink this low in cratering to Wall Street.
“I say that as a great compliment, of course.”
Let me do my translation…when you hear “Make a deal with Lieberman”, they mean make sure Lieberman definitively takes the egg on his face and kills the bill before we switch to reconciliation. I.e. don’t just say we’re going to reconciliation already, because not enough Americans have yet figured out that Lieberman killed the bill. It’s also some make-nice so the White House can try to stay on good terms post-reconciliation with Lieberman for Cap and trade and other issues.
By now you should have noticed a pattern. When the Gang of 6 thought they could come up with a bipartisan miracle, the White House said “at least hear them out.” They got to sound bipartisan, but of course they knew Democrats wouldn’t agree to their weak compromise.
When they tried to reconcile the still very weak Finance bill to the Help, etc. bills, the WH didn’t demand the public option from the Help bill, they said “at least hear them out.” Nice words again, but no surprise, Reid put the public option in the bill.
Now Lieberman and other Gang of 10 members are trying to blow up the whole bill. Once again, the WH makes nice and says “at least hear them out.” But of course the WH knows it doesn’t matter because the momentum has already shifted to reconciliation.
Obama’s style is not to draw lines in the sand. It’s to keep on pushing until your enemy (Lieberman, Nelson,…) shows their ass and gives you the excuse to disregard them. Frustrating, but smart, in the long run
Lieberman was Obama’s mentor when he was in the Senate. Who is really surprised that Obama has all the confidence in the world in Lieberman?
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Wait, 3x, 4x, 5x, lost count
After reading all the blogs and real news,my question is this.Do we have a qualified Democratic candidate for the 2012 presidential election? As we all know, sometimes, shit rolls uphill.I/we had such high hopes for Obama, but,I’m afraid he’s a one term choice. So do we have anyone else in mind?Personally I think Rep. Grayson has the potential. If for no other reason than,he’s not afraid to call a spade,a spade. It may be time to cut our losses and look ahead to 2012.Just a thought…
