As we wait for Blanche Lincoln and Joe Lieberman to dictate the details of the Senate “compromise,” Mike Stark of Stark Reports will be back up on the Hill for FDL, covering Congress.
Yesterday, Mike caught up with Keith Ellison, whose fiery House speech inspired our whip count effort. Remember his stirring words from the floor of the House in June?
I will not vote for any healthcare that does not include a public option. I will not do it, that’s a guaranteed no vote and I will not be dissuaded from that.
It was very inspirational to everyone. We hailed Ellison as a real leader, and over three thousand donors thanked him for his conviction.
Will Ellison stick by that promise? Well, we hope so. Mike put the question to him last night after the Democratic caucus meeting, and this was his response:
Rep. Ellison is certainly right, everyone needs to be doing their part, not just members of Congress. And the burden shouldn’t land solely on him. Health care frauds like Tammy Baldwin, from a perfectly safe Democratic district, who cosponsors H.R. 676, then disappears on the public option and votes for Anna Eshoo’s endless drug company monopolies, are the true problem. And we are recruiting true single payer candidates to run against members like her, to carry the message and make sure people in her district know they can count on her to stand up for health care only when it doesn’t matter.
Nonetheless, with the insurance companies crying “we win,” members of Congress are either going to give them what they want or stop the looting. We hope Keith Ellison will be there when it counts. We already know Tammy Baldwin won’t.
Keith Ellison’s phone: 612-522-1212 (MN), 202-225-4755 (DC)
Tammy Baldwin’s phone: (608) 258-9800 (WI), (202) 225-2906 (DC)

About FDL Action
There is a full court press going on right now to strongarm House Democrats into voting for a bill we can’t know about. All we know is that the insurance companies are saying “we win,” so they apparently know what’s in it.
Things are going to get interesting.
Tammy Baldwin hmm? what has that fraud been doing lately.
If that was his answer to whether he will stick to his promise, I would have to take that as a no. Was that the question? He certainly did not say yes, given the opportunity.
The insurance companies are lying about their books they need government bailouts. They really have kicked in the lobbying.
I’VE HAD IT WITH TAMMY BALDWIN! We’re done for good.
The BIG question. Anyone else catch Grayson praising the Senate garbage last night on Hardball? Couldn’t believe it. Maybe we should be calling his office, too.
Looks like insurance companies have the win-win, we have the lose-lose.
Tammy just wants to “retire”. At this point, if any HCR passes, she’ll declare victory and scoot back to Madison.
It’s like airplanes over O’Hare watching the jockeying for her seat among the state pols. Big sense of entitlement among that bunch. Would love to see an outsider scoop up her seat.
Please tell me this includes Jim Cooper in TN-05, another fraud Democratic district who can’t get his head out of his ass and very much needs to be treated to a single payer candidate to run against him for his seat.
Check out CooperUncovered for a lot more on this weasel:
He voted against the Stimulus.
He voted in favor of Stupak.
We have been in worse positions before. The entire Bush Presidency.
Why is she retiring best news I’ve heard all day.
Ellison’s up on Mc-E dog ‘n pony show. Asks about civilian surge in Afghanistan.
Could Knox be right could Tammy be fleeing a big Lefty election tide?
But did we wait through those years of the failed Bush Presidency and get a Democrat elected to the White House and Democratic majorities in the House and Senate for the bullshit we’re now seeing?
He’s a very good public speaker. That’s a plus in the cause. However, he never qualified what the “public option” meant to him. I think that was a significant omission, given his intelligence.
People like Tammy have tons of insurance cash, they are protected by the Prince of Puddle Darkness Rahm. Why would she be thinking of leaving?
No formal announcement, just common knowledge that she’s waiting for HCR, her signature issue, to pass so she can retire back home where her partner is on the state Public Service Commission, or was last I checked.
So we keep fighting what else can we do.
We need a score card on Blue Dogs retiring or rumored to be retiring.
Ellison was not very good on the Afghan Q. Just wants a bigger civilian surge.
Ellison made many representations subsequent to that where he was clear about what he meant, and it wasn’t “triggers.”
If Tammy Baldwin is going to call this a “success” on her “signature issue,” I can say nothing more damning.
I was hoping that was the case. Thanks for filling in.
Agreed. I was just saying we have good reason to stay energized, fight on, push the Dems and hold them accountable. After the disaster that was Bush, we need them to do so much better than they are. And there’s no excuse for them doing less.
Call Melissa Bean out.
Call Anna Eshoo out.
Tell Jim Cooper to take a walk.
Mike Ross, thanks for nothing, you corrupt a$$hole.
Why are these people given a forum to influence important legislation for the worse rather than being shown the exit?
Quite agree and share your disappointment. My sense is she wants out and will take something rather than nothing so she can exit now.
Jane has a fresh cross-post up: “Reid Says No Time For Conference, But Takes Off For Fundraiser”
Or stupid unemployment at 10% which means people don’t have healthcare and she is fighting against them getting healthcare.
A corporate job or lobbyist gig are her only choice good paying gigs yes.
So our next job stopping Congress from trading favors for good paying jobs/ bribes later.
No rest for the wicked…and we are the most wicked take no crap bunch I’ve seen.
I should’ve added that it’s great to have an FDL camera crew on the scene, documenting the health care reform carnage.
Oh I saw what you said yesterday on that thread with the trolls you got what the Lake is about much more than that troll claiming old timer status.
I was right about thinking you would be good for the Lake. Wish you had the chance to meet Kateymine she was great with new people.
Jane -
wrt Rep Ellison’s call for a multi front approach – we have their phone numbers, I want to know why they don’t have ours. why aren’t they tearing a page from your or HCAN’s book and issuing directives, targets, goals to progressives en masse – eg, their FB page
not complaining, for all I know there is some rule (ethics or otherwise) that precludes this. resource limitations ?
am still a bit loopy and undercaffeinated but if anything, we are one under utilized resource
God Bless Mike Stark
Seconded! I wonder if we can get them to ask Congresspeople on Camera if they think its fair that American drug companies sell drugs to Commie Countries for cheaper than they charge us Americans!
Pick the biggest right winger we can get and ask that question first because after that GOPers and Blue Dogs will run from the Lake’s camera crew!
There is an old joke never stand between a politician and a Camera, I think we can change that and show the MSM how the Wicked get stuff done!
Not sure interesting is the best word to describe what will happen.
Jane,
George Fountas vs. MA DOR COMM MA APPEALS DOCKET #2009-p-525.
Oral arguments are scheduled for today in Boston. Mr. Fountas is appealing Pro Se an Essex Superior Court case which is related to “HEALTH INSRANCE MANDATES.” “Here a man was denied a jury trial by his peers.” Mr. Fountas was fined by the DOR as required by Massachusetts Health care Reform Mandate for failure to associate and enter into a contract with a health insurer. You know! One of those “TAX EXEMPT” and ANTI TRUST EXEMPT CORPORATE INSURERS, supposedly relieving the the burdens of government at state and federal levels, by usurping and undermining the constitutional rights of all Americans as “We the People are rendered subservient to Corporate Financial institutions and now segregationist of risk in the form of mandated contractual associations with corporations under fear of tax penalty, i.e. economic forced coercion like that of a King? The very corporations which gut us?
I like that 13th Amendment

Thanks, my friend. =D
Yesterday was an odd day round here with all those trolls. Not sure what they thought they’d accomplish. Just showed us all that they’re afraid of us being heard and making a difference.
Wicked might work:)
Someone start burning the sage around here to keep the trolls out. Don’t enjoy the screaming anger streaming out of ‘em.
Yeah trolls do seem to come out when there is an issue they are afraid of Al Gore winning the Nobel the trolls came out in force 3 am at the huff post Karl must have given them all beepers.
I second that. Glad to have Knoxy around.
Lisa was thinking of buying a Goat. Next we need a bridge to push them off of.
Karl? I’m thinking Newt. Or maybe Dick Armey.
Actually, my first and last thought about the trolls yesterday was that they were from OFA, which would be the biggest insult from Obama after the injury he is inflicting on people by backing this farce of health care “reform,” using the money people donate to him – because they put their hopes in him – to undermine legislation that would actually help them.
Thanks!
OFA?
We can’t do this with a 1 or 2 election cycle trick pony. The Rethugs have spent a lot of cash over the last 30+ years building their organization and managing to install moles in every part of the federal govt. To say nothing of the lobbyists who now form a shadow govt. One of the reasons that happened is the Dems got complacent after the VN pullout. One of the things that has helped us partially overcome that advantage is the intertoobz, which the Rethugs just don’t seem to be able to master. Long row to hoe and not without it’s disappointments.
Just called Ellison’s office to let them know that just because Rahm says they need a bill — ANY bill — before Christmas doesn’t make it so, and that a Rahm-favored public-option-less bill that forces people to buy insurance that costs more and covers less (or else pay thousands in fines) is what will demoralize progressives going into next year, just as Rahm’s ramming through NAFTA in 1993 caused the betrayed Democratic base to stay home in 1994.
Emphasize these points, over and over again, when you call:
1) A bad mandate-packed bill without even a PO will hurt Dems FAR FAR MORE than no bill at all, much less a good bill. Don’t be stampeded by fake deadlines into committing electoral suicide.
2) Rahm is the same genius who gave us NAFTA in 1993, which caused millions of unhappy Dems to stay home the next year. Obama and Congressional Dems listen to him at their peril.
Organizing for America. The Obama people used the campaign email list from Obama for America to form this cheerleading org.
Your a Wicked genius:)
Identify the troll?
I was thinking they were Dem trolls too just wanted to clarify ha we got them worried! They retreat we advance Sun Tze!
One has been here about 6 weeks. Has gotten increasingly hostile when disagreed with.
One was Justice claimed to be a long timer here the other some weird name.
Huh. I live in Baldwin’s district, and had wondered what she was up to with HCR, since she’s been all but invisible this year. Now I know.
I guess I can call this afternoon, but I’m not sure what to say. I hate the Senate bill with a fiery passion, but the House version was also terrible beyond words, and we already know she’s on board with big Pharma. Between Stupak, the extremely crippled exchange, biologics, and the awful, completely inadequate subsidies, I’m rooting for the whole process to die. A bad bill is worse than no bill at all, because a bad bill will guarantee 3 more years of inaction while we all dutifully wait for our health care ponies to arrive.
I would be more than happy to work for and financially support a single payer candidate for this district against her next year though.
Is FDL gonna oppose the bill or not?
When will you come to a decision?
As of this minute, it seems that FDL won’t take ANY position. You seem to be afraid to call for defeat
*Aargh* Please take that sorry diatribe elsewhere…! We’ve wearied of your wayward ways…!!!
