Sen. Debbie Stabenow is prepared to kill the public option to make Joe Lieberman and Blanche Lincoln happy:
Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI)–a staunch public option supporter, told reporters she’d be happy with a health care bill without a public option, so long as it accomplishes the public option’s imperatives of lowering costs and providing competition.
Well, Sen. Stabenow, the goal of the public option was not just to lower costs and provide competition. It was also meant to keep the insurance companies honest, ensure everyone had access to at least one decent plan designed for the public good, and to prevent this reform bill from becoming a massive corporate boondoggle that funnels billions of taxpayer dollars into private insurance coffers.
The bill will give hundreds of billions in federal dollars to the private insurance companies and force millions of Americans to hand over hundreds of billions more. That money will go to the same corporations that have done everything possible to kill meaningful reform. They will use this government-provided bailout to eventually lobby to remove what little regulation this bill will put in place, and to stop future reform efforts.
I wonder if what the people of Michigan really want is for Stabenow to force hard-working Americans to buy extremely expensive, poorly regulated, junk insurance. Forcing people to give their money to the same companies that ruined meaningful reform will only make them larger, rich, more powerful, and more profitable.

EW is in Michigan can’t wait for her take on this
I was pissed off at this too, but it’s just pie in the sky moderation since I don’t think the progressives will allow this plan to get voted on. Stabenow will have 2 choices: vote yes for a public option through reconciliation, or no for nothing. She’ll of course choose the former.
This grasping at “reconciliation” as some magic cure-all is annoying… by Bast’s furry ears have you not been listening?
Reconciliation is out.
Reid said so… and because it was a complete capitulation to the corporates I do believe him in this.
If reconciliation is all that you have left to hope for then I’m truly sorry to say that you have nothing left to hope for.
If you think the Democrats have really taken it off the table completely you are crazy. They will not allow themselves to pass nothing.
I was not clear, sorry.
What you’d get with reconciliation is, perforce, the same corporate-mandated shit sandwich you’d get without reconciliation. There will be only a cosmetic advantage, at best, for progressives if reconciliation was allowed… which it won’t be.
The excuse for folding under reconciliation would be something amazingly inane like “to soften the blow and not seem so arrogant”… the reality would be that the corporations need a foil and the Republicans are too screwed up right now to act as proper foils and cannot give way on cue.
It would be amusing though. I predicted massive Dem kabuki as the end game approached… but the Dems are acting more like a horde of meth-addicted zombies dancing in an ice rink wired with 10,000 volts. So watching them go into overdrive trying to capitulate under reconciliation would be side-splittingly hilarious :)
To bad it’s not going to happen… I could use a good laugh about now.
Don’t try to reason with an internet commenter whose ego depends on excluding reality.
The reality is that if the Dems are forced to use reconciliation they will use it to benefit the corporations… not the progressives. Or anyone else who’s not a CEO for that matter.
But the optics would not be so good with that and thus there will be simply be no reconciliation.
As for “denial of reality”… that would be like, say, thinking that the Dem leadership will actually choose people over corporations in this matter.
