Well she talked a good game, but in the end, Blanche Lincoln blinked. She didn’t take me up on my dare to filibuster health care. She’ll get another chance when the cloture vote on the final bill comes up, but for now, she says she’ll allow debate to proceed.
But I get the feeling she didn’t like our ad:
Blanche threw down hard against “government run health care,” too. I’m getting the feeling we pissed her off.

About FDL Action
I do believe we did. hee hee
Ha! Moderates used to think they had everyone else by the cajones. I hope this puts and end to those days.
But I must have missed something. When did Lieberman say “yes” to a procedural vote on a bill with the public option in it??
Good. More of the same, comin’ up.
Blanche must be as confused as I am. We have been reading for quite awhile that the people of Arkansas were for the public option – or health care fixed in some form or other. Two days ago CQ showed that a poll indicated that somewhere in the 40% range said they would vote against Blanche if she supported this bill. Can’t find it now though.
Gee, like that’s a bad thing to do, huh?
Blanche, as a former president once said, if ya can’t stand the heat…
Thats a good thing right?? I mean she sure doesn’t seem to be listening to the people of her state!! So “WE” went after with ads and a FREE health Clinc in her state… What a BiT*he she is…
Jane,
Near the end of her pompous speech, I heard Blanche very explicitly say that she will vote against cloture if there is a public option still in the bill by the end of debate.
In fact, before and after saying that she will vote against cloture for any bill that has a public option in it, she said that she won’t be held accountable by “other groups outside my state.”
She was claiming to be a victim of “other groups outside my state” who are out to get her, while all she’s doing is what the people of her state want her to do.
That’s the bullshit she’s trying to sell.
Yup, I’d say we pissed her off. *g*
Sorry if this is a repost….
Main Entry: blanch
Pronunciation: ˈblanch
Function: verb
Etymology: Middle English blaunchen, from Anglo-French blanchir, from blanc, adjective, white — more at blank
Date: 15th century
transitive verb
: to take the color out of: as a : to bleach by excluding light b : to scald or parboil in water or steam in order to remove the skin from, whiten, or stop enzymatic action in (as food for freezing) c : to make ashen or pale
intransitive verb
: to become white or pale
Yeah, I am sure she voted to allow the debate to proceed because of you. Damn, your arrogance makes that of every Senator in the chmaber combined look mild. Furthermore, she explicitly stated, as the commenter above me pointed out, that she will filibuster this bill if the public option is not removed. So now there are three Senators who have explicitly stated they will filibuster, Lieberman, Landrieu and Lincoln, and one senator, Ben Nelson, who has strongly implied he will. Given the position of the left-wing Senators and House Reps. if they were telling the truth about voting against the thing if it doesn’t have a public option, when Reid finally is forced to boot the public option to get final passage, he will be effectively killing the bill.
The Public Option is more popular than many of the Blue Dogs in their own districts. Despite the Media Pundits saying the Public Option was dead us and the Unions sans media coverage showed them otherwise.
Corker: “Most people in Tennessee know that the costs of their private insurance is going to go up as a result of this legislation.”
No, they believe that that’s what’s going to happen, though it won’t.
I wonder why so many people in Tennessee believe such nonsense…
Not listening to the people of her state? What the hell are you talking about? This bill is extremely unpopular in Arkansas, and it is becoming increasingly more unpopular nationwide. If she were truly listening to her constituents, she would vote against proceeding to debate this piece of crap bill. And frankly, why would anyone with half a brain care about a free clinic organized by a psycho with abysmal TV ratings?
Yeah, shame four Senators are promising to filibuster the public option. The public option has about as much chance of passing the Senate as you have of jumping off the Sears Tower and living.
Doesn’t it also mean fear like when your face loses all color? Cause I swear I’m smelling Fear!
They Retreat we Advance! (and No Glen Beck Sun Tze said that way before Mao did)
Insurance won’t go up because of this? That’s odd, because the CBO analysis specifically stated that the public option would lead to an increase in insurance premiums. Maybe you should read the fucking analysis before you make a fool of yourself.

I know, it is very tempting…
I couldn’t keep watching these Repuke asses read from their scripts… how fucking phony do they really think we will swallow such swill??
I’m very comfortable making a fool of myself if it means learning from my mistakes.
The public option isn’t the only thing in the legislation.
What’s the exchange for?
Ms. Lincoln seems unlikely to remain a public employee long enough for liberals to worry about her ability to seek retribution. She seems to equate disservice to her constituents – whose health care ranks only slightly ahead of their neighbors living in last placed Mississippi – as a badge of honor in service to Walmart and her local health insurer monopolist. There’s a place for those with such priorities, and it’s on K Street, not on the public dole as a Senator.
Time for Troooollll Binnngggggo.
I didn’t know Glenn Becky helped organize the free clinic in Arkansas.
Four Blue Dogs I take it Rahm’s boy’s? If so well then Rahm has no one else to blame but himself. A Real Chicago Fixer would have those four Senators out for lunch and explain all the various ways their campaign funds would dry up, exactly what they and their Relatives, Friends and Mistresses were going to be investigated for and what scoops the Trib was going to publish about them in next weeks Sunday Paper.
We the Left don’t get blamed if Blue Dogs Filibuster.
I thought the word “blanched” meant something more than what I read in that dictionary quote.
She blanched at the idea of …..you’ve heard that, right?
What I was initially looking for.

[Mod Note: No personal insults of fellow commenters], there is no longer a Sears Tower.
Speaking of Glenn Beck, wasn’t he supposed to make his announcement about a half hour ago about his taking the reins of the 9.12 Project going into 2010? And wasn’t that announcment timed to coincide with his new book “Arguing with Idiots” or something like that?
Sorry I don’t follow the Beckster. He’s a bit too psychotic for me.
Knoxville, do you get flamed often? It only hurts for a second, but do not get mad, make the “Health Policy Makers” in DC mad. They may start monitoring FDL soon. Good work.
Is this Mr Blanche defending his fair wife?
Aren’t you the chivalrous gentleman.
(Although you might slow down a bit on the insults to fellow commenters. The Mods here at FDL do tend to frown on such things)
This piece is in today’s St Pete Times.
At the risk of making an even bigger fool of myself, can someone provide a link to the part of the CBO analysis that refers to the public option leading to an increase in insurance premiums? I distinctly remember reading that the House and Senate bills would significantly reduce costs for families, the House’s bill more so than the Senate’s bill.
You talking about the comment @ 16? I’m still trying to figure out wtf that was. What do you mean by getting flamed?
Pissed. Blanche leaves a bad taste.
I could feel my blood pressure becoming dangerously high as I listenend to Hatch, Brownback, and the other ass go on and on about abortion. When Blanche the B**ch finished her line of bullshit I was sure blood would spurt forh from my ears. If she’s going to railroad the public option, why the hell didn’t she just go ahead and kill the whlole god-damn thing now instead of continuing this charade. By the time all is said and done we will be left with another bill served up on a silver platter that benefits the insurance and pharma industries and leaves an ass-load of people uninsured. Why? Because that’s the American way.
[Mod Note: Let's not go over that particular line please]
Everyone’s health insurance costs go up every year, and yes, they may still increase even if we have the public option. What’s new? Big Ins CEOs gotta make that $90million a year salary or bitter Beckstir teabaggers gonna cry a river for po, po Big Ins CEOs.
If Reid didn’t have to promise/cave in to former/current Big Ins tool Ben Nelson to drop the anti-trust regs from the HCR bill, then we might all enjoy more competition for heath care ins, which would – gee whiz – LOWER everyone’s health care ins costs.
The bitter irony here is that the public option is all about MORE market competition, not less, which, in theory (and yeah: it jest be da theory), is what Republics are allegedly all about. You know: allowing the vaunted “marketplace” to do it’s thing and have prices be set according to supply and demand.
So us mis-named socialists over here in leftie-ville are actually the ones trying to push for more, not less, competition. sheesh.
I’m still hoping someone will correct what I wrote above if I’m wrong, but I don’t think I am.
I recall hearing Blanche Lincoln explicitly say near the end of her assholish speech that she will vote against cloture if there is a public option still in the bill at that time.
We move forward. Keep the pressure on. Stay positive and see what happens.
That was a troll (likely paid) that, along with all the other right wingers, doesn’t have even a passing acquaintence with reality. So he just makes shit up and types it. And likely gets paid for it. Ain’t America great!
http://www.politico.com/blogs/glennthrush/1009/Ark_poll_Public_option_popular_Lincoln_not.html
My Bold It must be remembered that Blanche is a Center Dem meaning she has been running this entire time trying to kill healthcare her voters know that Healthcare is all thats been in the news for months.
Despite this stand she has not won over Republican and independent voters in her state.
So tell me what happens to her election chances if 29% of the likely voters in her state suddenly decide to cast a No vote?
She tried to get the Republicans for months that plan failed. She can’t come back in the polls if we walk:)
Ever so much to pissed about. So little time to have a good life.
Still, what can we do?
I heard the exact same thing
What you do not know the kompooter meaning of “flame”? Wiki says
Hey. That #40 could have been a response to my #43, but it hadn’t posted yet.
Are you always this omnipotent? T’is why cbl is such a blessed girl.
Hatch again? Sheesh, he’s already run me off once today.
I won’t be letting anyone with a passing acquaintence with reality make me think it ain’t. *g*
Paid trolls only come out when the GOP is nervous I guess they got done attacking Sarah’s facebook page:)
You’re thinkin of oldnslow, cbl2′s scooter boy.
Damn. I got flamed. =D
You’re right. Thanks. Guess it’s nappy tappy time for moi.
Remember when we had a bunch of different mommy names? I’m usually on top of it, but, sister’s tired. :)
I believe the anti-trust exemption repeal will be offered as an amendment or possibly as a free-standing bill, but i could be confused about that.
And I thought Beck’s book was titled “I Am with the Idiots”, my mistake (or not).
Welcome to the club. *g*
The Dems have internal polls we don’t see what do you want to bet Blanche saw one and changed her mind?
What do you want to bet Jane’s ad was having an effect? I would love to see those numbers. Remember the Dems have the Dem mailing/internet contact list of not only likely voters but Dem Donors and Volunteers lets call these folks Double Plus Dems they fund campaigns knock on doors etc.
I bet the Double Plus Dem numbers really Really sucked.
You’re cool, dude. Flamin’ hot is not always a bad thing.
Just depends on who’s got the finger on the trigger. My experience, anyways.
These Republican colloquy hours are fucking ridiculous.
Both my senators are now spouting bullshit.
Your opportunity to hit the head, have a smoke, make a sandwich, grab a beer…
I wrote my 42 to back you up Blanche might be unpopular now despite trying very hard to win over GOPers. But after months of trying she is even lower with them in the polls. Pissing us off 29% of voters will not vote for her no Public Option well there is no way she can come back from that.
Unless the troll can promise that Blue Dogs will get GOP votes which they are not getting then why should the Blue Dogs piss us off and guarantee they will lose?
It ended too fast. I’m gonna stay and listen to my friend Schumer.
That’s all they’ve got. They are obsessed with the number of pages of a bill set up for physical markup. Only the left third of the page is printed on, hence Whitehouse’s comparison with a Harry Potter novel. They got nothing but bullshit and they know it.
Flame wars and troll squashing can be fun…but generally we try to avoid feeding the trolls by responding to them cause they love attention and then we never get rid of them.
what are you watching it on? excuse the dangling participle there. cnn has lots of voice over and c-span has a flu hearing where i am.
Indeed I saw your comment @ 42, though I didn’t realize it was to me. What pissed me off was her bullshit that all her woes are the result of groups outside her state that are out to get her, while she’s just trying to do what the people of her state want her to do. No, she’s not doing what the people of Arkansas want her to do.
Btw, Glenn Thrush at Politico should have pointed out that Firedoglake ran an ad in Arkansas calling out her bullshit.
C-Span 2
Watching the debate on the Senate floor on C-SPAN 2.
Had I realized I was being flamed by a friendly troll, I definitely wouldn’t have responded. But thinking that I might have misunderstood something about the CBO analysis, I was trying to get him or her to give me some evidence to back up the bs.
If your cable company doesn’t provide C-Span 2 it’s here online.
Thanks, I don’t get that apparently but picked it up on the web in time to hear the excellent Sen. Amy.
So far I’m pleased Wyden’s amendment goes in, that’s a big expansion of the public option right there, and some of the things I’ve read online regarding early opt-ins I like a lot also.
Gotcha but remember the Trolls are not friendly they are negative attention seeking hacks who need a fight no matter how stupid the reason is to feel good about themselves.
Paranoid Losers are like that i heard somewhere that Hitler was like that in the bunker in the end he was blaming everyone even the German people.
Do you have a link where we can watch speeches that were made earlier? I’m still trying to figure out if I heard Blanche Lincoln correctly near the end of her speech. I could swear she said that she will vote against cloture if there is a public option still in the bill at that time. Seems like an important point!
Knox asked:
http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2009/11/21/806776/-Reid-Gets-His-60-Votes,-For-Now
It was as explicit as Knox thought it was.
Perhaps she’ll blink on that one as well.
But it’s pretty clear we’re moving towards the Carper-Snowe Trigger, with Landrieu throwing it down as what’s needed to keep her (Trigger or No Bill), while Blanche can jump off and Harry gains President Snowe.
It’s rather loathsome, but that we’re headed that way is obvious since Schumer is out in front of it leading the way to give it “Progressive Credibility”. We also know that it’s what Rahm always wanted.
Jane: you need to keep working, and get back to the old Narrative: Triggers Are Designed To Never Be Triggered. Another trip to Rachel’s show is needed.
There no doubt that we’re going to be told that it’s simply a method to get the PO through the Senate and that in Conference we’ll have a Shinny PO thanks to the House.
And we all know that bullshit. Things are being gamed again with a tail of 3-6 Senators wagging the entire caucus that already has compromised on the PO half a dozen times.
John
She can blame us all she wants, so long as we help the people of Arkansas get rid of her.
Yep.
Still, till that moment comes up, I won’t hold breath for much.
Sides, ES hasn’t spoken to Blanched, yet.
When he does, she’s toast.
*G*
Thanks Mz. Hamsher for a quick update.
As I’ve been saying for a few days now, we may not be winning all we want, but we sure are pissing off all the right folks because of a growing electorate that’s becoming more well informed about details.
And that awareness is due to YOUR efforts, Mz. Hamsher and FLD.
Well done, ma’am . . . I might not see what I WANT to see in my lifetime, but I sure feel better about the ground gained as more and more folks become better educated about our governement, our processes and procedures for rule, about our corporate feudalist designs.
And I’m giddy we ARE pissing people off, with that growing knowledge and advocacy.
Thanks for the leadership.
Yeah, it’s not as if it were part of their jobs to actually read the damn thing rather than waste all their time whining about how big it is.
Oh wait. It IS part of their jobs to read these bills. Having had to read and understand 300 page technical documents for DoD systems over the years and having a week to read, digest, comment and respond, I don’t think I have much sympathy for their complaints on this.
But then I actually had to work for a living rather than dining out on Quail Wings and going to Beltway Cocktail parties every night.
Tempting?
Heh, that ain’t the HALF of it!
*G*
AMEN!
C-Span has archives. Ratcheer.
Oops, that’s for the 20th, yesterday. Today isn’t up yet. Sorry.
Shame on you, Blanche.
I also recall her saying it even more explicitly a few moments later, that she would vote against cloture if there is still a public option.
A trigger is totally not acceptable.
She did, yer right, and it ain’t over till it’s over.
They all lie, all the time.
But yer spot on, and thanks for comments I’ve read up to this one!
*G*
shit Teddy is sure prolific this morning…
Man I’d LOVE a job like that!!
*G*
..with Landrieu throwing it down as what’s needed to keep her…
Actually, what *I* heard Landrieu say was that she needs another $200M.
What’s the old line? “We’ve already established what you are – now we’re just haggling over the price”?
I love Troll Bingo.
Although I prefer Wack-a-Troll.
I believe all these wankers have offices’ full of Senate aids to read the bill and provide them with an executive summary. Or they could just use the one on the White House website.
He is. Eve, too.
And this is just a few samples, on one day, in one town, on the Democrat’s watch.
Although I prefer Wack-a-Troll.
Don’t look at me – I get along beautifully with everybody.
heh.
See the faces of the people of Arkansas, Blanche. The shame is all yours.
Scary thought is that she might actually win, getting a trigger to block a public option from ever being realized.
See tosh’s comment @ 74.
*snort*
A good synopsis and call, thanks.
Gamed again sums it up.
History reveals the House has SELDOM trumped the Senate in Chamber Conference.
What passed The Senate is likely to be the large part of what Obama will sign.
But, the process is NOT over.
Nor is our rage.
Ahem, a bit of a menu contention on my part.
Brandy Lobster Cream Sauce over Maine Lobster washed down with Louis XII from fine large crystal snifters.
Just sayin . . ;-)
Just remember, both Reid and Lincoln are mighty vulnerable next year. Reid had better push for a public option and let Lincoln sink only herself, or they’re both going down.
kind of OT – any idea why neither Harry Reid nor Miss McConnell have popped their heads out yet today?
Meanwhile, My Senator Kicks Ass:
Franken kicks ass, part one
Franken kicks ass, part two
they were there in the beginning, it was quite a show
True it is the Dems watch but who created this mess??
I know it just the way the Republicans work.. But Always against anything the DEMS do and always for Corporate interests and screw the people…
The only way to stop this is for “The People” to join in at YouStreet
Can’t speak for others.
But for me, either we get REAL reform, or, Repugs and Blue Dogs kill present reform legislation in BOTH chambers.
I’m ok with either. GOP and their policy and practices get blamed!
We primary Blue Dogs all to shit in ’10 and ’12.
We put pressure on Obama/Rham.
And NONE of what happens hands the GOP an upper hand in ’10, ’12 OR ’14!
Total win factor, given what we face.
We the people and the prog/lib masses ain’t gonna get what we need, or what we want, ASAP, and I’m sad about that.
But, we all ARE paving the way for better times ahead.
And in the process, sending a message and scaring the shit out of the status quo.
I want more, but I’ll take what we have, and what we can get, knowing that in MY life (roughly 20+ years left) I can’t possibly ever get what I wanted back in the 60′s when I was in my teens.
My wife’s older than I, and I deeply regret I can’t get her a better end game before we both go.
But, she’s sharp, hip, and told me we just get the best we can for ourselves, while working for others younger than us and for their future.
I’m a lucky human, lemme tell ya, for my wife. She keeps me sane. And clear, and honest and focused on what WE believe are the RIGHT things in life, for us and for others.
She’s so progressive in ways I can’t articulate that transcend politics and belief systems.
‘K, sorry, ’nuff of my luck in life . . . back to The Senate!!!
;-)
oh.
thank you.
Jane,
Please consider putting up a post with a link to FDL Action’s Fund Organizers in Arkansas: Dare Blanche Lincoln to Filibuster the Public Option.
http://www.actblue.com/page/dareblanchelincoln
Maybe you could put it up with a video clip of her saying on C-SPAN 2 near the end of her speech today that she will vote against cloture if there is still a public option after the Senate debates it.
Attractive aide has been in the background quite a bit this past hour.
Rethugs. ugh. Gonna go feed the squirrels and get a sub.
Namaste
Hey Larue say what you have to.. your words teach all of us..
I just don’t think it’s about Reid and Blanched.
It’s about corporate control of what legislation passes.
If the legislation is shit, and all sign point out that it WILL be . . .
Why not advocate to kill it?
Openly?
Oh, yeah. We need to let the GOP take responsibility for killing shit HCR, so dem’s don’t lose at ’10, ’12 and ’14.
Which is good long term strategy.
Sadly, our prog/lib wants and needs for our country are not immediately met.
But we ain’t gonna get them met fast, anyways.
And that means that we end up accepting that 45K humans will die for lack of health care (fuck coverage) every year, and that means that others will be lost too, as we progress forward.
And it means our country’s standard of living will continue to erode, and that us folks in our 50′s are NOT gonna see any real mass improvements, or personal improvements, in our life time.
For us IN our 50′s or more, this is quite a shock to know we’ve long passed our highest standard of living and it will only erode as we age to our end.
That’s just an adaptation me and mine are forced to accept.
Now I only pray that I can find work, and we BOTH can work long into our 70′s.
Cuz we won’t be getting SS like we thought, if at all.
And like others, any savings we had has been wiped out due to market crashes and hitting our savings for present living while out of work.
What happens to folks who can’t pay apartment rent anymore, who are in their mid 50′s to early 60′s?
What happens?
Enjoy SD… I am having left over Chinese… Su Hong.. I am sure Newt knows that one..
We have to talk about money and budgets NOT people’s problems! We love David Broder! What a bunch of assholes! Going out for a smoke.
Ah my RC friend . . . thanks, I get a bit caught up in it all personally, sometimes.
Share what I shouldn’t from a personal level.
I appreciate your kind words and indulgence in my personal stuff.
It’s HARD adjusting to a lower standard of life than ya ever thought you’d have.
And it’s sad, wishing ya could do better for your spouse, after all those dreams and promises, long ago.
Huh, funny. KVMR is spinning ‘Across The Great Divide’, by Kate Wolf. Not a political thing, not a standard of living thing. Just originally penned about self introspection.
But today? That Great Divide . . . lord, it looms large in our lives.
Namaste, hoss.
McPain is making a fool of himself… AGAIN! These pukes and I will give them credit for it sure do stick together and try and kill this bill… But listening to them sure is worth the mute button… they say a lot of shit but it is all smoke and mirrors of what they are really saying is NO to ANYTHING and FUCK the little people!! “
Kyl, AZ, now flappin his lips.
I need a break . . . some daylight maybe . . . pick a few tunes, anything.
B Bak L8r!
You Pups hold the fort, and keep the snark strong!
but of course!!
I’m getting the feeling we pissed her off.
Good. That’s all i can say that won’t get me modded.
Florida subs generally suck. better than the pizza though. And the bagels….. don’t even mention….
You have an excellent screen name.
Also, John McCain is suddenly on the side of women? Barf.
Reid can use reconciliation or the nuclear option. If he fails to do either, he’s responsible for killing this bill, and he’s going down next year for it.
Corker felt safe in claiming because regardless of whether the bill passes or not the price is going up 40-50% in the band-aid period, and Corker knows it.
Great clips!
…and you have a great screen presence, Jane!
