This Stupak amendment is another reason to use reconciliation. It is a far-reaching measure that could eventually lead to the end of all abortion coverage.
Surprise! Sen. Ben Nelson wants the Stupak amendment now, too. It is good that the amendment will likely need 60 votes to make it into the Senate bill.
Jim Cooper Discusses the Stupak amendment while conveniently not saying that he voted for it.
This is what Planned Parenthood, NARAL, NOW, etc. should have done as a strategic counter strike. Will they at least score voting for what they call one of the biggest restrictions on reproductive choice in years?
Don’t expect much, NARAL put Lincoln Chaffee on their board after he voted for cloture on Alito.
Rep. Degette is trying to create a pro-choice block.
Kucinich did not even try to whip votes to force his state single payer amendment into the House bill.
If you vote against very conservative reform because it is “too liberal,” why are you even a Democrat?

About FDL Action
I THINK THE STUPAK AMENDMENT IS A SOPHOMORIC MISDIRECTION PLAY to get Dems frenzied against anything but the deplorable Bill the House has sent to the Senate. It’s a present to Pelosi who without it would have been ridiculed for passing along the dribble she did.
My guess is, after a tremendous fight the amendment will be dropped, & Dems who would’ve been outraged by the HealthCare Bill’s specifics, had they not been distracted, will be excited because they won.
This thing stinks from the top to the bottom. How can these elected “representatives of the people” treat their Constituents with such disdain? (That’s rhetorical, the answer is BECAUSE they have more in common with their Republican cohorts than they do with us.)
Because they can. I mean, who’s to stop the Republican/Democratic Coalition from doing whatever they feel like? They work for corporate bribes, and they can’t be voted out of office, because you always have to vote for either a Democrat or a Republican. It’s the perfect racket.
