Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA) was orginally scheduled to be the keynote speaker at the Palm Beach County Democratic Party’s annual fundraiser. (The fundraiser had previously been known as the Jefferson-Jackson dinner, but this year was renamed the Truman-Kennedy-Johnson dinner.) Landrieu was disinvited by the local party committee because she has not yet decide to support cloture on health care reform.
Landrieu, a moderate who recently described herself as “extremely concerned about a government-run, taxpayer-funded, national public plan,” has not committed to voting to cut off a likely Republican filibuster and forcing a vote on the legislation.
Democrats need 60 votes to invoke “cloture” and force a vote.
“We just didn’t want to have a keynote speaker who’s not committed to cloture. It would have just been wrong,” said Siegel, who said party higher-ups and rank-and-file members had voiced displeasure with the choice of Landrieu as a keynoter.
Voting against a bill you don’t agree with is one thing. Joining with Republicans to prevent one of the most important Democratic pieces of legislation in decades from getting an up-or-down vote in the Senate is another. To the Palm Beach Democratic Party, it is was step too far.

And my teeny, tiny, tiny violin!
Good on the Palm Beach Dems.

Dems with spines. I like it.
I hope Randi Rhodes had something to do with this. Suck on that, traitor Landrieu.
Hard to believe anyone would invite her to anything other than a Halloween zombie party anyhow.
I am glad someone is able to hold her feet to the fire. I am so frustrated with her right now.
This is excellent news, and nice work getting rid of our party’s slave-owning and native-genociding forefathers from their annual fundraiser, too. These are both great examples for other local parties. Hope everyone follows suit.
Has anyone got a statement on this from Landrieu’s office? Or is the waaaaaahmbulance still on its way to pick her up?
Should we call WHINE-one-one and follow up?
Naaaaahhh.
Local Dems with spine. Me Likey!

I don’t imagine Rahm is pleased that one of his proteges got dissed by the unwashed masses.
I wove you, Teddy.
Methinks Rahm should probably get used to not having his way.
Can these people demonstrate what having a spine is all about to Harry Reid.
My congratulations to party activists for standing up to a ConservaDem. I wonder if her “indecision” was about getting something in return for her cloture vote or about her personal vanity.
I always hate when conservative Democrats are described as “moderate”. It goes to the bastardization of our political discourse which makes the unreasonable sound reasonable by changing its name.
She is a classic New Orleanian conservadem/repug turnip.
Nice action by the group. Its critical that what a person does has consequences.
Watch out for Wallstreet, if risk-reward & consequences are not done right its even worse when considering they can also buy these reprehensible reps.
I hope she sticks to her guns and does what she can to kill this legislation. It is bad legislation and will set back the cause of health care reform for at least a generation. Obama has faked out the public again, as he did to get elected. At some point, you’re going to wake up and smell the coffee – or maybe you won’t.
Maybe a stupid question but where is Palm Beach County?
Florida has a GOP Governor right, they had Jeb as Go before that so is it a purple state? Cause the Florida Dems are right now showing plenty of Spine. One would expect Moderates to be especially appealing in the Purple States.
But Landrieu got publicly dissed and in politics especially Moderate Politics it takes extreme action to provoke that kind of response.
Of course I approve of this action I am just very very surprised:)
So you’ve seen the final bill with your super magic crystal ball, have you?
Its great that the FLA dems are beating up Ms. Landreau for her not supporting cloture. Why in the hell cant the President and senate leadership do the same thing?
Well she is between the GOP and Us on issues. However think of a teeter totter with 6 kids on one side and the GOP and Blue Dogs as one kid with two personalities on the other end. As far as Popular opinion is concerned Landrieu is a GOPer.
After all we already compromised I wanted and still want the same Healthcare France or Japan has. Why because they live longer than us. I still want to pay what Canada and Mexico pays for drugs why because they pay less money for drugs than we do.
We have already moved more than halfway on this issue towards them. But they think we should move halfway again towards them.

We can Never Compromise enough to win the GOP or Landrieu over.
Landrieu’s ambivalence? That’s too kind and generous a description for someone working almost as hard as Blanche Lincoln (D-Walmart) to defeat it.
For a senator coming from a state with perhaps the most crying need for health care reform in America, Landrieu is, in effect, abandoning her constituents, which amounts to an invitation to them to abandon her at the polls.
Won’t happen. The people left in the New Orleans area are all for Ms. Landrieu. Just enough dems (read Blacks) have not come back home after Katrina to tip the vote in favor of idiots like her. 148,000 New Orleanians are still not back.
Damn right. Consequences
Hot damn. I’m so proud of Palm Beach County’s Democrats.
