Dede Scozzafava’s announcement that she would suspend her campaign is a huge victory for Doug Hoffman, third parties, and the conservative grassroots. Whether it will be a true victory for the Republican Party is less certain. Like rats fleeing a sinking ship, the Republican Party has moved quickly to jump on the Hoffman bandwagon. They want to share his victory as their own. While it is true that he will probably caucus with the Republicans in the House, this is likely to be a pyrrhic victory for the national party.
Say what you will about Scozzafava’s lack of conservative credentials, she has been an elected Republican for years and was the official nominee of the party. If Doug Hoffman had not jumped into the race, Scozzafava probably would have won. Hoffman did not enter a primary to become the Republican candidate; he ran to defeat the Republican. He has spent weeks trying to tear down the Republican.
Hoffman has benefited from a perfect storm. The Democratic candidate Bill Owen proved to be surprisingly weak and Scozzafava suffered a series of setbacks. Scozzafava’s last minute decision to drop out should help the right rally behind a single candidate and not split the vote. Hoffman did run a great campaign, but he also got very lucky. The more likely outcome was that Hoffman’s Conservative Party candidacy would have cost the Republicans the seat.
Hoffman may win this time, but what about the dozen potential conservative third party candidates who will be inspired to become the next Doug Hoffman? He’s shown them that they can run and win. The number of Republicans who rallied to Hoffman even before Scozzafava dropped out is a bad precedent. It sends the message that candidates having nothing to fear from trying to tear down Republican nominees. If they can hurt the Republican candidates enough, the national party will embrace the cause of their own downfall with open arms.
The NY-23rd special election may be nothing more than that: a very special election. Hoffman could become part of the Republican fold, and his example could be soon forgotten. On the other hand, he may prove to be a harbinger of things to come. He could be the inspiration the very conservative grassroots need to openly challenge the Republican Party. Dozens of Republicans could end up facing extremely conservative primary challengers; or much more importantly, conservative candidates running against them in the general election. Many seats could be lost to a split right caused by a small but very active conservative grassroots movement. The Republicans may celebrate Hoffman’s possible win; but in the long run, they may regret their lack of dedication to party loyalty and integrity. They should hope the message sent by a Hoffman win is not: run, teabaggers run.

About FDL Action
Considering how unresponsive the Democrats in Washington have been to the progressives, I wouldn’t be surprised if a nascent Progressive Party, a national movement, should spring up in opposition. I’ve been a Democrat all my life and have voted a straight ticket for 36 years, but the way things are going, I’d switch from the Dems in a second.
An alternative scenario for Election Day: Scozzafava’s moderate GOP supporters, embittered by Hoffman’s attacks on their candidate and the national elites (“Fuck Sarah Palin! Who does she think she is?” was one comment I saw from a GOP in the district) who decided to take down their moderate female candidate, either stay home or vote for the candidate more in tune with Dede’s values, Democrat Bill Owens.
Dede has a base; she’s been an elected official from the area for years, and wasn’t chosen as a sacrifice by the GOP county chairs. They expected her to win. This disaster, not of their making but the creation of out-of-district teabaggers and out-of-state egos, will bruise the party for years. The attention is unwanted and they are unused to it; had you ever even heard of John McHugh before Obama chose him to be Army Secretary??
Yeah, me neither.
The only narrative I want to be sure never grabs ahold, regardless of the outcome Tuesday, is this one: SMARTIE PANTS RAHM. There’s no way he could foresee, and act on, the odd circumstances that produced the national party crack-up. McHugh was just a bi-partisan-y choice for a position he knows there are few Democrats to fill: Army men. Just like keeping Gates as SecDef, it undermined our party’s national security credentials and made it look like the GOP really is the strong-daddy party.
But Rahm didn’t make this happen. Out-of-control national GOP egos made this happen, and some out-of-district teabaggers. Please don’t let whatever happens on Tuesday obscure the real message: this district’s been represented by a GOP since 1871.
Progressives should learn a lesson from this. We need to primary a lot of the Versailles Democrats, and if that doesn’t work maybe we should try the third party route.
The Democrats are’t going to get better on their own. They need a push.
Dede might be a repuke, but she has the makings of a good dem, i.e, let the crazy assholes run you over, then lay down and die.
Scozzafava has endored Owens. The local Watertown paper has endorsed Owens also.
Be careful what you wish for. I can think of nothing more dangerous than a major party being taken over by people who are essentially fascist. I think in the end we are going to be grateful that Obama is moderately conservative; it protects the right flank of our democracy.
Like the Blue America Ds fold right into the corporate Ds after election?
I’m going for the ‘Highball Party’: drive the f*cking train over them: if they insist on stepping out in front of the train, then they deserve what happens to them.
one view i haven’t seen here is what if this conservative idea works and the conservative view takes over. can you imagine a tea party president and congress. shades of 1984.
I think this is the best thing to happen! Especially after reading this, and Frank Rich’s column today. It’s a good time to try a little re-branding!
LMAO
–Oh Teddy! Me thinks thou dost protest too much!
–This is just the beginning. What is happening in NY-23 is the start of a tidal wave of socio-political reforms, soon to be coming to a district near you. It’s more than a referendum on the death of moderate Republican sophistry. This is a referundum on liberal hucksterism, symbolized by the Obama’s over-reaching socialistic agenda. The gang of radicals that have pitched their tents in the White House are emblematic of where he wants to take the country. There is more than one problem with this neo-radicalism.
–Problem One: It isn’t going un-noticed by the silent-majority of moderate, independent, and conservative voters who have been scared into activism, most, including me, for the first time in their lives. The ‘Tea-Party Express’, is just a symbol of the real unrest going on with voters who have had enough of Washington’s excessive power grabs. The left, the MSM, and the Obama harangue us with deviant malapropisms, only fueling further indignation, while swelling our ranks.
–Another problem with this neo-radical movement is how it has coalesced true consevativism, and highlighted the Rinos, making it easier for conservatives to purge the weak and spineless. The new True conservatism has found a voice, and new leaders are emerging that will lead us into the new century, organized, energized, and exorcised.
–Get on the “express”, or get run over by it, for it is soon coming to a theatre near you.
Since you have no idea what it means, I got you a link:

If Hoffman wins, it will be interesting to see just how far the teabaggers are emboldened, and how much the few sane Republicans in office will end up pushing further to the right.
As to drdbunk, your trolling fails, 1/10.
Neo-radicalism? Barack Obama?
Did you have to work hard to be such an utter tool, or were you just born with the talent?
Radicalism would be things like single-payer health care, complete withdrawal of forces from Iraq and Afghanistan, a complete overhaul of financial regulations and abolition of the corporate personhood distinction.
Barack Obama stands for none of these things.
*sigh*
Yes, we need a third party for the true progressives.
Apologies for depressing you. I was just trying to make a point about how these folks seem to have no flipping clue what the words they’re using actually mean.
“Be careful what you wish for. I can think of nothing more dangerous than a major party being taken over by people who are essentially fascist.”
I’ve been thinking about this, too. Good God, what next? The Beer Hall Putsch?
My uncles were high officers in the army and one went to West Point. Though conservative, they were adamant about civilian control of the military. Especially that the President is the boss. Now my uncles are dead and gone. I read about military people challenging the legitimacy of O as Commander in Chief because he has’nt produced a birth certificate (they claim.) I wish my uncles were still around. I’d ask them what they were hearing about the loyalty of the military to the elected CinC. This question is very important as it relates to your quote I cited above.
I know.
I appreciate you encapsulating the fantasy platform of a Neo-Radical. I now know what to call myself!
I just finished reading this LINK about the poor in Alabama, who, like drdbunk, are brainwashed into voting against their own self interests again and again.
(The link is from foothillsmike comment #34 in the Talking Heads thread)
Legion(Of doom?)
–You can call it fascism if you want, but the maundering mendacity with which you portray my thoughts are indicative of the blunderbuss stylings of this author, the entire leftist movement, and this President that are further fueling the activist movement. Thanks for playing along.
Hannibal(Lechter?),
–Who can argue with such refulgent and pertinacious perspiscacity?
Spotts,
–See response to Legion, rinse…repeat.
Right…instead of actually arguing my points you dismiss them out-of-hand.
Typical of an intellectual lightweight – all sizzle, no steak.
–Do you mean points like this:
“Did you have to work hard to be such an utter tool, or were you just born with the talent?”
–I try not to argue with intellect that is above my “talent” to understand.
–If you mean your “points” about Iraq, etc, I’m not referring to that.
–I’m referring to the army of avowed communists, socialists, and Maoists which litter his array of czars, advisors and other political appointees.
Why do I picture you as Dan Ackroyd in Doctor Detroit? (Without of course, your actually having Ackroyd or Howard Hesseman’s intelligence)
Because you are in a drug-addled haze, and that is the movie you watched last?
Because you haven’t left your basement for years and don’t know what is going on in the real world? (Isn’t that movie like 20 years old?)
Because you are an idiot?
–I read your link to a story filled with conjecture, hyperbole, opinion, and no real substantiation of the author’s paroxysms.
–Kind of like your importunate comparison to my situation, even though you don’t know me from Adam.
Again, cite your sources. You say there’s an army of communists and socialists in the Obama White House (a proposition I find highly dubious), and yet the Administration is still proceeding on a corporate path.
You made the claim, therefore the burden is on you to PROVE your claim is true.
But, why would you? You’ve yet to produce any evidence other than that nebulous “experience” argument that you like to use whenever anyone challenges your baseless assertions.
And don’t feed me the baloney about the “media” being in Obama’s pocket. That is, to put it bluntly, old meme.
You obviously did not click the link and read the factual story of current events in Samson, Alabama.
Is Glenn Beck pushing this overuse of a Thesaurus?
OK,I’ll play your silly name game, since you can’t think for yourself.
—LIST OF OBAMA’S FRIENDS, ADVISORS, CZARS WITH SOCIALIST BACKGROUNDS, VIEWS—
William Ayers (Weatherman Underground bomber, unrepentant domestic terrorist)
Frank Davis (Member Communist Party USA, Early mentor to Obama)
Jeremiah Wright (Black Liberation militant, racist, and Pastor)
RailaOrdinga (Fundamental Islamic Candidate, Kenya, Obama’s Cousin)
Tony Rezko (Corrupt Financier, ties to Terror Financing)
Sam Graham-Felsen, (Obama campaign’s official blogger) He spent time in France taking part in labor riots, has written for a socialist magazine, hung a communist flag in his home, and was a fan of Marx while at Harvard.
Shepard Fairey, Official artist of the Obama posters…remarkable resemblance to Marxist posters

Yeah, Rezko was such a strong Obama supporter that he went to Karl Rove to try to get Pat Fitzgerald removed as the USA investigating his corruption. You know, one of the Bush USA’s that Obama has actually asked to stay on rather than not getting around to appointing a replacement yet (which is how most of the Bush USA’s that are still hanging around have been treated)
I can think just fine. YOU’RE the one who seems to have a thinking problem.
You claim there are an “army” of communists and socialists in the White House. But NOT ONE of the people you listed actually works in the White House.
And some of them were “false positive” names on the White House visitor logs:
“Many of the names appear, on first glance, to be boldface ones — such as Michael Jordan, William Ayers, Michael Moore, Jeremiah Wright, Robert Kelly (‘R. Kelly’) and Malik Shabazz — but the White House warned on its blog that these names in particular were ‘false positives.’
‘The well-known individuals with those names never actually came to the White House,’ wrote Norm Eisen, special counsel to the president for ethics and government reform.”
And by the way? That’s an “army” of seven you’ve listed there, none of whom are working in the WH.
But since it upsets you so much that folks might quote Chairman Mao, here’s a few others who have quoted that noted Marxist Commie.
Sorry, got interrupted and mis-hit submit, to continue…
–Van Jones(until he was exposed and forced out)
–Cass Sunstein(regulatory czar, In his 2004 book, Animal Rights, suggested that animals ought to be able to bring suit, with private citizens acting as their representatives, to ensure that animals are not treated in a way that violates current law.
–John Holdren( proposed ‘compulsory sterilization’ and forced abortions to control population)
–Mark LLoyd(cheief adversity czar-FCC, avowed Marxist)
–Carol Browner(global warming ‘czar’ — was part of Socialist International, a group for ‘global governance’)
–Ezekiel Emmanuel(health care adviser — proponent of the Complete Lives System, which puts relative values on people’s lives based mostly by age)
–Ron Bloom(manufacturing, ex-Union Chief, noted thug and supporter)
–Robert McChesney(advisor, Free Press-soc org that vows to dismantle capitalism brick by brick)
—————————
Could play this silly name game for hours, but losing interest.
Take my word for it. From Michelle(first crony), to Valerie Jarrett to David Axelrod, all radical/socialist all the time.
Wow, drd, tell us what you had for breakfast so the rest of us can steer clear of that. What the h*ll are you talking about?
And yet this is one of the most corporate-friendly Democratic Administrations in the last 50 years.
That means either they have no influence or you’re talking through your hat. Guess which one is more likely.
Thanks for the link, dakine. And let’s also not forget: 1)Pat Buchanan (sp?) has said repeatedly how much he admired Hitler; 2) That the founder of the C Street “family” said that people such as Hitler and bin Laden are wonderful leaders. Where’s the outrage from conservatives about these comments? Gee, I wonder.
What part of friends, advisors, czars is confusing?
Obama’s announcement to run for President was made from Ayer’s living room.
Day-uhm! I lived and worked in Springfield, IL for a couple of years and never knew that the steps of the Old Capital was Wm Ayres living room.
Wow.
–The only thing I smoke is fine cigars(prefer Macanudo-Especiale) after evening meal…usually with 2-fingers of Pinch, Chivas Royal Salute, or on special occasions, Aberlour A’Abunadh Batch #13, quite simply the grandest spirit I’ve experienced.
–Revealing as to your source of delusionary persona though…
Now you’re just blatantly making it up as you go along.
Good point. You may find a thread between those financial institutions who got bailed out, and the cash-bundlers who have been partying up at the WH lately.
–Typical…you ask for a list, I give you a list, and you say “nanny-nanny boo-boo”.
–If you don’t believe me, look it up yourself.
Obviously you are not omniscient, as I did read your link, entirely, and described precisely what I found.
Tell me where I am wrong.
Look up a myth that has been around for nearly 18 months and has no credibility?
I’m bored.
You “enlightened” [Edited by Moderator] are not worthy of intellectual discourse, but thanks for playing along.
