According to the Huffington Post,
NBC News correspondent Chuck Todd reported Tuesday morning that the Obama White House, despite public expressions of support for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s decision to pursue an opt-out public insurance option, remains skeptical that Reid can come up with the votes.
The administration basically told Reid, “You’re the vote counter. But don’t come crying to us when you need that last vote,” Todd said on MSNBC.
Would Obama, only one vote shy of a huge victory, refuse to even attempt to twist the arm of that last Democratic hold out? This is a level of disdain, exhibited by the Obama administration for the public option, that boarders on insanity. The White House is telling the media that he will refuse to lift a finger to help pass his signature domestic policy goal simply because it contains a public option (which Obama continues to claim he supports). Is Obama so obsessed with killing the public option and winning the support of one Republican that he is willing to cripple his own Senate Majority Leader?
Instead of accepting that Reid has made his decision and backing him 100%, the Obama administration seems ready to undercut Reid at every turn. Reid will have a hard time whipping the votes he needs if Obama’s advisors are telling everyone in Washington that they are secretly expecting (or promoting) Reid’s failure. If Obama’s advisors have convinced him that angering his base, throwing labor unions under the bus, and making his Senate Majority Leader look so weak it could cost him his re-election is the best way to get a “victory” and pass something labeled “health care reform,” he has truly disappeared deep into the bubble.
Update – Greg Sargent is reporting that Chuck Todd is trying to clarify his statement which he claims got twisted. He claims the White House did not literally send that message, it is only “as if’ they were sending that message.”

If it’s true, I disappear further into despair.
Only hope – this comees from wanker Chuck Todd…..
Jon, This is all based on the 60-vote frame. If Reid falls short of 60 because of Obama’s lack of support, he can invoke reconciliation or the nuclear option and be done with it. It’s a waste of time to blame Obama at this point. It’s up to Reid, he can get a bill with a much better PO than he has now through the Senate if he wants to.
It will be time to blame Obama if a bill with a much better PO gets through conference and he vetos it. But, if we are successful in getting a better bill through Congress, I seriously doubt that Obama would ever do that, whatever deal he’s made with the companies.
On the other hand it might motivate members of Congress to tell the WH to take a flying leap. We desperately need an independent Congress for our system of checks and balances to function properly. If the WH overplays their hand on this, we might just get one.
So Barack Obama, who has made health reform the centerpiece of his administration, would allow it to go down to defeat in the Senate just to teach Harry Reid a lesson for going off the reservation? Sorry, I just don’t buy it. Todd lost control of his mouth for a few seconds, that’s all. I see no substance here whatsoever. I love Jane, but I think she’s got the wrong end of the stick here. She should have stayed with “Is Obama so obsessed with killing the public option and winning the support of one Republican that he is willing to cripple his own Senate Majority Leader?” and just answered “No” and concluded with that.
some late night anonymous sniping by a WH aide -
Todd has already said that this line is being misinterpreted and was NOT an actual WH quote:
http://theplumline.whorunsgov.com/health-care/chuck-todd-white-house-didnt-really-tell-reid-not-to-come-crying-to-us/
True, but he still claims that that is the message he got. From your plumline link:
Of course Todd could resolve the issue by giving us the exact quote and the name of his source, but he won’t because that’s how the Village works. Anonymous quotes to set up a Jane said, Swopa said strawman.
I haven’t read anything yet that suggests the WH is working to get a real public option passed, so Todd’s claim that his quote is being “twisted” rings hollow to me.
agree. shorter WH: ‘Reid’s move is fuc*** stupid’
that e mail over at Greg’s place sounds like he was ‘advised’ to walk it back or lose access
Not discussed is the fact that Chuck Todd is a
fucking idiot9 on the Lieberman Weasel Scale.Chuck Wad is bought and paid for, like Chip, Ed & Major. They’re in the business of skewering everything to give favor to the Repugs.
Not that I trust BO or any politician explicitly, but I trust that Obama is in favor of the PO.
On what basis? This is a sincere question. What have you seen PBO do to deliver on a p.o.? I haven’t seen anything. He gives nice speeches. He does that on civil liberties/rule of law topics, too, then turns around and keeps arguing in favor of BushCo’s tactics in court and in classified briefings to SJC and HJC. PBO says nice things about the p.o., but what has he actually done?
I have a whole list of answers, but at this time, the conversation that will generate would distract from what we really need to be doing, which is, calling Congresscritters to demand that a strong PO gets to Obama’s Desk.
I’m not convinced these sentiments are Obama’s. This smacks of Rahm wanting a trigger. I’ve always believed he did so he could extract campaign money from the insurance industry.
I do think that our suspicions and confusion of BO’s intentions are his achilles heel for toolish reporters to exploit and make POTUS look bad. All the more reason for BO to get on board in a loud and clear way.
I really think Chuck Todd was a good reporter a few years ago, but increased visibility and being on the defensive during a Democratic administration from the Jake Tappers of the world has ruined him. He’s incapable of reporting without inserting a know-it-all tone that always veers off the facts.
That’s why I voted for Obama (and Rahm too of course).
