Gerry McEntee is president of the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME). He leads one of the largest unions in America and has been one of the most vocal advocates for progressive health care reform. He is one of the few establishment figures willing to openly challenge Obama for repeatedly breaking his word in regards to health care reform.
Apparently, demanding that someone at least attempts to keep his promises is an unacceptable slight, according to a cowardly anonymous “senior White House 0fficial.”
We have had just about enough of his gratuitous slaps,” said a senior White House official Friday, calling the politically charged language “outrageous and unacceptable” from an ally — even from one that had, the official noted, devoted substantial resources to health care efforts.
“He’s doing his members a real disservice,” said the official, who said that while all other labor leaders had been careful to keep their opposition to elements of health care proposals modulated and largely inside the tent, McEntee was “beyond the pale.”
That’s interesting because the progressive community thinks Obama’s broken promises and secret deals are the real gratuitous slaps. Having a top progressive reform priority, allowing Medicare to save billions by directly negotiating drug prices, sacrificed in a backroom deal for campaign ads from PhRMA is beyond the pale.
Looking back at Obama’s campaign health care plan, it is shocking how many promises he broke without a fight. Obama promised:
- A new national health exchange open to all Americans
- A new public plan available to all Americans to compete with private insurance
- An employer mandate to provide health insurance
- A minimum medical loss ratio for insurance companies
- To allow people to import cheaper drugs from Canada or Europe
- To repeal the ban that prevents the government from directly negotiating with drug companies
Note none of these promise are part of the Senate Finance Committee bill. Obama has made no effort to fight for the inclusion of some of these (public option, employer mandate, minimum medical loss ratio) and months ago even made secret deals vowing to actively work to kill drug re-importation and direct drug price negotiation.
During the election Obama actively campaigned against two policies. One was the individual mandate favored by Hillary Clinton (and the health insurance industry) and the other was a tax on employer-provided health insurance which was also supported by John McCain. These two issues are now part of the Baucus bill. Since taking office, Obama has spent dramatically more time and political capital fighting hard to include these two provisions that he opposed than he has spent trying to include top progressive/labor union priorities that he supported, like the public option.
And in a double whammy, during a series of secret back room deals (breaking his promise for complete and open transparency) he has promised different industries he will actively oppose the very ideas he once claimed to champion, drug re-importation, and direct drug price negotiation.
The question is who is gratuitously slapping whom? Is it the Obama administration, which with repeated broken promises stabbed labor unions in the back? Or is it McEntee for simply calling bullshit when he sees it?
*Correction – The story originally state that AFSCME was the largest and not one of the largest unions in the country.

You know AFSCME came out for Dean when the other major unions were unwilling to risk their cred on the Democratic Wing of the Democratic Party.
Yes, they did and the Dems had better not forget the Unions. They are the backbone of the party and we need them.
I guess we are all supposed to be just grateful as hell that Obama got elected president and that should be enough, right?
The Obama administration thinks someone that is working for our rights is an enemy? This sounds like the administration is our enemy?
Don’t be an idiot Mr. Presdident. A few people that work at insurance companies that are competent can come to work for the government. It will put a far greater percentage of people back to work if we all have health care, won’t it? Then it won’t matter what a few execs from criminal enterprises have to say to you, will it?
This is getting to the point where you appear to be lying to us about everything? I don’t think the people will stand that.
Insurance is a crime. Health insurance is a crime against humanity.
He’s doing a hell of a John McCain impersonation.
anything else is unacceptable ands beyond the pale.
Exac-al-ac-ly!
The beltway bubble must be extremely powerful, because “Trust us; we know best” seems to permeate the thinking of everyone that ends up there.
And how dare you bring up fundamental campaign promises that aren’t kept.
Thanks to Schumer the cat’s out the bag; if Reid puts the PO in the bill it’s all but done.
So stop wasting time kissing Snowe’s behind and get it done.
Haven’t seen you for awhile – good morning.
I agree – this Snowe thing is ridiculous. She’s strutting around like the queen bee, lots of tv.
Why aren’t Rich Trumka and other labor leaders being equally outspoken? That would provide McEntee with cover.
And for what it’s worth, I think the Obama White House wants to produce the most watered-down version of health care reform imaginable, which it will then trumpet as a glorious victory.
Obama and his staff have also taken advantage of every opportunity to accuse “folks on the left” of being unreasonable, childish, uncompromising, etc.. Apparently everyone left of center is expected to fall in line while he coddles his critics on the right.
politico stoops too low when it quotes anonymous folks bashing allies.
if they wont come out and say it with their names attached, the bashing isnt worth reporting.
and it doesnt create concern.
bravo mcentee
trumka too.
Not going to happen. Do you think he expects a hall pass too because he’s not Bush? Could seriously be underestimating. I can’t imagine what he’s thinking.
I remember when single payer was “taken off the table” thinking that’s it. We’re done. This task of building a healthcare system is just like delivering a baby. You either deliver the whole baby or . . .
Now lo these many months later we are all straining to achieve a . . . hacked up baby. We are still going to be saddled with the same dysfunctional, cockamamie, Rube Goldberg, cobbled-together “system” we have now – only more so. I say anything less than a super strong, robust PO is just a waste of time and effort. And one thing I’m willing to bet is that we will NOT get a strong, robust PO. Only hope now is that the system will eventually collapse from the weight of unsustainability. Main problem with waiting for collapse? It can take a lot longer than you think. It’s amazing how long things can limp along.
He is still getting a pass from a lot of people. Read this BagNews thread if you don’t believe me. His apparent disrespect for progressives is causing them to peel off one by one, though. It will end up hurting the entire party.
Gotta go prepare a couple months worth of Bob-food, see ya later.
All we got was McCain without Palin and the box of Depends.
Barack Obama perhaps does not understand or get this part but at some point between here in late 2009 and late 2012 he is going to have to make another run for the WH.
The above comment from some unnamed Obama WH courtier as well as all the other similar back channel comments this Obama WH is peddling are going to be on the record. As will the Obama WH FISA cave in,the torture toss, the Wall Street Free Money for Goldman handover and very likely this so called healthcare reform pay to play ploy this Obama WH seems to be running.
As Margaret Hamilton in her career standout role in 1939`s Wizard of Oz put it — “all in good time my pretty, all in good time“ — this Obama WH cannot ignore or avoid the election calendar or time clock.
Barack Obama ought to declare these unnamed WH comment makers as being off the reservation and the fact that he has not is the reveal here.
Is Barack Obama sending out these unnamed comment makers?
Or is he not aware of how this makes his WH look and sound weasel like?
This is the first time I’ve ever seen AFSCME described as “the largest union in America.” Granted, it is ONE of the largest in the country, but what about NEA, SEIU, Teamsters, etc.?
Trumka has been extremely outspoken. Other labor leaders (i.e. teamsters and SEIU leaders) not so much but Trumka has been very out there.
Yeah, yeah…Labor Unions and their leaders are “fucking stupid”. Whatever. Progressives are ruining the Democratic Party. We’ve already been told.
Now that you mention it, you’re right. OK, but others need to speak up as well.
This is another case of the Obama Administration attacking its base. Republican whackos, backstabbing Liebermans and Blue Dogs, these are the guys that Obama spends all of his time reaching out to. The base gets the back of their hand. I agree with ratfood. There is a steady erosion of support from Obama and I think the nature of that loss is important. Most of those who have dropped Obama are not coming back. So this is not going to be “Well, we lost them here, but we’ll pick them up again later.” Those who are gone are gone for good. When the problems in the economy no longer can be hidden or papered over, then Obama is going to lose whole chunks of the American electorate. But by then, it will be way too late.
I think the issue that Obama did not lose political battle, just refused to try to even fight them is what will rapidly erode support.
I am grateful that Obama was elected, esp. given the alternative option of McPalin. However, my very best advice at this point is that Obama get off the balance bar, the teeter-totter, and start doing what needs to be done rather than to try find a balance of some sort with the already unbalanced. Balance is not an option with the current republican party, and he might just as well admit it. Unify the dems, then kick some ass and get to work retrieving this country from the shithole that Bush dumped it into. Start with heavy-handed health care rescue (everything the insurance companies don’t want would be a good place to START), then move forward from there. Get out of Afghanistan and Iraq, NOW. Immigration reform, NOW. Energy development and Carbon emission reduction, NOW. If the repubs don’t like it, fart in their general direction.
LEAD, Mr. Obama, LEAD! Stop wasting time playing games with the mental retards that have come to define the r-party. Kick some butt, but start NOW and don’t look back. Else we’re soon right back in the republican shithole again.
Seconded. The fight itself is important, and O has fought on the wrong side. We will remember.
Politico — again!
If you can’t second source it, don’t believe it just because Politico said it. I can invent a story and hide behind a hypothetical “senior White House official” and nobody will ever know that it was total invention.
Right on. Even the GOPers understand the passion and the energy resides in the ideological base. Obama is dissing his strongest and most able workers. The squishy middle waits until the last minute to decide, even to check out the news. There ain’t going to be many to persuade them, man phone banks, have house parties etc. Even those of us who may stick with an Obama reelection will have been so trivialized by the such comments from the White House and as well just won’t have the hope that drives passion to contribute.
Obama MUST BE EMBARRASSED by Rahm’s display on cnn this morning! He showed himself to be an old style Chicago political king maker. I’m sure he’s oblivious to how much Jane et friends have changed the dynamics of our Healthcare debate. It’s time Progressives take not, the ONLY way to effect a Healthcare outcome worth anything is to drop it in Obama’s lap. Then, my guess is, he and Rahm will accept credit for making the only environment that would allow it to come to the top.
As predictable as the tides, another post playing up an insult to progressives from an "anonymous WH official." Yawn. My favorite part is that the opinion of the "anonymous official" is always assumed to be the secret opinion of the President himself. Also a nice touch by commenters to make the "he‘s just like McCain (or Bush)" argument.
Too bad you can‘t work in the "He hasn‘t signed the DADT repeal that isn‘t on his desk" complaint. Slackers…
Meanwhile, back on Earth:
Trumka interview on Maddow
y‘all have a nice Sunday.
Do you mean anon. sources to Politico might actually not be telling the truth? Or even pursuing an agenda to defeat reform and sabotage Obama’s efforts? Breaking! The sun will set this evening. Gah.
Kagro gets down to the nut
Yep. Politico is a snide and petty Beltway gossip column that helps the GOP every chance they get. Like most MSM outlets, they have a grossly inflated sense of their importance and relevance. Quoting “anonymous” sources is prima facie evidence that they are small minded gossipmongers. Believe them at your own risk.
Good point and worth keeping in mind. The bunch at Politico are snarks. However the idea wouldn’t take hold if Obama’s actions or lack of actions regarding many of the Liberals’ most important issues were convincing. They are not.. Personally my patience has given out. However with some firm actions on health care the environment and civil liberties I will joyfully revise my current conclusions.
The rank and file of AFSCME are the people directly involved with Americans without adequate healthcare. They see the people across the counter from them asking why nothing can be done.
I believe McEntee is expressing the sentiments of his membership when he insists that Mr Obama keep his promises. More power to him. And a pox on the houses of those fighting so hard against universal healthcare for Americans.
The unions made the democratic party and they could also destroy the party. My McEntee is expressing the sentiments that many of us express everyday on FDLc.om , and that is for this president to keep his promise. I have no problem not supporting president Obama for his re election 2012.
I do believe that every American has a right to complain about Mr. Obama and his not keeping his campaign promises! If Mr. Obama had no intention of keeping them HE SHOULD NOT HAVE MADE THEM!!!! It is time to hold him and ALL ELECTED OFFICIALS accountable for the promises they make!!!! The White House has no right to gripe about being yelled at for not keeping the promises made!!!
He will then be a one term President!!!
Speaking as an un-reonstructed liberal who had to hold his nose when voting for Obama, watching his subsequent performance has been beneath even my expectations:
1. Immediate re-appointment of the Wall Street crew (bailout II, surprise, surprise) – not even a token Klugman, Reich or Steglitz, much less a Brooksley Born.
2. Lagged retention of much of the Bush/Cheyney national security team (surprise, lose in Iraq, “surge” in Afghanistan)
3. Openness in government – here we were fed a few crumbs (the promise of Dawn Johnsen) but were fed a shit sandwich with the likes of Eric Holder and “look forward, not backward”.
4. “Agressive” support for LGTB community – Harry Truman’s order to desegregate the armed forces in 1948 puts the prevarication on Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell in the proper context.
5. Support for the unions on core issue of Card Check…
I could keep on with this list for a while but I am depressing myself. The point of this is simple: Obama’s calculation is that we have NOWHERE ELSE to go. My retort to that is that the repugs thought they could control their base. The results of that view keeps endlessly amusing me.
Rock on!
I saw this on someone’s facebook and was surprised there were only a handful of members. I don’t think anyone wants to admit being thrown under the bus. Once you’ve been given some hope, it’s really hard to let go of it.

It isn’t really hard to figure out what he’s thinking. It’s harder to take hits from both your right and your left. He knew the right would be a problem, but the left, between being members of his party and falling in line during the election, are the place to hope for a break. To add to that, there has been some reluctance to be too apologetic about being a lefty liberal in recent decades, so the left has added to the expectation that they will be the ones to give him some space and some uncritical cheer leading and that the strategy of calling them the left of the left will bring them in line if they don’t cheer uncritically enough. I think, and sincerely hope, he is misreading the current atmosphere, but I can’t blame him for reading things that way from a historical context.
I remember asking my right wing dad what on earth McCain was trying to accomplish by picking Palin. He told me he was placating the social conservatives. I asked why he would do that in a way that alienates others since it’s not like the social conservatives would go Obama if he didn’t pick Palin. My dad said they might well stay home. I thought that was kind of an odd strategy, but looking back, it got them the Palin pick and a lot of other kowtowing while being reliable just gets the left used and abused. Obama’s hero Ted Kennedy ran in a primary against an incumbent Democrat so I’m sure he won’t be offended if we find someone to primary him if need be.
So, are you willing to say progressives should defeat the Bill? There are enough in the House to do that. My view is that unless a PO much stronger than that in HR 3200 emerges from this progress, progressives ought to vote no and then re-introduce HR 676 next year.
Me too. If Obama doesn’t turn around he’s toast as far as I’m concerned.
Don’t forget the grossly inadequate “stimulus” package.
I like Trumka. He’s the kind of throwback to the heyday of the union movement we really need.
I doubt there’s a live baby left in the bathwater, so I say dump the whole stinking mess down the drain and start over with HR 676. Obama’s awful mess wouldn’t go into effect until 2013, so starting over with HR 676 isn’t going to delay anything and, if it passes, it can go into effect by the summer of 2011.
Here are the cowardly unions which refuse to stand up to the White House on health care reform:
SEIU (that means you, Andy Stern)
Teamsters (that means you, Jim Hoffa)
IBEW (that means you, Ed Hill)
If you belong to one of the above unions, time to get yourself new leadership.
