At the time, I was operating under the misguided notion that if Democrats won elections, they would be in power. I thought that once in power, Democrats would try to fulfill their campaign promises. I confess I was pretty foolish in my youth.
I now see that it does not matter how many Democrats are elected. The Democratic leadership values “bipartisanship” above principles, the needs of working class Americans, or keeping their promises. The Democratic party in Washington insists on handing over complete control to whichever Republican senator will take it.
If, back in 2006, I had know that electing a Democratic president, 60 senators, and controlling huge margins in the House meant that I would live under the absolute reign of Empress Olympia Snowe, I would never have rooted for your defeat.
If I had know Democrats for some reason would instantly forfeit all their power to the least insanely conservative Republican senator, I would have worked hard to help you keep your seat. I would much prefer to be living under the mercy of a King Chafee instead of Empress Snowe.
Please accept my heartfelt apology, former Sen. Chafee. I foolishly thought electing Democrats would mean Democrats would be in power.

Lincoln Chaffee was a VERY GOOD Senator who deserved better from his constituents he served so well. But, don’t sweat it. IF the Democratic Party blows this singular opportunity it SHOULD cease to exist. What will the Party stand for? I can see its banner argument cleaely: “Vote for Democrats, we may be every bit as subservient to corporate interests as the Repubs, but we will at least pretend to care about serving you.”
Don’t say we Greens did not tell you Democrats so.
Really came to appreciate former Senator Chaffee during the John Bolton nomination hearings. He was pissed and deeply concerned by the Bush administrations continued refusal to hand over the NSA intercepts that Kerry, Kennedy, Biden were demanding.
Chaffee and Voinovich were visibly concerned by Bolton’a actions and arrogant and defiant attitude
Frankly, I wouldn’t be likely to believe Greens, either. I’m pretty sure it’s connected to the power, not the party label.
Jon, you naif!
Sadly, it does seem as if the Senatorial “new math” and the drive for “bipartisanship” means more than the lives and health of Americans. From health care reform to Afghanistan, the popular sentiments of the majority seem to mean very little on Capitol Hill. But don’t despair, soon the Dems will be in the minority again and can go back to claiming that they can’t do anything because they don’t have the 51/60/65/75 votes.
Just a little thought experiment.
It’s 2017, and President Mitt Romney has majorities of 239 in the House and 60 in the Senate.
Is he going to crawl on his knees to Kay Hagen, offering her the world for a little bipartisanship?
I wouldn’t disagree with you Kagro, but the Dems do have a singular flair for shooting themselves in the foot. This is just embarrassing to watch.
Thanks for this post Jon, I needed a laugh this afternoon : ) All hail Republicans! ; )
Since I gave up being a Republican (Nixon era) I’ve registered as an Independent but voted mostly for Democrats. Foolishly, I thought Obama had something to bring to the party. I am so disappointed on so many levels. Is there any way to gather some of the good guys&gals to rout the entrenched parties?
Dearie, If there were a way to “rout the entrenched parties” I’m SURE they’d be acting differently NOW!
No.
Nice job, Jon
You read my mind!
