Olympia Snowe and Rahm Emanuel are both pushing hard for their “trigger” idea recently. The idea is the public option would only go into effect if the health insurance industry kept raising people’s rates at a rapid pace. (I believe, after studying the trigger created by Snowe, that it was designed to never be pulled. I also agree with Robert Reich that the whole concept of “triggers” just doesn’t work in a town filled with highly paid lobbyists, but let’s leave that issue aside for now.)
The whole concept of a “trigger” is at least perpetrated on the idea that the for-profit health insurance companies can stop themselves from raising Americans’ premiums. It rests on the belief that the insurance industry will promise to stop ripping people off, and they deserve another chance to prove that they can.
The recent “study” released by AHIP makes even the concept of a trigger patently absurd. In their study, AHIP not only promised to keep increasing people’s premiums, but promised to do it at an even faster pace. They asserted that they were powerless to do anything to stop the increase. AHIP is telling Congress that they will not stop, they can not stop.
AHIP’s own study makes a trigger predicated on insurance industry moderation look insane. There is no mystery now about what will happen in the future. The health insurance industry itself admitted that they will fail to bring down premiums if the Baucus bill is enacted.
At best, all a trigger will do is force Americans to endure several more years of skyrocketing insurance premiums. At worst (and most likely), it will give the lobbyists for the for-profit insurance companies several years to work on crippling or removing the trigger, so that there will never be a public option.
Supporting a “trigger” on the hope that insurance companies would promise to shape up sounds like naiveté. Supporting a “trigger” after the insurance companies promised to increase premiums even faster sounds like deceit.

45,000 Americans die each year. Triggers Kill!
How many more, Obama Rahm, how many more?
When did intentional murder become legal?
Let’s just set the “starting point” at, oh four years ago.
Surely between then & now the insurance companies have done whatever it would take to spring the “triggers.”
The current proposals are just attempts to justify the robbery that’s already taken place, set it as the baseline, and allow more.
Someone ought to point out what the escalation in premiums has been over the last 4, 5, 10 years, and then ask if we want more.
Are Rahm & Queen Olympia really willing to stand up & say, “the insurance companies have been good citizens up until now, and we don’t want to take any action against them until they do something REALLY bad.”
As Seth Meyers says, “really? REALLY??”
Here’s The letter I sent to Senators Mukulski and Cardin today.
I have been following the health care debate with great intrest. As a strong supporter of a public option I’m pleased to see you seem to be a supporter of this as well.
Today this hit home hard for me.I opened a letter from CareFirst Blue Cross to find my premium is going up for the second time in 2 years. As a self employed Home improvement contractor,I cannot afford it.This was a policy that gave me practlly nothing,$1200.00 deductable,no wellness care at all,did nothing but put money in their pocket.Never had a claim.Today I go from underinsured to no insurance.I’m 44,self employed, father of 1,and I’m afraid. Please continue to support a public option. Thank you for your time.
Blue dog Frank Kratovil got the same letter with this change of wording; “I’m sorry to see your lukewarm support for the public option.”
I vote for “insanity” and “trickery.”
Paradox, good on you for your letter. I’m so sorry for your situation.
I wish EVERYONE who got such a letter would write to their senators & rep.
There’s hope for Cardin, but in my experience, Mukulski is a toad. But she needs to hear from her constituents. Thanks for your efforts.
BTW, even though you’re not a “constituent,” have you tried telling your story to Marylanders Chris VanHollen [currently head of the DCCC] and Donna Edwards? Might get a bit more resonance there. Good luck.
Haha,I gave $ to Donna Edwards campaign,partially because I like her,Partally ’cause I couln’t stand Al Wynn.I’ll try both,thanks!
More and more President Obama reveals himself to be the worst of politician who is looking not for the good of his people but is more interested in his prospects and level of political ease.
If and should President Obama fail his people and lets the greedy SOBs take us farther into this wretchedness of healthcare premised on profits, employment, social and economic status and amount of wealth held he deserves all scorn and contempt that can be heaped on him.
Barack Obama is telling a lie here as he could have declared some months back that a viable, robust Public Option Health Insurance was central to this reform. He has not and chums around with the likes of Baucus and now voices his praise of Snowe.
Barack Obama is a liar when he suggests a public option is what he stands for. He is not standing for a viable Public Option and letting this trigger idea come into being is a pure betrayal of any actual reform.
Barack Obamas pathetic politics are truly worthy of being despised.
“…the idea that the for-profit health insurance companies can stop themselves from raising Americans’ premiums.”
What a joke.
Congress will end up inventing some insane formula that will prevent a trigger from ever happening.
There will be a trigger lock on the trigger.
OT- Christy Vilsack is thinking of challenging Grassley next year!
Hey I got an idea why don’t we have a PO with a single payer trigger.
A “Trigger Public Option” seems rather akin to Harvey the Rabbit.
Um, can I vote for all three? Americans will not be killed by terrorists with nukes and other nefarious weapons.
They’ll be killed by actuaries, accountants and Microsoft Excel. And our Preznit.
Once upon a day, I used to come up with all sorts of names for our late, unlamented Preznit Bunnypants.
I think that Hizzoner BHO is now going to become Preznit Death by Excel.
I for one will be happy to see old Grumpypants go
But not be replaced by a senator from Monsanto
Snowe has no GOP pull Rahm only has pull with Dems if this passes Harry Reid and Obama own it.
Well, she’s a dem, and it would be hard to beat Grassley in the obnoxious department.
Another OT from Raw Story:
We have enough industry reps in congress.
I have been actively encouraging my Congresscritter Bruce Braley to run.
Vilsack is not a dirty word in Iowa, however. Grassley need to go.
I’ll take my chances with Monsanto*g* This is Iowa after all( the home of BIG AGRA)
Then what is the point of the Baucus bill except to screw us?
ground zero, to be sure
Negotiating a trigger is tantamount to deciding how many uninsured people is an acceptable number. It’s saying “things as they are now are OK, but if it gets X% worse, then we’ll act.”
It’s a bitter pill that, after running an inspired and inspiring national campaign, Obama cannot bring himself to make the compelling moral argument for the public option.
Donna Edwards’ child & mine were in the same class at a small local high school. She’s a good person; I hope she can hold out against Rahm & his minions.
I reiterate my thoughts about VanHollen. As head of the DCCC, he ought to be hearing stories like yours. I fear he is too beholden to the “establishment” of the party [read Rahm + Obama], but assuming your letter can get through to him, it should make a point.
Dems ought to realize how many people like you are out there, have always been “good Democrats,” have relied on the Dems to do the right thing by them, and are disappointed by the Dems waffling and caving to the special interests.
We “ordinary people” have long memories, and if the Dems are going to back this crazy “mandate thievery,” folks are going to be reminded every time they open their paycheck and see the increasing deduction for “health insurance” [sic]. Or when they get the notice from the IRS telling them they have to pay a penalty for not signing up for health care piracy.
You can only do what you can do, but kudos to you for whatever you’re doing.
