Why not just substitute Bernie Sanders’ S 703 Medicare for All, for both the HELP and the Finance bills. Then let the health insurance industry see if they can get the 60 votes (for a change) necessary to amend that. Bet Empress Snowe and President Collins wouldn’t be nearly so important in that scenario.

Just a guess: I don’t think the polls show that yet, and the Administration doesn’t seem very adept at anticipation beyond the polls, e.g. 1) passing a stimulus bill that leaves them with double-digit unemployment, so that they now must go back to the well for a jobs bill, and 2) bailing out the banks and hoping that they would be grateful enough to extend the credit that Main Street needs to get the economy going again, rather than taking the banks into receivership and making the necessary loans from the government-controlled banks.

You’re right. He’s in big trouble now because of his advocacy for the special interests. If he folds on health insurance reform, nothing will save him. If Reid fails to include a PO in the final bill, then Dodd better lead a successful floor fight for adding that to the bill, and since such a fight would require 60 votes to cut off debate, Dodd will first have to lead a floor fight to get rid of the filibuster. Only stuff like this will save his butt.

If there is no public option in the final bill, blame Barack Obama. This will be 100% the fault of the WH, not Harry, or anyone else in Congress.

I think Reid will some of the blame alright, but you’re right that plenty of it will justly go to the Democrats generally and to the President whose perfidy and dishonesty in this reform effort is something I won’t forget about.

By providing a vacuum of political and moral leadership, by not bringing America along with him to implement a vision of change, Obama allowed the Chinese fire drill to quite likely burn down the house.
