Our opponents have not been successful in stopping good health care reform legislation

nope, it is the supposed allies who have been successful in stopping good health care reform legislation, and substituting a big kabuki charade of health insurance reform legislation.

please explain how the “he cause for which we fighting … the moral truth” etc is embodied in the actual legislation that congressional Democrats are working on?

I absolutely agree. These ads are all about keeping the polling numbers strong, so the weak-kneed Senators have some cover. The campaign finance laws say you have to couch the ad in certain terms as “issue advocacy” - but HCAN couldn’t care less if they have an effect on Ensign.

I think the commenters are extremely narrowly focused. What state is Ensign from? Who is the OTHER Senator from that state? And how dependent on that other Senator is the entire Public Option effort? To me, it is Obvious that the real target of those ads is Harry Grow-a-Pair Reid. To the extent those ads keep support for the PO strong among his voters (as measured by the endless private polling he does), they will steel his wishy-washy resolve to follow up on the commitments he made privately to home-state voters to include a PO in the final Senate bill. Remember, we still don’t have a Public commitment from Reid, one way or the other. I think HCAN was extremely sagacious and subtle in this ad campaign.

Moreover, they are one organization that is actually putting boots on the ground, in my area at least.

From an e-mail I got today:

“Dear Friends,

Tomorrow Tuesday, October 6, at 11:30 am at 1601 Chestnut Street in Philadelphia to we are going back to CIGNA’s world head quarters in Philadelphia to protest business practices that deny people insurance coverage and health care and their political efforts to block health care reform. A few of us are going to risk arrest by blocking the doors to CIGNA’s lobby. We need as many of you as possible to join us and show support for this action. Please RSVP here. We are not eager to engage in civil disobedience. We have been organizing for months, built a huge campaign and have had a clear impact on our Senators and Representatives. But what we have seen in the last few months from the opponents of health care reform, who are partly financed by health insurance companies, is a campaign of deceit, lies and distortions. Our opponents have not been successful in stopping good health care reform legislation. But the charges and counter-charges have lead all of us to lose sight of the fundamental moral issue that should be at the heart of this debate.

The cause for which we fighting is a moral truth that is so hard and clear that it shines like a beautiful diamond struggling to be seen in a piece of black coal: everyone in America deserves good health care they can afford.

So please come out to support those of us willing to risk arrest to stand up for this principle tomorrow.

And, to learn more about health care, come hear T.R. Reid, author of a wonderful book about health care in America and around the world, The Healing of America, at the Ethical Culture Society, Rittenhouse Square South near 19th street, tonight from 5:00-8:00 pm

Thanks for all you do.

Marc”

So let’s stop the internecine sniping, and support each other’s varying methods to achieve the same goal.

thanks for that link, selise. that one was bang on.

after Obama has demonstrated the huge gap between rhetoric and action, fellow traveler groups like MoveOn and HCAN should be on notice that walking the talk is what matters.

Good point. The Republicans are not the problem here (much as the Democrats would like you to believe otherwise). At least not the problem we most need to work on and the problem we have the best chance of succeeding with.

We have a supermajority in the Senate and a huge advantage in the House. It’s the Democrats who we need to be pressuring.

Also, why did HCAN and other progressive organizations not organize a rally in Washington, with coordinated/synchronized rallies around the country? We gave these people money to help us achieve our goals and they can’t even come up with a decent rally organization? Are these organizations hoping that they can keep people from pressuring the president for a real Medicare public option?

Thank you for so clearly spelling this out.

They NEED to be called out on this wasted effort.

Like the deal with Pharma/Ins/Big Med that Rahm/Obama made, it would seem the entire fight on behalf of WH and cronies like HCAN and Atl. Phil. is all about beating Repubs, NOT winning a healthcare reform plan that will cover the people, and compete with the monopolies of the insurance comanies and their cohorts.

What these asshats don’t realize while they are pandering to the HUGE amounts of lobby money available, is that the blowback from a failed fully formed public option is gonna sink the Dem’s in 2010 AND 2012. Sink them HARD.

It’s all insane, and the big corps win no matter WHO’S in the WH or Congress.

Way to call this for what it is Mz. Hamsher, just another bullet to the head to kill real reform of any sorts.

How about spending that $25 million on media ads, Jason, to INSIST and DEMAND what the majority of the nations voters want! Blast mandates, fight FOR full care NOW, without preexisting, without useless co-ops or useless state plans. No layered premiums based on ages, genders, or pre or existing conditions.

Government run under medicare and medicaid. With EVERYONE eligible to switch to it if they don’t like their present coverage.

THAT’S $25 million spent, I could get behind. As it is, HCAN is shilling for a failed reform effort at large. Huh, wonder why . . . .

I think at this point it’s safe to say that if given the alternative of no public option in the final bill, that HCAN would push for what’s left in it.

I think they think like Obama thinks which is “who gives a smeg about the little people.”

gilding the lilly and a waste of money (money that real allies like CPC could be using)

Kaiser Family Foundation released it’s latest last week and almost 60% of the folks polled named ‘politics’ as the sole reason for GOP obstruction - IOW, voters already know this

Perhaps I’m mistaken, but Atlantic Philanthropies donated the money to further health care reform, not bash Republicans.

If HCAN and Atlantic Philanthropies are now operating as organizations that seek to influence electoral politics, they should be organized as a PAC or a 527. While it may be technically legal to run this ad as a 501c4, it has nothing to do with furthering the health care debate and everything to do with beating up the GOP.

A fine goal, just not what anyone thought HCAN or Atlantic Philanthropies were set up to do.
