Update: We are trying to find out the names of the 14 who have defected since they’re not named in the Hill article. Will let everyone know as soon as we do.
On July 31, 60 Democrats in the House signed a letter saying they would vote against any health care bill that does not have a robust public option. They wrote in protest over Blue Dog efforts, led by Mike Ross, to hold the House bill "hostage" and gut it. Now, according to an interview with Raul Grijalva in The Hill, that number is down to 46:
Grijalva noted that 46 members recently signed a letter pledging to vote against the centrist plan. In the numbers game of the House, that is significant, because Republicans are expected to unite against the healthcare bill. So if 39 Democrats oppose the plan, it wouldn’t get the 218 votes needed to pass. There are 52 Blue Dogs, as well as many other centrist members not in the coalition.
Grijalva began this whip count on September 14, and evidently 14 Democrats have defected since signing the July 31 letter. Small wonder — despite tremendous popular support for their strong position, they are up against leadership and the White House who have threatened progressive organizations and called them "fucking stupid" for defending the public option from Blue Dog attack.
It’s time for progressive organizations, for labor unions and community groups and individuals to get their backs. Richard Trumka shouldn’t have to be the only one out there taking all the political risks and having AFL-CIO members threatened with huge tax burdens by Congress if he doesn’t drop his support for a public option.
Progressives organizations need to come together and say that they will be there for the members of Congress who are always there for us. Because if we don’t, we’ve been down this road too many times before. FISA. The war. Military commissions. It may be paved with the "good intentions" of progressives — but we know where it always goes.
Maxine Waters. Keith Ellison. Jerrold Nadler. Emanuel Cleaver. Lloyd Doggett. Bob Filner. Chellie Pingree. Lynn Woolsey. John Conyers. These are the names we see over and over again, fighting for health care and the environment and worker’s rights and civil liberties. For choice and marriage equality and financial regulation and free speech. They are standing up for what we believe in, resisting the influence of lobbyist money and Rahm Emanuel’s thuggery, and if we don’t support them when everything is on the line, there is no progressive movement in this country — we’re just going through the motions on the way to inevitable defeat.
They are our Health Care Heroes.
The passionate, vocal commitment of these progressive members to true health care reform has emboldened even those on the Senate Finance Committee. But it is public, not institutional support that has given them the ability to hold out as long as they have. Quietly, Rahm Emanuel is doing to these members what he’s doing to Richard Trumka — hammering them mercilessly until they accept the insurance industry bailout he negotiated long ago.
Please sign the DFA/FDL petition and let them know that you will stand with these progressives all the way through conference in their commitment to block the passage of any bill that does not include a strong public option. Tell us if you’re a member of a progressive group or institution, or even if you’re on their email list. Then contact that group and ask them if they, too, will publicly declare their support for these members of Congress who are our firewall in the health care battle.
Just like members of Congress need the support of progressive groups, those groups need the support of their members. Let them know that you will be there for them if they stand strong behind those who are fighting for us.

Who are the 14? Shouldn’t we be slamming their phone lines?
What it will come down to is people ending up at such places as Allenwood federal penitentiary, or one of the privately run gulags that all the rage in American, for failure to abide by mandatory insurance purchase requirements as a way to get access to health care, as well as experimental drug trials.
Signed and sent, in service of protecting the paltry from the venal.
Thanks much, Jane.
Good morning all.
Why have the 14 changed their minds were they bought off or scared off? Are they to scared to explain themselves to us humble voters?
following Jane’s suggestions is imperative in light of Clyburn’s latest. attempting to peel off some of those 46 and apparently with the Speaker’s tacit approval
sign and dial firedogs, sign and dial !
I’d like to know to find out if I need to ask for refunds from the last $$ ask.
That’s one I’ll happily sign. I think my political donations from now on will go to DFA and FDL PAC rather than any individual candidate.
Aha! Good catch!
am looking at the list of 60 – there are some obvious suspects
the IL delegation (JJj, Hare, Guiterrez), Capuano, Fattah, Massa, Speier, Hirono, even Honda blah, blah, blah, first string fools if they’ve yet to figure out how closely some of us are watching
Guiterrez? from Chicago Hispanic good community relations Mayor Daley creature.
We don’t know. Trying to figure it out — Grijalva says there are 46 in the Hill article but doesn’t name them.
just took the IL delegation off the top simply due to their demonstrated fealty to Rahm – I will gladly be wrong about any one named above
One of my top questions for the 14 would be … If you can’t hold firm on progressive health care then why are you a member of the progressive caucus? Why are you in congress at all?
Signed the petition and kicked in 100 dollars.
IL delegation its him but
nope Rahm and Guiterrez got their jobs as Reps thanks to Mayor Daley.
Signed.
Thanks Jane, cbl, pw….
no quibble, but each of them go all Riverdance everytime Rahm picks up the baton, hell, Schakowsky wants to take it out on tour
question for the inside baseball types -
do you go for Reps with low PVI ratings, eg, Yarmuth, DeFazio (D+2), or those with the cushy #’s – Watson (D+35) ???
Yes, precisely.
And, these 14 are playing by the old rules whereby progressives voiciferously advocate X then capitulate to save Democrats from some perceived embarassment for being too liberal.
Lissen up 14. It’s a new day. Vote for healthcare reform or we will show you the most direct route to the door of elected officialdom.
True but Guiterrez is vulnerable to Hispanic radio, tv, newspapers if we want to target him many of his districts voters do not have insurance. The Mayor needs Hispanic votes we have leverage.
Schakowsky lost against Rahm for a district I believe because Rahm had Daley’s support I don’t know if she got the job later with Daley’s help but Chicago has lots of Polish immigrants no healthcare and local Polish language newspapers etc we can advertise in I think her district is Polish.
just so we have the number in mind, how many do we need, absolute minimum, to have a shot at blocking an unacceptable (sans PO) bill coming out of reconcilation?
Go after? You mean primary, or just call to the carpet or even run an ad now?
As far as i am concerned on war, choice, civil liberties or health care.. when clear cut wrong… gloves off.
was talking in terms of Leadership’s strategy on whom to peel off
Thank you!
If we’re down to the core of Progressives, why not promote single-payer and the Weiner amendment. There’s nothing to lose.

It’s not just the Progressive Caucus, it all the DEMs that are going to pay royally if we don’t get health care with a strong and accessible public option. It’s not just the progressives that are mad as h**l about the health care debate and Obama’s wishy-washy vague approach, its everyone that is getting squeezed by premiums. Even the moderate DEMs, Independents and even some GOP voters want to see health care with a public option. We have all seen the Democrats do really dumb stuff to themselves over the years, but can they really be this unbelievably stupid this time to falter on the public option. They will be handing the majority and Obama’s Presidency to the GOP. If they think betraying us will be forgotten with the news cycle, they are beyond stupid.
Because there are not 39 members of Congress who will vote against any bill that does not have single payer.
People who could have been whipping for that spent their time trolling our comments instead. Guess that didn’t work out so well.
the post shows 39, but Jane and her team have said 40 all along, so I’ll stick with that. anecdotally, there are some reps we haven’t heard from until recently, i.e., Grayson,
It will be 40 when Garamandi is sworn in, which hasn’t happened yet. Since we didn’t want to be one short if the vote took place after that happened, we’ve always wanted to have 40.
Michael Whitney has a fresh post up on the front page: “Exclusive: New Poll Shows Clear Majorities Distrust Big Corporations, Favor Unions”
I wouldn’t feel so comfortable with 39 either.
If the final bill doesn’t have a public option, I suspect you’ll get at least a few Republicans in the House to vote for it.
Come to think of it, 46 might not be enough.
THANK YOU!
I signed the petition.
Jane, will we be able to know how many Progressives have signed the petition?
They sure are slow to figure out that things are changing. Harry Reid losing to unnamed R candidate? What does that tell the Democratic Party insiders!?
So if its 39 (or 39+our ex-state insurance commissioner), is merely holding the line at 46 going to give us enough of a buffer against clandestine deal-making or do we need to whip aggressively to get back as many of the 14 defectors as possible? I suppose to answer that question we have to somehow get more information on who the defectors are and why they defected…
The why is very important.
Gee, you think that the 6 pro-insurance/pharma lobbyists for every 1 congress person has anything to do with influencing those 14? It’s too bad the main stream media won’t cover that, but the UK will….
http://www.dailykos.com/storyo…..media-wont
I just got an e-mail from DFA listing the “good guys.”
I wonder if DFA is taking into consideration the “defectors?”
Would it be appropriate in letters to Harry Reid to point out that letting down the millions of Americans, especially young people, who were inspired by messages of “Change” and “Yes, we can!” and so came out to vote in 2008 would be a betrayal similar to Daschle’s decision in 2002 to go along with Bush’s war of choice in order to get the issue out of the way before the 2002 election?
I’m sure Reid will remember how that turned out for Daschle…
OT Olympics going to Rio. Copenhagen was a bust for Obama, apparently. Chicago was eliminated in the first round, shortly after somebody asked a question about whether the US security apparatus would freely allow foreigners to travel to our country without interference or politicization.
Really? Then what the hell is this?
That weak Dems in the Senate only vote for weak Dems for leadership positions. Isn’t this twice in a row? First Tom Daschle, now Harry Reid?
Since they’re all afraid to say their names, I don’t think that “14″ is as solid as Rahm would like them to be.
We’ll start calling on Monday to ask them whether they have signed the letter or not.
That sounds like a very sound theory – can’t wait to hear who are the dirty 14 or whether these defectors are just more shadowplay from RahmCo.
I have no idea what you are worried about. Democrats may think they are clever, but it is obvious what they are going to do.
1. pass both bills in House and Senate.
2. Add public option in conference
3. Use reconciliation in the Senate
So, there is no reason at all to be so worried about the public option.
You want to lay money on that?
If someone puts up an account at ActBlue to fund newspaper ads for papers, especially specialty papers like the Polish and Spanish ones, in districts with wobbly reps, I’ll donate. Radio might be a good option, too. Here in SoCal, Spanish-speaking radio is huge and ads there must be cheaper than tv ads. I’m in Issa’s district and despite all the McCain/Palin and Prop 8 signs all over at election time, I always wondered if we wouldn’t be Dem if the huge Latino population was motivated to vote more and vote as a block on something other than abortion. The rallies for immigration were huge here despite the resounding lack of support from the more visible “majority.”
Better to worry enough to act now, even if it is needless, than to find out after passage that we didn’t worry enough. I don’t trust any of them, though I certainly would love to be pleasantly surprised on that front.
In the meantime, this has been a once in a lifetime chance to wake up average Americans, including myself, to how truly owned we are through those who have bought our government. So whatever happens to the PO in the end, every phone call, letter, petition, email, and ad that points out that we are watching, that we care, and that we are going to shout out to the world and remember for as long as it takes to vote the bums out when “Representative” means representing someone or something other than their constituents is time, money, and effort extremely well spent.
Signed. FDL Action Pac rocks!
Define “public option” in your scenario, please.
Signed. Only wish I could give money.
Hope it works.
Folks one of the real heroes of the Progessive caucus has been Raul Grijalva, not relenting.
It would be nice to call & thank him & urge him to not give in.
Grijalva: ph(202) 225-2435
Hey, I listened online to Diane Rehm after you posted about it. Nice job!!
Thanks. You didn’t think I sounded whiny or rude? Whew.
I signed the petition. Why won’t Grijalva release the letter?
Hey it looks like this article was written too soon. Open Left is reporting that the only reason why the number went lower was because they stopped it early in order to do a more complete count of which Dems are for a public option based on Medicare + 5%. According to the new count it is AT LEAST 170!
http://www.openleft.com/diary/…..er-than-46
signed earlier today.
That is what Senator Harkin said recently
Public Option by Dec
http://current.com/items/91057…..-video.htm
But Jane your efforts are priceless and is making a huge difference. Keep pushing us. Thank you so much for all you and others are doing
It is very important to differentiate these “whip counts.” The one you cite from Open Left ask if they support the public option. The more important and telling question asks if they would NOT vote for any bill WITHOUT a robust public option.
