For a very long time the health insurance industry has been working hard to avoid state benefit mandates. Insurance companies hate that states make them cover conditions that actual Americans suffer from. Paying for medicine treatment when someone gets sicks does terrible things to their insurance profits margins.

Well AHIP asked and Baucus delivered.

After completing my preliminary reading of the Chairman’s Mark of the Baucus bill, it appears that Baucus has followed the deal outlined in the memo quite faithfully.

I think they left out one key moment of the Maryland event:

That’s the one where the crowd openly boos the Baucus bill.

We’ve already raised over $11,000 just this morning toward our goal of reaching 60% of Arkansas Democrats statewide and nearly 100% of Democrats in Mike Ross’s district.  That is a meaningful buy that will send a very strong message right in the back yards of Lincoln and Ross.

So, there we have it. All of these members are in strong Democratic districts whose seats could only be threatened by primary challenges from other Democrats.

The Washington Post says that the White House — and the health care industry stakeholders that the Post tried to entice into their Pay2Play salons — are happy with the response to the bill.

The Hill reports that President Obama was booed when he brought up the Baucus bill at his health insurance reform rally at the University of Maryland:

Any Democrat who thinks that voting for a health care bill with mandates, fines and no public option is a good idea might want to take a look at what happened at the AFL-CIO convention yesterday: “Delegates at the AFL-CIO’s convention in Pittsburgh chanted “bullshit” in response to the plan from the Senate Finance Committee’s chairman.”
