Because I guess independents are who we’re looking at to turn out for the 2010 midterms:
"I am concerned that if the direction of the news is all blogosphere, all opinions, with no serious fact-checking, no serious attempts to put stories in context, that what you will end up getting is people shouting at each other across the void but not a lot of mutual understanding."
Take that, Nico Pitney.
Note to self: be nicer to Glenn Beck.

About FDL Action
Seems like maybe he is misremembering how his campaign was able to raise boatloads of cash for him. Seems like I remember many bloggers who came out in support of him early on. Would think that Mr. Obama might want to think back just that short time and remember who was/is on his side.
But, then again, I guess he is working so hard on Bipartisanship that he doesn’t have the time for us.
A quote like that makes it pretty clear to me that our president has never actually read a blog. . . at least not any of the ones I read.
I like watertiger’s reaction to that quote:
As Watertiger mentioned last night, he was saying this in the context of calling for a bailout of the TradMed.
Now, as has been pointed out repeatedly (usually by TradMedders raging against the dying of their favorite media forms), bloggers likely wouldn’t exist if the TradMed didn’t give them stories to pick apart, but the very fact that we must clean up after them — much like how Peter Norton became a very rich man cleaning up after Microsoft’s virus-vulnerable operating systems — indicates that something deeper is wrong with them.
It would be fun to compare the daily output of a blog like FDL or HuffPo or Daily Kos to an issue of a nationally-oriented paper like the WaPo or the WJS or NYT, in terms of both quality and quantity. Yes, we have our occasional crazy persons, but unlike those three newspapers, we don’t pay them six- and seven-figure salaries.
Plus, besides Marcy, we have guys like Jason and Spencer and other actual journalists, people who have broken actual stories.
with no serious fact-checking, no serious attempts to put stories in context
Well it’s always “serious” when our elites decide to go to war based on NOTHING WHATSOEVER…
When the elites decide wiretapping, kidnaping, torture and murder is just the cat’s pajamas…
When people are dying because they can’t get health care and SERIOUS newpaper pundits do their level best to LIE about the most reasonable, cheapest solution, the public option…
This clearly calls for a blogger ethics death panel.
Well, Obama did post at the Daily Kos back early in his Senate days.
Amen.
Jeez Louise.
Barry thinks that he can scare the
liberalsReal Democrats into backing him by waving the specter of a Republican takeover of the House next year, if we all don’t get behind him and take what it is that he is selling. That was the point of Biden getting out there today and warning that if the health care reform doesn’t pass, the Republicans will have a good chance of taking over. The crux is that the Blue Dogs – Barry among them – hate big Dem majorities. The numbers work against the Blue Dogs having power when the Dems have big majorities, and enhance the Blue Dogs’ power when the Dem majority is small. In the small-majority situation a single Blue Dog, by waffling and wavering like Joe Lieberman does, can influence policy in the direction of his corporate overlords, and against the Real Democrats.
The problem for Barry is – the Real Democrats have gone through the wilderness of the Bush years. We were right every stinking time, and got nothing but scorn every stinking time. We are not the ones whose historical legacy will be of being an ineffectual President who accomplished little, if anything, in the face of united opposition. We told him, time and again, that what he was doing was wrong. And he scorned us every time.
When his aide expressed a sentiment shared by the party’s base – he fired the aide. When a group that supported him and registered huge numbers of voters for him, got punked by a couple of stunt artists (who they reported to the police), he tried to have that group – not the stunt artists – obliterated. When a “friend” in the Senate campaigned against him and for the Republican candidate – he let that “friend” retain a powerful committee chairmanship.
After a while, the pattern becomes clear. He does not share any values with Real Democrats, and hates them perhaps more than he does Republicans. Actions speak louder than words.
I say – Real Democrats should sit on their hands next year. Barry wanted to fuck us over and did so time and again. He sucked up to Republicans’ asses time and again and got not so much as a thank you for it, while regularly beating up on the base of the Democratic party. That kind of behavior has to have repercussions – let him lose the House.
And, then, when the House is controlled by the Republicans, he can weather (or not) the storm of their impeaching him for not being a native born Citizen, ratifying torture, warrantless wiretapping and all the rest. Because the Republicans will – they cannot help themselves.
He has shown us the back of his hand not just once, but repeatedly. There comes a time when that means you must let him see your back.
Well, first of all, I think putting things in context and fact-checking for the MSM is what we do.
The list of what the traditional news has gotten wrong by not being careful or by being too cozy with the people they’re supposed to cover is a long one, but we can certainly start with the Iraq War.
Like the ones who voted for Ned Lamont in the 2006 general. Or not.
The MSM is doing such a dandy job of putting things in context.
I think the tussle between old and new print media isn’t going to be impacted substantially by Obama, regardless of what his opinion may be.
Personally, I think more original reporting in the blogosphere would be a good thing and that is clearly where we’re headed.
Meanwhile, the MSM, putting things in context is worrying about has been John Edwards sex life. Has anyone mentioned that the Mass. senate passed a measure to allow the gov to name a temp replacement for Kennedy’s seat which he is expected to do by the end of the week.

I would agree with Barack Obama if what he meant was there wasn’t a lot of mutual understanding between FDL’s Marcy Wheeler and the WaPo0’s op-ed columnist Victoria Toensing with regard to the facts of the Libby trial.
But he needs to be much clearer than simply using a word like “blogosphere.” Is he talking about Atlas Juggs? Ann Althouse? Michelle Malkin? Nico Pitney? Arianna Huffington? Christy Hardin Smith?
More specificity, Barack; fewer generalizations, please. As you yourself might say: more light, less heat. And watch where you aim that megaphone, please.
christ! could he be any more bitter about not being able to completely supress with a phone call any left-media stories the white house dosent dosen’t want published? can he possibly be any more sour grapes about not having a complete monopoly of the media cycle anymore? could he whine any louder that he cant rely on some cocktail party washington whore to be checking all the “facts”? wow! what a TREMENDOUS douchebag.
Just when the NYTimes justifies its existence last week with the series on polluted water(now a lot of clicking to find), they leave that crap that wouldn’t pass TMZ’s standards about Edwards up all weekend.
Obama “”Journalistic integrity, you know, fact-based reporting, serious investigative reporting, how to retain those ethics in all these different new media and how to make sure that it’s paid for, is really a challenge,” Mr. Obama said. “But it’s something that I think is absolutely critical to the health of our democracy.”
Was Obama asleep in the run up to the invasion of Iraq? Christ all mighty it was the very lack of “journalistic integrity” and lack of “fact based reporting, serious investigative reporting” that had all of us running to the blogosphere for some fact based information. Judy Miller feeding lies to the world via the NYT. Bob Woodward and crew at the WaPo rolling over to the endlesse lies coming out of the Bush administration. Chris Matthews was asking some questions about the validity of the intelligence and Scooter Libby made a few phone calls to Tim Russert to try to shut Matthews up.
hell they kicked Phil donahues ass off the MSM because he was asking logical questions about the validity of the pre war intelligence.
Lots of people dead, injured and displaced partially due to the serious lack of “investigative reporting” in the run up to Iraq.
No Mr.President we can not count on “journalistic integrity” out of the MSM. Does Obama come to the blogosphere to read the investigative work of Marcy, Jane, Christy, Spencer, Glenn Greenwald, and so many more.
We will not go back and he better get with the program or be left in the dust in regard to what is taking place in the blogosphere.
