One other response that comes with a certain amount of regularity is “Oh, I’d love to talk about this. Call such-and-such in my office to set something up. . .” I usually respond with, “OK, I will. Will you direct such-and-such to schedule some time for us?” And then I’m told one of two things, “Yes,” or, “Just call such-and-such and we’ll see what we can do.” Of course, the latter is a blow-off, but the former I take as a commitment.
So, it is frustrating when staffers working for Representatives that have promised me time – especially those Representatives that have enjoyed and benefited from FDL support – are less than responsive to my follow-up interview requests. I mean, if you cannot trust the word of a Congressman or Congresswoman, well, Progressive politics just cannot work. And these Representatives need to know as much.
Look.
I’m not asking for a kidney. These folks aren’t expected to sacrifice their first born upon an altar to FDL. Hell, we didn’t punish anyone for voting the wrong way in the past on important issues like the war supplemental. In fact, we’ve even rewarded good behavior, and simply asked for answers when we see behavior we don’t understand. In short, we’ve been good, engaged, informed and responsible citizens. What we need are responsive and accountable leaders.
I’m on the Hill virtually every day Congress is in session. I know these folks are busy. I know they are “Very Important People.” Of course they cannot accept every single meeting request that passes across their desk.
But, I have to wonder, how many of them have bumped a lobbyist for Humana, or Bank of America, or Lockheed Martin to make time for citizen-driven work like the kind being done by FDL?
Instead of calling out the unresponsive by name, tonight I want to give credit where credit is due. Jared Polis and Mike Capuono have each acted in ways that concerned those of us working on health care here at FDL. Each one of them immediately manned-up and sat down with me for an interview. Those videos are posted in this entry. So, if these guys can sit with me and take responsibility for their votes or remarks, why can’t our health care champions – folks that we believe are on our side – why can’t they sit down with us for a few minutes? Why am I forced to talk with them on the sidewalk and in office hallways?
To be clear, the following list is NOT a list of Representatives fleeing accountability. It is a list of Representatives that I’d like to interview this week. I’ll be in touch with their schedulers, press secretaries and communication directors, asking for interviews. I’ve been working on this all day today and I’ll continue throughout the day tomorrow. My advice to FDLers is to note which Representatives make time for us. Consideration is a two-way street and the offices that respect you and your support, in this man’s humble opinion, are the folks most deserving of your support.
Rush Holt, Mary Jo Kilroy, Eric Massa, Albio Sires, Lloyd Doggett, Jim McDermott, Gerald Connolly, Paul Hodes, Jackie Speier, Donna Edwards, James McGovern, Linda Sanchez, Phil Hare, John Yarmuth, Chellie Pingree, Andre Carson, John Lewis, Anna Eshoo, Loretta Sanchez, Hank Johnson, Peter Stark, Robert Wexler, Emanuel Cleaver, Gregorio Sablan, Corrine Brown, Corrine Brown, Alcee Hastings, Barbara Lee, Barney Frank, Bennie Thompson, Bill Delahunt, Bill Pascrell, Bob Filner, Carolyn Kilpatrick, Carolyn Maloney, Chaka Fattah, Dennis Kucinich, Diane Watson, Donald Payne, Earl Blumenauer, Ed Towns, Eddie Bernice Johnson, Elijah Cummings, Emanuel Cleaver, Grace Napolitano, Gwen Moore, Jerry Nadler, Jesse Jackson, Jr., John Conyers, John Olver, John Tierney, Jose Serrano, Judy Chu, Laura Richardson, Lucille Roybal-Alard, Luis Gutierrez, Lynn Woolsey, Marcia Fudge, Marcy Kaptur, Maurice Hinchey, Maxine Waters, Mazie Hirono, Mel Watts, Michael Honda, Nydia Velázquez, Peter DeFazio, Robert Wexler, Sheila Jackson Lee, and William Lacy Clay.

About FDL Action
Picky note…Robert Wexler is listed twice. Good luck!
hell-o, McFly !!!
Congressman Grijalva today
Without a doubt. The problem is it seems that everytime we find one they somehow undergo this mysterious surgery that causes their spines to be supplanted by noodles and their PR folks to start kicking out press releases saying that what they said is not what they mean.
“Democratic Leadership”: the new oxymoron. Heavy on the moron.
Keep at it, Mike. I’m feeling optimistic.
Would it be helpful for constituents to contact their rep and say, hey it would be great if you gave some time to Mike Stark? Or, hey, why won’t you meet with Mike Stark?
Max, when you’re done with that blunt, mind if I take a hit?
Mike Stark speaks for me!
You keep taking names, dude, and when you need it, we will kick some (metaphorical) ass.
Way to go.
Make sure you get McDermott!! I’m one of his constituents and when I called and talked to his aide and asked if he would vote “no” to a bill that didn’t include a public option he said he would (vote no that is). He’s a stand up guy, and I would expect that he would give an interview without equivocation. So to, Senators Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell.
Hey Mike!
Would you please see if Jackie Speier stands by the sentiment of the Sebellius letter that Jane Hamsher keeps insisting she signed. Her press relations guy, Mike Larsen, has been insisting she won’t sign the firedoglake.com pledge. It would be nice if somebody could nail her down one way or another.
That some of the progressives are getting squishy is an indication that Obama’s strategy of getting Blue Dogs and the majority mainline Democrats onboard and peeling off progressives as needed is still on track.
have you written a Letter to the Editor? expressing your frustration with her lack of clarity ?
you can even throw in some 4-1-1 about what it would do for the district -
linky for that here
It should be pointed out that we are looking out for these elected officials best interests. Forcing people to purchase overpriced, weak-tea insurance with no public option to drive down costs are going to cause a lot of politicians to lose their jobs.
to make it easier to find specific reps, here is the list in alphabetical order

Mike — I have a cell phone number for you for Mary Jo Kilroy’s communications director. You can contact me at (614) 571-5604.
Accountability, hahaha. Whether we’re a democracy is a bogus question: we’ve sacrificed democracy in lieu of representation long ago. In the name of expediency.
Lobbyists understand this, and have been exploiting the fact for decades.
The influence of any lobbyist trumps the interest any single voter.
O.K. Ohio folks and others I have been saying for months now that Senator Voinovich is not a lost cause in regard to getting on the bus for the “public option” When I called several of his offices during August the head health care aide (have his name in my notes somewhere) said that Voinovich was not in NOT in support of the public option. His head aide in the Cleveland office said that Voinovich had his “concerns” about the public option.(had longer discussions with both aides)
There is a huge space between “not” in support and “concerns” about the public option.
Tonight on Chris Matthews Hardball Voinovich came up as well as Collins, Lugar and Corker as possible switch hitters.
Howard Fineman said that Voinovich “is the guy to watch” Chuck Todd agreed.
I have called Voinovich quite a bit…let’s keep applying pressure. Call him tell him your story or someone else who does not have health care or has been screwed over by an insurance company.
Keep pushing Voinovich. He is still a possibility.
202-224-3353. Call, email, go to his office. There is a contact form at this website (am unable to link from this computer)
Make an appointment with his scheduler. Contact your email list encourage others to contact Voinovich….push/encourage him to support the public option
Thank you! Hearing Mr. Polis’ reasoning for not taking the pledge and rejecting the surcharge restores my faith in him. Nedless to say, the MSM has done nothing to make his position clear here in
Colorado.
Mike, as far as I’m concerned, the impact you are having by documenting in video form the answers of our federal representatives, to your pointed and informed questions, is both incredibly significant and powerfully groundbreaking to an extent perhaps far beyond that you can even envision yourself at this stage.
Your FDL-directed efforts on the ground in D.C. may even make the difference, in the end, in the public insurance option debate.
You literally represent tens of millions of fellow Americans, who have no way to be present in D.C., or to evade, as the corporate lobbyists with their promises of cash rewards do, the suffocating filters our representatives have erected between themselves and their constituents, in the thoroughly-compromised and corrupt environment of Capitol Hill. You are perhaps the sole lobbyist for the interests of the American people on the ground there – and you don’t want a secret meeting, you want America to know what you heard from our lawmakers.
Your lobbying effort – in addition to putting the “public” back into public office, to great resistance from legislators used to their self-serving private deals – is “selling” the enhanced well-being of the greatest number of your fellow citizens, in the founding tradition of forging a more perfect union. Your for-profit lobbyist competitors – the ones who take up all the private meeting time of the Too-Important-For-Little-People legislators – are selling personal gain for the incumbent legislator, and for their corporate employer(s). That’s an extremely stark difference, and seeing it on video is really the only way in modern America to hammer that difference home.
A doctor commenting recently on DailyKos (fayea), described the battle for a public insurance option well, by calling it “the public option and the principles for which it stands.” The more of those fundamental principles you can enunciate in your questions to legislators, the better. The clearer the concept, the more just the cause, the better we can expose those federal legislators unable or unwilling to publicly admit, with the courage of their convictions, where their real loyalties lie.
Here’s a bit more from fayea’s comment, pointing out that insurance premiums even for small medical practices are going through the roof [in other words, doctors get it coming and going - insurers referee the care of their patients, while simultaneously impeding their own ability to insure themselves, their nurses, and their office/insurance billing staff]:
Of course, fayea is one of the voices Congress made sure we didn’t hear from in this debate, in their pro forma public hearings, by and large. Congressional hearings are now more often than not little more than a successful effort to censor – by limiting those experts permitted to testify to the High and Mighty, and by ridiculously truncating the questions that can be asked and answered (firing squads mandatory, with collective consent, for those exceeding five(!)-minute rounds).
FDL and Mike Stark are trying to overcome the effects of that Congressionally-imposed censorship, so as to allow the will of the American people to be heard. For their dedicated, often-thankless efforts, the tireless citizens behind firedoglake.com deserve enormous credit, and generous support – particularly from those few with the capacity to give without pain, in the name of a better standard of living for all.
Thanks, Paul!
If we can get Voinovich to bail, Snowe might even follow. Good job!
I have been encouraging folks in Ohio to call, email, visit him. But hoping that FDL picks up the call and pushes a united effort to encourage Voinovich to act his conscience. I believe he has one
here is the clip to the Hardball switch hitters talk
Face of the health care bill in question

Howard Fineman “Voinovich is the guy to watch” Chuck Todd agreed
LET’S NOT JUST WATCH LET’S GENTLY BUT FIRMLY PUSH VOINOVICH
This was a while back..some phone calls to Voinovich’s offices
Posted this at Ew’s place
Just called the district office of Senator Voinovich in Nelsonville Ohio (740-441-6410) Ohio for his schedule in August. Katie at the office did not have much information and let me know that South East Ohio does not have a district Rep at this time. She could not tell me anything about Voinovich’s schedule for August and recommended that I call the Washington office (202-224-3353)
Called the D.C. office and Joe was not very friendly (let me know they have been getting these calls). I let him know that I was a member of group of folks here in Athens who are all respectful single payer advocates and had no plans to interrupt any town hall events or any other events that Senator Voinvovich would be holding. That what we were interested in were thoughtful, respectful dialogue. Joe said that there are no town hall meetings on Voinovich’s schedule. I asked what Voinovich’s stance was on Health Care Reform? These are Joe’s exact words “he opposes both single payer and the public option” I then asked what does he support. Joe answered “the Senator supports increasing competition and lowering cost”
I asked “how does he suggest that happen” Joe “the public should be able to go over state lines to access health care plans”
I then called the Cleveland office (216-522-7095. Spoke with Lucy (she also said that they have been receiving lots of calls) She suggested I talk with our district Rep I let her know that there was no Voinovich district rep in s.e. ohio. She put me through to John who was the most helpful person I spoke with. Let him know we wanted to get with Voinovich directly
Set up a meeting with Voinovich during the recess. Here is Voinovich’s direct scheduler.
Beth Martins
Fax 216-522-7097
email bethmartins@voinovich.senate.gov
Now here is the best part of these calls. When I asked John (who was the most helpful and well informed)what Senator Voinovich’s stance was on health care reform. He said that Voinovich had “concerns” about single payer and the public option. When I let John know that Joe in the D.C. office had said that the Senator “opposed” both single payer and the public option. John repeated that the Senator had “concerns”
John and I had a short conversation about the distance between “oppose” and “concerns” He agreed.
I hope folks in Ohio contact Voinovich and slip through the crack between “oppose” and ‘concerns”. Sounds like we can work on Voinovich. Touch his what I believe to be truly compassionate bone in his body.
VOINOVICH SCHEDULER…MAKE AN APPOINTMENT TO GO SEE VOINOVICH (hope to see him in October)

Mike,
When you got Doggett on tape, it pissed me off because I had, at that point in time, two calls and two emails into his office asking the same questions, and I could not get a response.
Similarly, I have calls into his office now, again, without response aside from a young harried staffer blowing me off (albeit politely). Perhaps we need a clinic on how to get through the screeners so we can speak to someone who actually knows what is going on.
The often young staffers will connect you up with the aides who know more..and they will call you back. Just be oh so sweet, reasonable but knowledgeable (they hate that really)
You can make an appointment to talk with an aide who knows far more. or contact their scheduler and make a special trip to D.C. with a group of folks from the Reps district. Worth the time
I keep getting junk e-mail from Eric Massa, so I keep encouraging him to declare that he will refuse to vote for a bill that doesn’t have a public option.
My father had good insurance but his procedure was rationed to three days, this is his outcome and in TN and VA it’s called quality health care. http://www.wisecountyissues.com/?p=62 Those three days turned into a ten month long nightmare. I’ve been contacting my congressman concerning the status quo for several years now and get either an excuse or no reply, good luck with those on your list, we must have public option in the bill.
I contacted my congressman through his website and sent him this:
I expect him to be happy to speak with you.
