The American Future Fund is going to be running ads supporting Blue Dogs and their efforts to kill the public option:
The American Future Fund, a conservative group, has just announced a national television campaign defending the Blue Dogs, including Peterson. The Minnesota script, which starts, "Is our congressman, Collin Peterson, brain dead?" refers to Rep. Pete Stark, D-Calif., who recently called the Blue Dogs "brain dead" and beholden to insurance companies.
In fact, the Blue Dog Political Action Committee has raked in more than $1.1 million for the 2010 election cycle, the most of any other leadership PAC on Capitol Hill, according to CQ MoneyLine. About $300,000 of that came from health care interests.
The American Future Fund is a 501(c)4 nonprofit that does not have to reveal its funding source and is not governed by the FEC. Key players in the group include GOP operatives like media strategist Larry McCarthy, the Ailes Communications veteran who produced the Willie Horton ad for George H.W. Bush. Last year the AFF ran an ad against Al Franken which triggered a complaint to the FEC from the Minnesota Democratic-Farm-Labor Party, saying the ad constituted electoral advocacy and was outside the bounds of what a nonprofit is allowed to do. The FEC found that there was no violation.
The pro-Blue Dog ads will also run in the districts of Mike Ross and Baron Hill, as well as in Washington DC. Text of the ad:
Is our Congressman Collin Peterson brain dead? It’s a serious question. One of the Democratic leaders on health care is Pete Stark, a liberal and close ally of Nancy Pelosi. Stark said that moderates like Peterson were "brain dead" for opposing a government takeover of health care Stark accused Peterson and other moderates of "selling out" for insurance company donations. Sounds like Stark is accusing Congressman Peterson of "bribery."
Tell Congress: No government run health care.
The ads refer to Pete Stark’s comments saying that Blue Dogs were "brain dead," that they "just want to cause trouble" and are "looking to raise money from insurance companies and promote a right-wing agenda." The Washington Post recently reported that Blue Dogs were breaking fundraising records this year and that half their donations came from health care interests. They also found that the typical Blue Dog receives 25% more in health care industry donations than other Democrats, "putting them closer to Republicans in attracting industry support."
Mike Ross came out against the public option last week. PhRMA has been running positive ads for both Ross and Baron Hill.
Pete Stark is one of the 60 Democrats who signed the letter to Nancy Pelosi, saying he would vote against any bill that does not have a public option. Rep. Raul Grijalva and the Progressive Caucus will be whipping this week to see if he and other signatories hold firm.

Ugh, I’m still trying to figure out whether to rake my blue dog over the coals in a couple of weeks at our Jefferson Jackson dinner or to try a more positive approach.
The Blue Dogs have to go… if this helps I am glad.
OT – John Tierney has decided to stay in the House and not run for Senator Kennedy’s seat.
It’s pathetic that people who signed the letter still need to be whipped. Their word means nothing.
I am not sure this is going to work for the Blue Cross dogs. It will have the effect of amplifying Stark’s remarks. What if people start to think that maybe Stark was on to something.
that ad is a messaging mess – who are the targets ? low information types or independents ? both ?
per another of Jane’s predictions -
phRMA launching $150M campaign in favor of Baucus plan
That is why I am more and more turned off to politics. Of course that is just what health insurance parasites want, but still…
In a way the ads are a good sign, it means that special interests are feeling some heat.
yeah, i was puzzled to see an attack ad repeating all of starks relelvant (and perfectly true) attack points. Most people watching that are going to hear “brain dead” and “taking insurance industry money” both are demonstrable points
I saw this ad last night. Frankly, I agree with it. It is bribery, and the blue dogs are indeed brain dead. I’m not sure why right wing groups would be running ads bolstering the progressive agenda, but here we are.
It’s interesting that the ad DOESN’T dispute that these Blue Dogs have taken in all of this money. Counter ads should mention the amount that each has taken and point out that it’s not in dispute in their “swift boat” ad! It screams “Pay to Play”!
You’re so right! The very fact that the right would single out 2 blue dogs who support the GOP position is not a good thing since the GOP looks pretty obvious in their opposition to any bill. Perhaps a good counter ad shoud ask the question, just whose side are the blue dogs on? The American people or the GOP and the insurance industry?
Interesting. I could have sworn Stark called them “brain dead” for opposing a public option (which is a far, far cry from a Government takeover) supported by around 78% of their constituents.
Ummm… No, he’s accusing the insurance companies of bribery, and Peterson of accepting bribes.
Honestly! You’d think that with $150M to spend they could at least get some simple things right. Maybe they are really campaigning FOR the public option, but want it to seem like they are opposed, although I can’t figure out why.
The ad seems to be more on the lines of Rahm-reform: Get something, anything out & claim victory.
Progressives do not reach the “general public” by the internet. Until there is a concerted effort to counter the deceptions and outright lies of the right in both broadcast and print media progressives are at a disadvantage. A media blitz by the right might actually begin to cause an erosion of strong support for the public option. The right wing knows this. Why doesn’t liberal/progressives begin mounting a vigorous challenge to the lies on the public airwaves?
How is it that a 501(c)4 does not have to reveal its funding source? I thought all non-profits were subject to public disclosure. Maybe not to the FEC because it’s an “issue-oriented” ad, but I thought there had to be some public disclosure.
On a related topic. A co-worker just sent me this link. I LOVE it, but wonder if irony still works in America?

Can we stop calling them Blue Dogs, and call them Curs instead?
Isn’t the AFL-CIO meeting in Pittsburgh right now? They could have some of the resources to help mount a counter campaign.
That’s how I’ve been referring to them for a while now.
The following is the text from an email I just got from Organizing for America.
“Last Wednesday, President Obama called on our representatives to pass health reform that brings stability and security to Americans who have insurance, affordable coverage to those who don’t, and reins in the cost of care.
Now, it’s our turn. After last week’s speech, members of Congress have no doubt about where the President stands. But to win this fight, we must show that Americans from every state and every background support his plan — and we need Congress to do the same.
Click here to call your representatives, and then tell us how it went. According to our records, you live in Florida’s 1st congressional district. Please call:
Sen. Bill Nelson’s Tallahassee office at (850) 942-8415
Sen. Mel Martinez’s Pensacola office at (850) 433-2603
Rep. Jeff Miller’s Pensacola office at (850) 479-1183
Call Congress
(Not your representatives? Click here to look yours up.)
Call your representatives, and tell whoever answers where you are from and that you watched the President’s address.
Then tell them that you want your representatives to support the President’s plan, ask them where they stand — and thank them if they already clearly support it.
Don’t forget to click here to let us know what they said.
Hundreds of thousands of folks will be calling, so please try again if you get a busy signal.
This movement has brought us to a historic moment where reform is within reach. Now your energy and commitment are needed to get us the rest of the way.
Please call today:

After reading the ad text, I had to reread the rest several times to be sure I understood correctly that this was meant as a pro-Peterson anti-Stark ad. It repeats and leaves hanging the notion that the insurance companies are bribing and Peterson is taking. I love it.
I knew I wasn’t the first to think of that!
So, how is it that politicians are allowed to take campaign contributions from industry of any type? Oh, thats right-neither party has the cojones to pass real campaign finance reform.
Here is what the districts that they are airing it in tell me. They are trying to sway enough public opinion in districts in which Blue Dogs are acting contrary to their constituents’ wishes so that the Blue Dog doesn’t get punished for his opposition. In other words, if Baron Hill and Mike Ross are getting squishy enough to require an ad like this, something is going on in their districts. This is a backstop-your-guy sorta ad.

O’s begging Wall St. to be responsible. It’s pitiful.
and distressing
I left distress behind about 9 months ago. I’m into major depression. It becomes more hopeless every day.
He expects them to be “responsible” all on their own? If he thinks they’ll police themselves without strong regs and oversight he has to be criminally naive. Another possibility is that he’s in on the scam, with Rahm as his main man it’s not beyond the realm of possibility.
No, he talked about the need for new regulations. But then he went on to say that Wall St. didn’t need to wait for them to act responsibly. As if they ever would. That’s what was so pitiful.
I think he’s benefitting right now to the extent of campaign contributions, which is plenty of incentive not to understand the nature of the problem.
Of course, as usual, O paid lip service to what needs to be done. Raising the age old Q of whether lip service is better than no service at all.
I had to flip off the cnbc post-speech commentary when they got to the part where they said that regulation had never and could never prevent the next financial crisis.
The corporate media is truly pathetic. Unless there is a viable alternative to the corporate money that frames what the public sees then the experiment in self rule is toast. The internet alone isn’t going to do it. Where’s the big money that could establish a legitimate news network?
Well, the internet is all we got.
And all these years I was under the impression that the air waves were owned by the Public.

American Future Fund & Iowa Future Fund, 501(c)(4) GOP Fronts

But the big money and dirty tricks aren’t confined to presidential politics this year.
American Future Fund (AFF) is running ads in support of Senator Norm Coleman (R-Minnesota) while Iowa Future Fund (IFF)is running ads against Governor Chet Culver (D-Iowa) and there has been speculation in the media as to who is behind AFF and IFF. The other day, Paul Kiel at TPM Muckraker posted about it as have the Des Moines Register and Minnesota Public Radio, among others.
Last week, Minnesota Democrats filed an FEC complaint against American Future Fund.
Mrs Panstreppon’s diary
According to Stu Rothenberg at the Rothenberg Report, Republican operatives Ben Ginsberg and Edward T. Tobin III are also involved in IFF and AFF. Ginsberg, former counsel to the Bush-Cheney campaign, is a partner in Patton Boggs’s public policy and lobbying group. Tobin, former executive director of the Republican Governors Association, is a partner in Wilmer Hale’s fairly new Public Policy and Strategy Group.

Hey, let them use the B-word: Bribery! Make it clear what’s going on.
By the way, a few letters sent to the biggest paper in Collin Peterson’s district sure wouldn’t hurt: http://www.bemidjipioneer.com/…..ail_id/48/
Key points:
– Swift-Boaters are behind these ads
– Arch-Blue Dog and public option for Mike Ross not only got his original political seed money from his own pharmacy business (http://www.ncpanet.org/members/pdf/digestprofile_ross.pdf), he also is a huge recipent of industry donations (http://www.opensecrets.org/politicians/industries.php?cycle=2010&cid=N00009571&type=C), which causes him to oppose the public option even though a majority of the folks in his own district want it (http://campaignsilo.firedoglake.com/2009/09/14/mike-rosss-district-is-evidently-not-in-arkansas/)
This exact same ad, save for the name, is appearing in our district in Indiana in support of Baron Hill.
screw Rahm, we had better take on these blue dogs and run our ads. They were voted in as Democrats and they better start acting like Democrats.
