One of the manifest triumphs of the internet era is the immediacy with which news is digested and delivered. Those much-vaunted "editors" that beltway journalists once told bloggers we so desperately needed but sadly lacked have now been dispensed with courtesy of Twitter, and we get to see the unvarnished genius of our media elites without mediation as their every thought occurs to them.

Lucky us. Well here’s a the kind of deep, penetrating journalistic insight that Jonathan Alter’s 238 Twitter followers enjoy:

about 11 hours ago: In sum, it’s great for left to push hard for a public option but if Sen. votes not there for PO (and right now they aren’t), take the deal.

In sum, it’s great for the Senate to push hard to kill the PO but if House votes are not there for a bill without it (and there aren’t right now), I’ve recently learned that both houses of Congress get to vote on this. Who knew?

about 11 hours ago Greenwald is smart but a total snake–ready to screw anyone for a post and attack their motives. Am I not supposed to write an Obama book?

For those of Alter’s 238 followers who might not be sufficiently schooled in Alter arcana, "Greenwald" would be the unlinked Glenn Greenwald. No doubt someone with the online expertise of a Joe Klein told him that picking a fight is a good way to boost your subscribers, and as they both know, everybody hates Glenn Greenwald. Well, at least everyone who would willingly cut grandma’s throat to be the next Bob Woodward water-carrier-in-chief, which includes just about everyone they know. By the end of the day, Alter’s feed will no doubt be white-hot with anyone who has ever downed Bloody Marys at Cokie’s.

about 11 hours ago A PO is a good idea, but left has lost perspective. The rest of bill–universal cov, ending discrim. based on preexisting cond. –more impt.

In case you were wondering what Alter’s beef with Glenn Greenwald is, Glenn pointed out that Alter once said "real reform" depended on the inclusion of a public option in any health care bill. When the administration signaled that it would chuck it, Alter quickly joined the Greek chorus of beltway journalists fighting for White House access sufficient to nab them a six-figure book deal and announced it was only liberal fools" who were married to a "PO" and that other parts of the bill were "more impt."

about 11 hours ago PO or bust folks don’t even know that Howard Dean’s proposal in 2004 had no public option. The idea wasn’t even invented til 2005.

An idea floated by Alter’s fellow Journolist fraternity brother Matt Yglesias. Also unlinked. Well, what do you want? Yglesias is a total snake and doesn’t deserve a link, and plus, most people wouldn’t know who he was anyway and would only be confused.

about 11 hours ago The PO is a means to an end. Heavy regulation of the insurance industry–removing their anti-trust exemption–would help. competition.

Because "heavy regulation" of the banking industry worked so well.

about 11 hours ago The confusion comes from my point that "public option or bust" is a stupid position. The PO is important but not worth sinking the bill for.

But "bail out Wellpoint or bust" is a perfectly reasonable position for Evan Bayh to take, since his wife is on the board and he’ll make a bunch of money and all. The small but noteworthy fact that 77% of the country wants a public option, and Democrats nationwide would rather have no health care reform than a bill without a public option, doesn’t bear mentioning.

about 11 hours ago My position is totally consistent: I strongly favor a public option or, failing that, what I call a "souped up" co-op.

Because who needs "real reform "when you can have "necessary but insufficient changes?"

about 11 hours ago Glenn Greenwald attacked me for flip-flopping on a public option because I need access for a book. This is his typical ad hominem tripe.

Yeah, screw Glenn Greenwald and his "ad hominem attacks." He’s a total snake.

about 11 hours ago Taking a shot against Cheney on torture–"Big Time." http://bit.ly/3xbTlo

A link — to himself! Yay. Here, I’ll add another one: "Time to think about torture," by Jonathan Alter, 2001. "Some torture clearly works," he says. Sadly we can’t legalize physical torture, "it’s contrary to American values." So "we’ll have to think about transferring some suspects to our less squeamish allies, even if that’s hypocritical. Nobody said this was going to be pretty."

That Dick Cheney. He’s a snake.

8:50 PM Aug 26th When Teddy Kennedy took me on a tour of the Senate, I learned some of the secrets of his success. Compromise is key. http://bit.ly/2hhYRH

I knew Teddy Kennedy (well enough to call him Teddy), and Glenn Greenwald, you are NO TEDDY KENNEDY! Since you never met him, you should always call him Ted, or perhaps even Edward, since he’s dead now and you’ll never be able to share the kind of intimate relationship that I had with him. Never, Glenn Greenwald. Do you hear me? You total snake.

8:54 PM Aug 23rd Joe Lieberman sells out on health care. I’m shocked! Always been a serious putz but this is shameful. http://bit.ly/1rlWgi

Joe Klein: If you want the kids to love you, go after Lieberman. They eat that shit up.

Jonathan Alter: How about if I call him a "total snake?"

Joe Klein: Nah, save that for the big guns. You gotta give yourself somewhere to go. Remember, we can’t abandon civility. Now that editors are an endangered species, it’s all that separates us from the online barbarians.
