You won’t find Obama saying that maybe the French nation ranks higher because we have three times as high a rate of obesity. No, he won’t mention that.

Here’s another example. World Health Organization ranks health among the countries. The left trumpets that the US is 37th. But, what does that really mean? A lot of factors go into health; proper eating, the amount of violence in society (not only those killed, but the pressure and anxiety it puts on everyone else), exercise, etc. Many factors not related to how our health care system handles those who need it. France, the #1 country has been widely known to have better eating habits among its people than the US for a long time.

The waiting time study was done after the Canadian government passed a law establishing the Wait Time Reduction Fund. I think you can Google that too if you are not too lazy.

Big Pharma, according to the OECD, a very pro-single payer group, the percentage of total health care costs from pharma products is about 12% in the US. Canada is 18%. France 16%. Germany 15%. The last figure for UK was 15%.

So, I guess Big Pharma isn’t really so bad.

Big Insurance: Insurance companies pay out 85% of all money taken in to reimburse hospitals and doctors for the bills submitted. In other words, 85% of their income goes to pay the cost of health care services. So, that leaves 15% for profit, paying employees and office rent, etc. Profit margin is from 4% to 7%. That is normal for most any large company. But, even if you took away all of their costs, you would only lower total health care costs by 15%. Public option still have to pay employees, etc., so at the most you will save 8 or 9%, and that is a maybe.

As for insurance companies turning down people for a procedure, etc., what, do you think the government is going to approve you for every thing you want at any time you want it? That is a pipe dream if you think that is going to happen.

UK has a NICE board which turns down people regularly for various reasons. The other way it is handled is yes, you get approved, but first you must get on a waiting list to see a specialist, and THEN you have to get on a waiting list for surgery–if the specialist approves it and the board approve it. Nearly 40% of the people who had to wait to see a special and then got approved for surgery had to wait more than 4 months to get the surgery. OECD wait time study. IN the US, the percentage of people waiting more than 4 months is 5%. And, they likely saw the specialist within a week or two of request.

You are going to change a large system to really solve a problem experienced by a very small percentage of the population. The uninsured, when you take our illegals and others that really don’t fall under that category is maybe around 7% of the population. The percentage of those who actually need a service they can’t get in any one year is maybe less than half of that group. So, you have a problem for maybe 4% of the population. To solve that 4%, you are ready to throw the remaining 80% into the great unknown and likely a rationed system like in other places. From very few waiting, to many waiting in order to help 4% of the population.

Yes, there are many anecdotes of this person or that having some trouble. 4% is still about 12,000,000 people, so for sure you will have many anecdotes of hard times. But, the problem of the 12,000,000 can be solved without upending the entire system.

Lastly, if big insurance and big pharm are not the bogey men you’ve been told. Then who IS responsible for the huge run up in costs???
