Mike Farrell, long-time friend of FDL, congratulates Progress Illinois for all their hard work on the whip count effort and Reps. Louis Gutierrez, Phil Hare and Jesse Jackson Jr. for their commitment to vote against any health care bill that does not have a public option:
Real health care reform in this country will not happen without the public option. Now that’s just a fact. And it’s only because of the hard work of true grassroots activists that the public option is still alive.
So, on behalf of FDL Action, thank you Progress Illinois for your amazing commitment to this human rights issue.
The fight’s not over. Not by a long shot. And we can’t let the insurance industry, the special interests and their high-priced lobbyists kill meaningful reform again. This is our chance to provide health care to 50 million uninsured Americans ⎯ and we may not get another one.
President Obama says the public option is the best way to keep insurance companies from exploiting our citizens. And polling shows strong support for it. But the usual suspects are spending millions of dollars to frighten and confuse people. And we can’t let them win. Not this time.
Please support Representatives Luis Gutierrez, Phil Hare, and Jesse Jackson Jr. for joining together with over 60 progressive members of Congress and pledging to stop any bill from getting to the President’s desk that doesn’t have a public option.
Let’s keep up the good fight. We’re counting on you to hold the line.
Thanks for listening.
The script was written by our own Blue Texan. Progress Illinois has done a great job covering the work that Illinois state reps have done on health care.
We’ll be rolling out thank-you videos to other state blogs as the week goes on. As we’ve noted before, the work done by state blogs has been vital to the whip count effort and to raising the $408,000 to thank the members of Congress who have pledged to oppose any health care bill that doesn’t have a public option.
To date, there has been $4,542 raised for Phil Hare, $4,579 for Luis Gutierrez and $4,086 raised for Jesse Jackson Jr. in order to thank them for their commitment as part of the effort. In addition, we’ve raised another $915 for Hare after he took the FDL pledge.

Chuga chuga chuga chuga, woo hoooooooo!!!!
But he still didn’t tell us what BJ stands for.
I saw Farrell making some remarks on TV once, and he mentioned our Founding Fathers. But he is so over-the-top and round-the-bend p.c. that he couldn’t bring himself to speak such an awful phrase. So he actually said — and I kid you not — “Founding Parents.”
Wow.
Kyeo — you must have missed an episode. His parents were Bea and Jay Hunnicutt.
I’ve tried to raise this question before but got no answer, so I’ll try again.
I LOVE what you’re doing, please don’t get me wrong, but I’m old and have seen far too many times the law of “unintended consequences” so I have to ask this because I’m no lawyer and am very unclear on the bribery laws with relation to public officials.
I’m pretty sure that giving an elected official campaign contributions in return for a specific vote a specific way is illegal. In other words, it would be illegal for BCBS to give Senator McConnel a million dollars in campaign funds in exchange for voting against a bill BCBS didn’t like. At least I used to be pretty sure.
Aren’t we skirting right up against that when we raise funds for someone pledging to vote a certain way?
I’m just asking, because I know damned well if there’s any doubt, the right wing will jump all over it at some point.
Get him started on the death penalty…A man who understands pure evil and not afraid to speak out…O My…a Truth teller—yes, a rare bird in these days.
Make fun of him all you want, but Mike Farrell has put himself out there for decades fighting for the rights of others. I suspect it’s had an impact on his career, but he still persists in standing up for that in which he believes.
Guess he was thinking of Abigail, wife of John Adams, who said to him “John, don’t forget the ladies.”
Precisely which is why I ask where is this money going and how is it used and what strings are attached if any?
I am for publicly financed elections and therefore oppose ANY private contributions to government officials.
But if you have to do this disgusting thing you should at least exact a pledge from the recipients that they will sponsor or vocally support/co sponsor legislation for public finance and legislation to prohibit members of congress from accepting campaign contributions while in office.
Ha ha! Betsy Ross and others as well.
Fair enough!
Last I looked, Abigail Adams was a mother, not a father. Farrell was simply following her injunction to “Remember the ladies”.
Yupper! But of course John did.
Mike Farrell is a supporter of HR 676, Medicare for All.
That’s great!!!

Let’s look at some facts for health care.
Who are the bogey men promoted by Obama, Pelosi, etc.?
Big Pharma and Big insurance.
Big Pharma, according to the OECD, a very pro-single payer group, the percentage of total health care costs from pharma products is about 12% in the US. Canada is 18%. France 16%. Germany 15%. The last figure for UK was 15%.
OECD Health Data, Frequently Requested Data. 2007
So, I guess Big Pharma isn’t really so bad.
Big Insurance: Insurance companies pay out 85% of all money taken in to reimburse hospitals and doctors for the bills submitted. In other words, 85% of their income goes to pay the cost of health care services. So, that leaves 15% for profit, paying employees and office rent, etc. Profit margin is from 4% to 7%. That is normal for most any large company. But, even if you took away all of their costs, you would only lower total health care costs by 15%. Public option still have to pay employees, etc., so at the most you will save 8 or 9%, and that is a maybe.
As for insurance companies turning down people for a procedure, etc., what, do you think the government is going to approve you for every thing you want at any time you want it? That is a pipe dream if you think that is going to happen.
UK has a NICE board which turns down people regularly for various reasons. The other way it is handled is yes, you get approved, but first you must get on a waiting list to see a specialist, and THEN you have to get on a waiting list for surgery–if the specialist approves it and the board approve it. Nearly 40% of the people who had to wait to see a special and then got approved for surgery had to wait more than 4 months to get the surgery. OECD wait time study. IN the US, the percentage of people waiting more than 4 months is 5%. And, they likely saw the specialist within a week or two of request.
Let’s leave the pipe dreams behind.
You are going to change a large system to really solve a problem experienced by a very small percentage of the population. The uninsured, when you take our illegals and others that really don’t fall under that category is maybe around 7% of the population. The percentage of those who actually need a service they can’t get in any one year is maybe less than half of that group. So, you have a problem for maybe 4% of the population. To solve that 4%, you are ready to throw the remaining 80% into the great unknown and likely a rationed system like in other places. From very few waiting, to many waiting in order to help 4% of the population.
Yes, there are many anecdotes of this person or that having some trouble. 4% is still about 12,000,000 people, so for sure you will have many anecdotes of hard times. But, the problem of the 12,000,000 can be solved without upending the entire system.
Lastly, if big insurance and big pharm are not the bogey men you’ve been told. Then who IS responsible for the huge run up in costs???
Funny, I didn’t see a link there.
Makes sense though, since those numbers are COMPLETE BULLSHIT pulled from someone’s ass.
Insurance companies pay out 85%????
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
On a GOOD day it’s 70%.
That’s ok though, we’re quite used to opponents just making shit up out of thin air.
That’s how we got death panels, it’ll become illegal to purchase private insurance, etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.
Free speech. Freedom to make shit up and speak it.
Great country ain’t it??? Wonder why those on the right hate it so.
Great News! I’m proud of my old state:)
Gosh, Old Fat Guy, I am sorry to inform you that the real world exists, but it actually does.
I posted the link in another thread a few days ago. I’ve posted it two or three times. Just Google “OECD” and you will see the report on their website. You can Google something can’t you??
The waiting time study was done after the Canadian government passed a law establishing the Wait Time Reduction Fund. I think you can Google that too if you are not too lazy.
Your 70% figure is false, and I am sure you know it.
Anyway, being overweight is no excuse for ignorance.
Please put down your bong and come back to the real world.
Here are some further facts Old Fat Boy:
MRI equip
Number of machines per million pop
UK 8.2
Canada 6.7
France 5.7
US 25.9
CT scanners per million pop
UK 7.6
Canada 12.7
France 10.3
US 34.3
Maybe one reason our health care is more effective and maybe a bit more expensive.
This is real world facts.
Here’s another example. World Health Organization ranks health among the countries. The left trumpets that the US is 37th. But, what does that really mean? A lot of factors go into health; proper eating, the amount of violence in society (not only those killed, but the pressure and anxiety it puts on everyone else), exercise, etc. Many factors not related to how our health care system handles those who need it. France, the #1 country has been widely known to have better eating habits among its people than the US for a long time.
The above all comes from the OECD website under
OECD health data, frequently requested data.
Now, here is another fact that might be near and dear to Old Fat Guys heart. Might explain why France ranked higher in the WHO survey.
% of population that is obese
France 10.3 %
US 33.4 %
Again, from the OECD study. As stated before, the OECD is a quite liberally oriented group which favors single payer systems. They are to the left of Obama.
You see, your leaders never tell you these facts. They tell you the WHO ranked us way behind France, and imply the French health care system is better. The ranking and survery does not show that at all.
You won’t find Obama saying that maybe the French nation ranks higher because we have three times as high a rate of obesity. No, he won’t mention that.
More numbers pulled out of your ass with no link to back it up??
Gee, I can do that too.
Let’s see.
Average IQ of Republicans is 73. Did you know that!!!!! SEVENTY-FRICKING THREE!!! Wow.
I was shocked. I really thought it was lower.
Oh, and the amount of money insurance companies receive in premiums but don’t pay in health care is in the BILLIONS. BILLIONS annually.
That’s right, every one of those billions of dollars is spent for zero health care, nada, zip, zilch. In fact, I’d bet it’s on the order of oh, about 3 thousand billion per year.
Meanwhile, that evil, socialist, government run Medicare spends 97% of it’s revenues on actual health care. Wow, and I didn’t even make that one up! ! ! !
Gee, I guess I can see where making shit up would be fun for awhile, but I would think it would get old pretty quick. Well, maybe not for those with IQ’s below 100. Guess they’re easily entertained.
Have a great day! ! ! ! Don’t let any of those mean ole’ dirty libruls ruin your fun with actual facts now, you here!
