We’ve got 65 members who have said they will not vote for any health care bill that does not have a public option. There are over a hundred members of Congress who are in districts that have a 10 point Democratic advantage — it should be all of them.
How do we get there, and how do we make sure that the 65 who have signed know that they have the support of the people in their district for taking a hard line on the public plan?
By passing resolutions at the local level demanding that they do.
If you’re a member of a local DFA group, a Democratic club, a Drinking Liberally or any other local organization, we’d like to have you pass the resolution demanding the inclusion of a strong public option in any final health care bill. You can find the language and sign on here. And you can also sign on as an individual.
We’ve got the momentum going. Let’s keep ratcheting it up.

About FDL Action
No problem, Jane, we’re on it. I’m the organizer for the local DFA group, an executive officer of two different Dem orgs and an active member of the local party, can ask that this is brought up at each group. Already had one of my activist friends email me about this, too!
For those of you who are new to local activism but want to get started for this cause:
– Go to Democrats.org, click on the Local button at top center and see if you can find the local county/city-town party group, find out when their next meeting will be.
– Go to DemocracyForAmerica.com, click on Community below header and look for groups or events in your area. (Please consider setting up an account with My DFA, too!)
– Go to Meetup.com and look for progressive activist groups in your area; there may be more than Democratic Party or DFA groups, like Green Party and other organizations which may be willing to entertain a resolution.
Be sure to check Facebook, too, to see if there’s a group near you.
And maybe if you get active locally, you’ll find another FDL community member like yourself.
Been involved here for some time but a bit of good news. Today the right leaning Denver Post published an editorial endorsing the PO
I added some emphasis to the statement.
Two groups checked off list, working on next two. Race you guys…
edit: foothillsmike, you should add that to your resolution, another whereas inserted before the Resolved graf –
“WHEREAS, the Denver Post published an editorial endorsing the Public Option on Aug. 25, 2009;”
and add any other Colorado-based media and organizations which have endorsed the PO.
Yeah Rayne!
I’m pretty excited about this. I think it’s a pretty cool move and happy to be working with DFA and Credo on it, they’ve been great.
put jane harman down as NO OPTION, NO VOTE.

Thanks Jane ,keep up the fight !
I wish I could devote more of my time to this most important issue, but my work schedules pretty hectic .
I’ve managed to get out E-mails to my Congress People ,got a form letter in return !
Thanks Jane !
Can you say cut your nose off in spite of your face?
I agree that we are making progress… so what’s with Feingold running up the white flag?

In short- says there will be no bill before December… if ever!
It’s really nice to connect the virtual activist world to the shoe-leather-hits-pavement world like this. Sometimes it’s challenging for bloggers to get their non-blogger brethren on the same page, and this resolution does just that.
Three groups down, one more to go.
By the way, folks, you can also make it easier and faster for your groups to submit this approved resolution to members of Congress by having their fax numbers ready and available when you submit the resolution.
You can find the fax numbers at this link, both the DC numbers and the local district office numbers. You can also look them up at Congress.org.
Don’t rely on email or snail mail since there is a ton of email to go through and snail mail takes forever to go through security screening. Fax is fastest and you generally have a receipt when it goes through.
And if you’re really, REALLY good, you might even call the district office and see if you can get a representative or an actual member of Congress to show up at the next event when the resolution is approved. I’m going to call a couple of offices as soon as I get done with the fourth group on my list.
update Letter recieved today from my State Rep D Richard Neal would appear that he supports a public option
‘which will operate on a level field with private insurers…………….This will check rising costs and force honesty in the industry”
Sounds like he’s on our side !
@ footjillsmike: Did you see how our Dem HQ had all the windows smashed last night?
New Mexico is all over this. We have a State Central Committee meeting on Sept. 12 and will def. pass PO resolutions.
My congressman is a Blue Dog. Have tried to influence his vote by letters to the editor in our local paper..this is a small county though…its going to be up to others in the more populated areas of the district to really put the pressure on him..He is Mike Thompson D…was one of the Blue Dogs that helped water down the Public Option.
Hope someone from Napa and Ukiah reads this and takes action.
Sorry to just blurt this question out here, but I put up that thermometer widget at my blog the other day. Now, I don’t see it here anymore. Has that campaign been abandoned? Contributions are happening more slowly now, but the total is still increasing. In fact, it just went over $400k.
every time I watch one of those videos, I’m extremely impressed with the excellence of the camera work — its not easy keeping people in frame when their walking (and you don’t know what they’re gonna do next…)
So here’s a shout out to Mike Stark’s cameraperson!!!
The Democratic Party of Oregon will vote on a strong Health Care resolution on 9/20 at the regular meeting of the State Central Committee. County parties and Congressional District committees are also working on passing resolutions, even if not the same text that is being pushed at FDL.
The base of the party is strongly for the Public Option and in their heart really want to see Single Payer. The problem will be convincing our congresscritters to follow the wishes of their constituents.
One interesting grassroots effort originating in Oregon is the Mad As Hell Doctors group (www.madashelldoctors.com). They will be sending a Care-A-Van across the country beginning 9/8 and plan to stop in 26 cities along the way. For more info, check out their website.
