Several months ago, I helped persuade encourage Jerry Nadler to take the whip count pledge. So I’m particularly thrilled to see that’s he’s standing firm as iron these days. From the way he’s talking, he’s a changed man–delighted he took the pledge, and knowing full well the critical nature of the pledge project.
And for anyone with lingering doubts that the path to securing the public option runs right through the House, Nadler’s resolve is what the Whip Count Project is all about.
Nadler was interviewed the other day by PolitickerNY, a local New York newspaper about the public option. Here’s some of what he said.
Thanks to our hard work and fierce push back, Nadler is feeling much more optimistic:
But now a key Congressional backer of the public option believes his side may have regained some momentum.
“I’m probably a little more optimistic than a couple of days ago, because of the strength of the pushback,” Representative Jerry Nadler told me in an interview yesterday.
A Senate bill with no public option won’t pass the House:
At the time, Nadler and his colleagues were upset at a Pelosi-backed compromise with conservative Democrats that watered down the public option in the House version of health care legislation. But last weekend’s developments suggested that the White House was ready to go one step further and junk the public option altogether.
That sparked a vocal backlash from Nadler and his allies.
“If they try to get a bill through the Senate with 60 votes without a public option, it won’t pass the House,” he said. “We will make sure it doesn’t pass the House.”
Drawing a line in the damn sand (also known as voting no against any bill without a public option):
“We’ve got to draw the line somewhere,” he added. “And this is where we’re drawing it. And we have to draw it here. We probably should have drawn it a little closer in.”
So what happens, I asked Nadler, if the House is ultimately presented with a bill with a cop-op provision instead of a public option—and if the White House and House leadership then tell progressives that it was the best they could do and that if it fails, the Obama presidency might be sunk?
“They can’t allow it to come to that situation, because I’ll vote no,” he replied. “They cannot allow it to get there, and that’s what we’re telling them now. If it comes to that, enough members, I think, will vote no. And they certainly don’t want to test that.”
Got that, Donna? Got that, Rahm? Got that, Max? Got that, Kent? Got that, Harry? Got that, Mr. President?

It’s so nice to see Dems with backbones. Maybe it will catch on.
From your mouth to God’s ear!
I think Nadler could learn a thing or two about backbone from my hero
Joe Lieberman, who is bravely resisting the pressure to insure the uninsured.
Oh that’s very cute, allan.
That’s a big disappointment. In the past I have found Edwards to be one of the most honest members of Congress. Let’s hope this isn’t a sign that others are slipping and just not saying anything about it yet.
President Obama needs to get his head together and step up to the plate on this quickly. We can all blame Rahm all we want, and I do too, but he is doing the president’s bidding. It’s easier and more productive to influence Obama than Rahm.

Harry’s got it…wait…wait…no, he doesn’t. A Republic glanced at him sternly.
Jerry Nadler does seem to understand how a Democrat from a strongly progressive/Democratic district should respond to things
Maybe he can give spine/gumption/cojones transfusions to his fellow Congress Critters.
Obama’s wishes have been stovepiped to Baucus via non-lobbyist and Oval Office frequenter Tom Daschle. We’ve been punked, but good.
Sebelius? Bright shiny object for our misdirected anger. Daschle’s still the point man, always has been.
Glad to see Nadler leading the way on this issue.

I’d suggest for all those equivocating from the “pledge” be stripped from the Act Blue listing asap including Edwards. The Unions making the same representation would be helpful too.
I note Act Blue contributed in excess of $500k to Congresswoman Edwards’ campaign. I, for one, don’t want to offer her or others like her a dime.
“Change?” More like politics as usual.
If he wanted to, Nadler could unseat Gillibrand in a primary, and should be able to win the Senate seat. I wish he would; unfortunately, IIRC he has said that he’d prefer to remain in the House (where he has massive seniority). What a shame; he’s be a GREAT Senator.
What about a march on Washington — getting the health insurance reform we want is worth it.
I hope Rep. Nadler sticks to this. I think his response, if it comes down to it and they are claiming “the Obama presidency will be sunk if you don’t vote for this shit bill” should be along the lines of “not my problem. I vote the interests of my constituents, not the Executive.”
And I echo JasperJohns’ sentiment above. I absolutely do not want a dime of my money going to anyone who will equivocate on this issue. If you have our back, we’ve got yours. If not, well…
Why anyone is still trying to shape the outcome of the health-care debate – or any other question for that matter, Af/Pak war, torture, bailouts, you name it – by calls, faxes or phone calls to congressmen, simply paralyses the mind. If you’re looking for an effective methodology of dealing with these lice, look to the tactics of the brownshirts:

All of this has the feel of early 1930s Germany. An economic crisis has occured, the Nazis have stolen a march on the left and, slowly but surely, succeed in reducing it to a mass of blubering jelly!
You people think and act as though you still have a functioning democracy! The financial, arms, drug and Middle East foreign policy lobbies and the collusive filth in Congress and the White House have stolen it from you. Why are you fiddling around with people like Nadler? Your vote has absolutely no meaning whatsoever. Join with the brownshirts and take down this whole charade, then look to extra-parliamentary remedies for the future.

Well said, Congressman Nadler. Thank you!
And to you, too, Eve, for your herculean efforts on behalf of those of us in Rep. Nadler’s district.
