Now, as if on cue, some of the Blue Dog Democrats are picking up on Steny Hoyer’s message about the public option "having to go" for the passage of the bill in the House of Representatives. Rep. Jason Altmire, who’s one of the leading Blue Dog Democrats in the House, just said:
The House’s healthcare reform bill will have to be changed before it can even win a majority among Democrats, one centrist, Blue Dog Democrat insisted Friday.
Rep. Jason Altmire (D-Pa.), who opposed the health bill on the Ways and Means committee, signaled that Democrats may not even have the votes to force through a preliminary health bill without any Republican support.
"And in order to get a majority even among the Democratic Party, we’re going to have to change the way that House bill is formatted right now," Altmire said during an appearance on Fox News.
Those words come after liberal Democrats strongly signaled to President Obama earlier this week that a publicly available health plan would be essential to winning their votes. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Thursday that she wouldn’t be able to pass a bill without a public option.
For Rep. Altmire, that means getting rid of the public option, or else the rest of his Blue Dog Caucus will threaten to block the passage of health care reform in the House. When Members of Congress come back from recess, the Blue Dog Caucus will likely throw a ruckus, threaten to block the passage of legislation unless the public option is stripped out, and then it’s up to the Democratic leadership and the White House on whether to accommodate the Blue Dog Democrats.
I think his threat isn’t real, but it depends on whether our progressives in the House will stand together as a voting bloc to refuse to support the passage of health care reform without a public option in the final bill. So, please keep up with the donations and the phone calls to our Progressive members of Congress to stand firm on the public option!

About FDL Action
Steny and Rahm, birds of a feather. Time for some phone calls!
Question… We donate to the “carrot” fund and what’s keeping those who make the pledge to do a bait and switch still being rewarded? The Hill surely suggested there were many looking to back off during conference and Stoyer validates this.
Frankly, I’m skeptical of any Democratic at this time. The messages coming from Washington are all so contradictory. There is NO leadership and the floundering is pronounced.
a belated Welcome to ya
did The Hill name any names or sources for names ? bet not
The Hill is a reliable organ for Leadership Spin – in this case no doubt some Hoyer staffer –
they tried this the other day and Rep Grijalva smacked it down, they started up again and Speaker Pelosi smacked it down – hard
plus they are Beltway CW junkies – who sometimes print shit just to make it so
me too. think Rahm, Steny, et al weren’t counting on us getting in when we did and then doing what we have done to date – they have never been challenged like this
just got off the phone with his DC staff – politely showed them the ‘carrot’ and asked them to imagine the depth, breadth, and passion of our ’stick’ :D
Well I did speak directly to and did exchange emails with Congresswoman Edwards’ office as she was specifically referred to. They were caught off guard by the article and said she’d been misquoted. They’d have a statement out refuting the suggestion and post it on their web site. I have yet to see it.
I stand by my assertion. Perhaps, I’m cynical and the “hope” is wearing off?
Speaker Pelosi one thing one day and then the leader another the next day. They, the Democrats, look damned foolish.
and thank you for the belated welcome :)
One wonders if the Speaker and the Majority Leader are even on speaking terms anymore. This is horrible.
Remember who is owned and who is free to vote for the public option.
The Democratic party seems to be hell bent to destroy itself to protect insurance company profits.
So be it.
From the ashes, we will build it anew.
The AFL-CIO is sick of getting it from people they supported.
If Labor walks from blue dogs, what will they have?
Oh cbl2, these folks deserve one of your more “classic” comments/characterizations.
That’s a good question. Can we be assured that any congressperson who breaks the pledge NOT get anything from the carrot fund?
