Does anyone think Bill Clinton had any intention of addressing Don’t-Ask-Don’t-Tell and the Defense of Marriage Act during his keynote speech in Pittsburgh at Netroots Nation 2009?
I don’t.
Congratulations to (non-heckler) progressive gay activist and blogger Lane Hudson, who put the former President on the spot — and then got blamed by a finger-pointing Bill Clinton for not having gotten enough support in Congress for lifting the gay ban.

About FDL Action
This was the biggest singular failure of the Clinton presidency. During the campaign in ’92, he promised to allow gays to serve in the military. Then he got ROLLED by the Republicans. From that moment on, the Repubs knew they could make Clinton cave by just shouting louder.
Let’s hope Obama learns a lesson from this.
Hey, some good news!
Conrad Spokesman Denies Earlier Report

Conrad’s spokesperson says he wasn’t speaking out against the public option.
I sometimes fear that the Obama team has learned all the wrong lessons from the Clinton presidency.
I am upset with the progressive movement of the Democratic party because you don’t support our President enough and this will ultimately hurt the agenda that we all support. No matter what he proposes Obama still must get his legislation through Congress and they can be very conservative at times because most of them pander to the middle Independent voters. We need to support the President and the Democratic Congress completely (even the Blue Dogs) because the alternative will be a failure to get things passed and then we will loose seats in the Congress and Governorships across the country. Please stop finding fault with everything Obama does – it is hurting the Democratic Party and pumping up the Republicans.
I must respectfully disagree. We are not ditto heads from the left. We are pushing a progressive perspective and when that means calling the president or his administration on things we consider BS, we are going to do so.
Which also means, we call out the BlueDog Representatives and ConservaDem Senators as well. We do NOT reward people for putting a D next to their name while they vote more frequently for the Rs and the corporations.
As a supporter of repealing DOMA and getting rid of DADT, as someone who’s always supporting the causes of the GLBT community and as someone who was watching the event from afar (on TV), I thought Lane Hudson made an ass of himself, and so did everyone else who was yelling out while Clinton was talking.
The support is there. It’s widespread. The battle is won. It’s a matter of timing now. I have no idea why Obama is dragging his feet on it. But the battle is essentially won and to scream and yell at Bill Clinton about it now is foolish, at best. It may even be damaging to related causes.
Lane has done some really good things for progressives, and maybe Lane feels better now that he’s yelled at a former president during a speech and gotten his attention, but he and his friends aren’t helping their cause by doing shit like that. What do you want from Clinton? Blood? How many times does he have to explain the situation and say that he supports overturning it?
The battle is won, man, now pressure your current president to do something about it.
Agreed. I was there, and I could really have done without the purity trolling. And, as Darcy Burner said in her closing keynote, Clinton was 100% right to point the finger.
