It’s great that Rep. Clarke signed on to the letter pledging to oppose the health care bill if the Blue Dogs (who were holding the health care bill hostage) got everything they wanted. It was not so great when they backed down three days later — and the Blue Dogs got everything they wanted.
Rep. Clarke signed the 2007 letter saying she would not vote for any war funding that did not include troop withdrawal. She voted "no" on the war supplemental the first time it went through the House this year. She signed Maxine Waters’ letter saying that the IMF funding subsequently added to the supplemental "precluded the possibility of House legislation."
Her name appeared on internal whip lists as someone who pledged to her colleagues that she would vote against the supplemental when it had to be confirmed after conference. And then the arm twisting started.
Rep. Clarke voted FOR on the supplemental.
So you can see why it’s wise to take treat these group pledges with some skepticism, because the members of Congress themselves don’t seem to feel themselves bound by them. When they go on the record to their constituents about how they plan to vote, it makes it a lot harder to backpeddle.
Yvette Clarke doesn’t have any health care events planned so far for recess (though she does have a golf tournament fundraiser). She comes awfully close to taking the pledge on the WNYC with Amy Eddings today, saying she wouldn’t vote for a "watered down" version. It would be good to know exactly what "watered down" means — will she vote for co-ops, or triggers, or giveaways to PhRMA because the White House doesn’t want to be 13-1?

Well, that’s more than I was ever able to get out of her. Clarke’s my congresswoman, and (despite my views on the adequacy of the whip pledge criteria) I dutifully hammered her office, in particular, her Senior Legislative Counsel, for several weeks on the whip pledge before giving up.
GM complains about the high cost of health care driving up unit auto costs. Would not making the US system single payer (the most efficient), help domestic companies compete in the global marketplace?
I went to a meeting last night and after listening to the most vocal, must state that mental healthcare seems sadly unavailable from Medicare.
As Ralphbon noted, Chuck Schumer went out on a limb claiming what he considered acceptable well beyond anything being contemplated even here at FDL. No one in the press has gotten up on his or her hind legs to ask the senator what he meant by his statements, exactly. There’s a pattern of misdirection emerging.
E-Mail Reveals Rove’s Key Role in ’06 Dismissals
It may shock you to learn that Emptywheel has been all over this :)
Morning Jane
I used to be logged in automatically…new policy?
Does the Rove DOJ firing letter have legs?
Thank you…sorry nothing shocks me since the elections and Bushco crime regime. This was in the NYT this morning. Glad Marcy is on it. Will Obama start looking backward now? Seems like a statement from the WH is appropriate. Time to stop coddling crooks.
Since we support Single Payer, Chuck Schumer must want to nationalize the hospitals.
News to me.
The US is a selfish nation. You don’t get traction for aid to the downtrodden. Aid for bankers is another matter. The health care debate should be framed as good for individuals with health care. It makes our industry more competitive; makes jobs more secure; reduces health care premiums with no sacrifice in quality of service. You get the idea. Helping the 50 million presently uninsured won’t do it.
Link to TPM on US Chamber of Commerce targeting states to kill public option.
Here is my local Milwaukee info on the chamber’s view of health care.
Health Care: Containing Costs and Preserving Quality
Nowhere are rising health care costs a more pressing concern than in metropolitan Milwaukee. Unchecked increases are eating away at companies’ bottom lines and workers’ paychecks. There’s no magic pill for this problem, but MMAC believes we as business leaders can and must act to ease the burden. An important first step is to empower employers and their employees with information that helps them (bold face mine)reduce health care needs while becoming smarter health care consumers. To that end, this website serves as a conduit to useful information.
So, I was wondering if anyone would suggest a “pushback” strategy directed at the businesses who are chamber members? I would like to know how a business could be swayed to disown the chambers anti public option tactics in the same way several doctor’s denounced the AMA’s initial position. Any thoughts?
Sorry the TPM link did not post.

“…though she does have a golf tournament fundraiser…”
I can only wonder who might be the major sponsors of that thing…
At our Milwaukee town hall meeting yesterday with Gwen Moore there was a significant AFL_CIO presence. They seem to be very organized here in Milwaukee on the health care battlefront.
I’ve always heard that a lot of business deals happen while people are playing golf. Nice to know something happens somewhere, though.
It’s news to me that FDL supports single-payer outright. Schumer was effectively articulating same, but never came out and said as much, leaving ambiguity in its stead — which was the point of mentioning it here.
I can only wonder who might be the major sponsors of that thing…
yeah – I was wondering that too, as well as whether there is a sufficient number of duffers like me, who are truly dangerous with a golf club in their hands.
hey – anywhere within 300 yards, in any given direction, and I might hit *anybody*.
which could require medical attention….
Very good thought.
I’d start by getting a list of companies who are prominent in the local Chamber, and who depend on good public opinion for their business.
Frequently they use groups like the Chamber as a buffer for things that wouldn’t be popular but help them financially. If any of them have had issues with providing health care for their employees, try and find that. Also, look and see how many people in the district don’t have health insurance (Pelosi released that list district-by-district a short time ago).
Have to leave for the airport for NN but will keep thinking. Who is your Rep?
Nationalize the hospitals? OK here comes the next Freedom Watch talking point the MSM will blast out across the country.
“Opponents of reform are now saying Obama’s health care plan will nationalize the US hospital system”.
“Here’s Wolf with the story.”
Geebus…. the well of BS is totally bottomless on this fight.
Well everyone catches up with the news at some point.
Hope you have a fun and productive time at NN. Looking forward to reports from you and Christy. Stay away from the fake neck bracers, unless you have your Jane Cam. *g*
Jane? My Rep is Gwen Moore. I am going to contact the local AFL-CIO about a response to the local chamber members. Thanks. Have a good time at Netroots.
Yup.
I see.
Thanks Jane
Will call.
Rallied some of the folks in our area who know more about single payer than any body I know to have a meeting with Senator Voinovich (they think he is a lost cause, but I did my best to convince that I think there is an opening) not for single payer by the public option. We can dream
Keep wondering why the “me first…proud to be a member of the mob, screamer” folks are not hauled out of these town hall meetings when they disrupt.
Hell even the Code Pinkers know that if they verbally interrupt a hearing etc their asses are hauled out. If they resist being hauled out they are arrested. Not sure why the same rules do not apply to the “mobsters”
You know warn with a sign posted, announce at the beginning of the meeting and follow through. The only person I have seen hauled out of one of these meetings was a black woman by some white male cops.
What gives? Have not seen one of the big white guys hauled out when they disrupt of make a scene
Anybody else get the feeling that some of the folks in those town hall meetings go practice with the white militias

yeah, with support like that, I can’t blame you for being surprised. Well, pragmatism is as pragmatism does, I suppose.
sorry only time for a v quick drive by…
i’m not going to look a gift horse in the mouth (or whatever the saying is). instead, i will say a very very sincere “thank you” to jane and also “more please” while i’m at it.
p.s. i missed to replying to you, alank, in ralphbon’s diary (the comments are now closed). but did leave a quick note, hoping you would see it, here.
Hope you are doing well Selise miss your post
A referendum on single payer health care insurance. If you support single payer sign these

It would be good to know exactly what “watered down” means…agreed. I’d also like a definition of “strong” and “robust”.
thanks! (((leen)))
