Howie Klein says it’s about two hours before Adam Schiff is set to get to the Alhambra town hall tonight, and the crowd is about equally split between pro- and anti- reformers:"yes we can" shouting at "no you can’t." Slightly more pro-health care reform folks.
The wingers are more organized, yelling "Freedom yes, Obamacare no." A couple of guys with bullhorns.
He says the pro-health care side is doing 10 different chants all at the same time. "The left seems disorganized but much bigger — the right seems smaller but very organized. They have all their talking points down. If you say something that goes outside their talking points, they get really, really angry"
Howie says that there are fake neck braces everywhere. Howie went up to one to talk to one woman wearing one — "they don’t want any kind of questions that go out of their comfort zone. And they only answer in exact memorized points. And they all totally think that their vision of the world is it. Then way off on the side are the LaRouche people, who are just running around with pictures of Obama dressed as Hitler and yelling something about FDR. They looked dangerous."
There are a lot of police walking around as a deterrent, but it doesn’t look like a dangerous crowd. Mostly an older crowd, 60 or over. Was originally supposed to be in the library, but there’s probably over 2000 people so they had to move it to the square. If they keep coming at this rate, Howie says there won’t be enough room.
OFA sent a flyer that people could print: "Standing together for health care reform." The right wingers have flyers that are made to look like they are hand made, but they are obviously manufactured.
Howie will have pictures of neck braces and more coming up at DownWithTyranny.

About FDL Action
I was there with my son from about 5:30 to 6:30. ! took a few photos with my phone, talked to some people, did some yelling.
The wingnutty ”Freedom Yes! Healthcare No!” is absurd, when you think about it – they don’t want healthcare? And easily countered by just chanting ”Healthcare yes!” ”Healthcare now!” and ”Freedom yes! Healthcare yes!”, these all quickly caught on.
OFA was there, in the shape of Patrick, who I spoke to last week. I’ve uploaded my small number of photos on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/album……77826f6781 (linky wixget not working for me, sorry).
I’ve got a new diary up on dkos that people here might be interested in:
We Need to *Be The Change*. We Need Demonstrations and Protests
Jane, I feel obligated to tell you about this diary since I quoted you extensively. ;)
Oh yes – and what do the wingers mean when they claim that the United States isn’t a democracy, but a republic? Can someone tell me why they say this, and what it implies? Why do they want to undermine the democratic principle?
I was there and this was a win for us. Pro reformers outnumbered the nutters, who were mostly relegated to the rear corner and were unable to disrupt the event.
Most important, props to Congressman Schiff for firmly stating his continued support for a “robust public option” and that his view “represented the majority of his district.”
Now, let’s get Blue Dog Schiff to tell the Mike Ross BD faction to stop being jackasses and get this job done.
Odd that they would say that when the only possible justification for their tactics is the “grass-roots democracy” that they supposedly represent.
This cracks me up. But honestly, who wouldn’t have whiplash after following the progress of health care reform? lovely metaphor.
I don’t really get the point of the fake neckbraces.
Maybe I don’t get this because I’ve worn them a couple of times in my life for severe pain. *g*
I don’t get it either. I don’t get these people AGAINST healthcare reform showing up all in “need” of it (in wheelchairs, neckbraces, etc.) It’s ass-backwards. They should show up looking like Johnny Atlas or something, jumping rope and doing pullups and drinking V8. You know?
Sorry to hear you needed those neckbraces. Ouch.
Whew. Guess it isn’t so strange not to get this “tactic” – none of their points or beliefs make any sense, right?
Sympathy appreciated – the last injury was 25 years ago, thank goodness. Both were actual whiplash. (We long-necked people are really susceptible when rear-ended)
Just back from Howie’s place – wow. The same pattern, following their instructions – get up front, keep chanting, don’t allow anyone to speak at all.
Very interesting read.
