According to accounts from the Steve Cohen health care event in Memphis Tennessee, the teabaggers are showing up armed:
Steve Steffens at Left Wing Cracker: "Randy Wade is to be complimented as well; he arranged for security. There were actually idiots who brought guns (legally, it seems they had carry permits, but why did they feel they needed them?). Yes, you read that right, and Randy made them all check in with the Sheriff’s Deputies on hand.
Gordon G via FDL Event Tracker: "Beginning early in the proceedings many attendees who were clearly against health insurance reform began trying to speak (and shout) out of turn, at times chanting in unison. These bullying attempts were contained by the rest of the crowd, who variously applauded speakers supporting reform, demanded that hecklers behave, and engaged thugs one-on-one to keep the peace."
Steve Ross at vibinc: After the introductions, a line of about 8 Doctors formed to talk about healthcare reform. Many expressed concern about the “public option”. Cohen made no attempts to disagree with them or anything, but allowed them each to talk for a few minutes about both the problems and their concerns. This was not scripted or pre-planned. I really think, in the end, it was an effective strategy to keep the opposition off their game, and some good points were raised, though they were difficult to hear and impossible to record due to all the mumbling and grumbling that was a constant at the event.
Tennessee Wisc Dem: The thing I wish Steve hadn’t done was ask any doctors present to speak first. Did he think doctors would be liberal? He thereby gave voice to every right-wing talking point you have heard. Several times he had to follow a doctor by saying "It’s not in the bill." I remember this especially with care for illegal aliens, but abortion and euthanasia both came up. The most prominent sign in the room was "don’t kill my GiGi." When Steve specifically said there was nothing in the bill to do this, and praised his family’s experience with hospice, he was roundly booed.
Here’s what I don’t understand — Cohen is in a D+18 PVI district. If the rest of the country wants a public plan by a 76% margin, his district has to be considerably more in favor of one than that.
Why is he front loading the meeting with anti-public plan "authority figures" if he intends to hold the line for what he says he believes in? It’s something I’d be doing if I knew I was going to take a bad vote.
If anyone has a report from a recess event, let us know in our event reporting tool.

About FDL Action
I wonder if the “authority figures” defused the teabaggers, though — they love their authority figures, and even if the doctors disagree with the public option, they probably do so more rationally than the screamers. Although it is amazing to think that actual doctors think that euthanasia is in the bill.
What are these people smoking?
Yeah it’s an odd choice — you think he’d be bringing in “authority figures” to reinforce his position, rather than feed the birthers.
They just aren’t reading it, only hearing the Palin talking points.
Just sent in another $50. There is a person on DKos who has a post up offering to kick-in $5 for every donation to FDL. nyceve has thanked him and some folks are kicking-in.
Because I am in Arizona I usually check out the AZ Republic website for local news and to see the comments made by local whackos of Phoenix. The Palin story on the health care reform bill be evil has a 2-to-1 comments disagreeing with her and disliking her. That sort of surprised me.
Oh lord…now they’re bringing in guns?
And I’m not really concerned about what happens at the meeting when guns are involved. It’s afterwards, when the crowd is still amped, that someone’s gonna go to their “great equalizer” and blood will flow.
O.T, sort of. someone needing a visit from Mike Stark:
R town hall turns birtht. ttp://briefingroom.thehill.com/2009/08/08/house-goper-cites-birther-claims-and-enemies-list-at-town-hall/ John Sullivan (R-Oklahoma).
I hope that those audience members at teh Sullivan event will vote for a more sane representative at the next election. I mean, what does any of that have to do with the issues at hand?
It stunned me when Randy announced that people who were carrying were allowed in.
Jane, most of the hecklers WERE NOT from the 9th District; Ross noted in his post that there were a LOT of license plates from Arkansas, Mississippi and the suburban collar counties, so these folks were NOT his constituents.
Steve held it together, and at one point he went right out in the middle of the hecklers to confront them; I was proud of him, he handled this well.
Umm, and I can’t believe he didn’t see this, it’s LeftWingCracker not Right.
Thanks for the link and the mention, btw
Wow. dude has some stones.
Cohen is hugely popular in Memphis which is now largely an AA city – he handily beat an AA. He’ll be okay.
Because he wants to convince the gun nuts they will get a chance to speak? After they get a chance if they don’t allow us to speak then security should axe them and a fair press should find no fault. Fair Press I know oxymoron but still our side was smart they had security.
Their side brought guns but turned them in at the door. Last thread we were talking about this the GOP might be acting reasonable the violence might have peaked to early.
Buddy Steve has a different electoral challenge this time. His internals are alarming him, I guess.
The problem with concealed carry and open carry laws is that, while they rationalize it with the spectre of a nut job shooting up a restaurant, is it makes it really easy for a person or persons who ARE those lunatic nutjobs to get into a public place to kill.
Guns? this is disheartening news. So many other places manages ot improve the level od discourse today.
What is GiGi?
This is a rather interesting Social Phenomena to witness. If the GOP does send a shooter Obama is going to have to get on TV immediately call for peace, police and FBI at every Town Hall and no more guns within a mile of these events. He should not cancel the Town Halls or they win but anyone who knows the Civil Rights Movement would know that.
People under adversity when told they can’t, often keep on doing what they are doing so I think the Town Hall numbers if anything will go up.
Its the same anti authority unintended result that police produce when they harass Dark People.
Are we seeing a mini, hurried, reenactment of the Civil Rights Movement?
I am not saying our side will win but the President is for it, the Media is subtly against it with a few exceptions on both sides KO and Rachel are out numbered by Rush, the entire Fox network, all the Righty bloggers etc.
Police are now being called in to protect our side from mobs being fed by the media and the rich.
It doesn’t matter if a nutjob is in a state with concealed carry or not, if they want to carry, they will. At least states with concealed carry laws put the doubt in the nutjob’s mind that he’s the *only* one carrying.
Also, not all states with carry laws allow carrying to public gatherings. If that meeting had been in GA, the ones who carried (or even had the weapons in their car) at the meeting would have been in violation.
Having them check in with the sheriff was smart. That meant that the event security and the sheriff knew who was carrying and those carrying knew that they knew. And whether they were from Cohen’s district or outsiders. That in itself calms things down. And it also defuses any local gun folks opposition to Cohen; he respected their second-amendment rights. Memo to other Democrats in Congress in similar situations.
The states that have succumbed to the carry-permit crowd have not degenerated into the Wild West, at least not yet. But they have not appreciably lowered crimes rates compared to other states either. And folks with a carry-permit generally are a little more level-headed than those who just on a whim grab their piece from the dresser drawer.
It’s really interesting how this has unfolded in the South. Republican Bob Inglis gets a little taste of teabagger manners when he tries to go through his slide presentatin about what’s wrong with the healthcare bill. Virginia Foxx is visited at her Mocksville event by folks advocating for healthcare reform AND the local chair of the Democratic Party. And now Cohen pulls off an event in which he could disabuse self-professed doctors, of all people, or their misinformation.
I think it is really is starting to go well; knock on wood.
I disagree Doctors are authority figures so by letting them speak and then saying its not in the bill he breaks down their authority on the issue.
Now I wish he could have said check Google and gotten everyone who was curious reading even if they only read a few pages it would make them PARTICIPATE more in the Process.
We want more people doing that.
I assume the GOPers are coordinating again and telling all their people to bring guns to these events? The GOP group mind has the group do everything the same. Since we are not causing violence or bringing guns the GOP call to bring guns is a hope for accidents to happen.
I would hope the FBI would do something about this.
The photo of the Doc in scrubs and coat is ridiculous. I wonder if he dresses this way to go to a restaurant or to meet his accountant. He dressed this way to be in “costume.” He may work in healthcare, but he doesn’t have any more experience dealing with his own insurance company or pharmacy than I do, and maybe even less than a lot of American families. These Docs, often are less informed than many consumers because they usually have expensive comprehensive insurance coverage and absolutely NO IDEA what drugs cost because they get free samples of everything. My own Doc doesn’t even have a clue about the side effects of most drugs because he gets all his info from his drug reps that have no medical training at all and only know what their employers tell them to pass along that printed in some biased glossy brochure.
I assume otherwise. I think they would avoid even the suggestion that they incited temperature-raising of that kind, hoping that it would happen organically. The nuts can be counted on to come to the worst solutions all by themselves.
Here is a great article debunking the myth of rationed health care.
http://progressnotcongress.org/?p=2445
Wearing the white coat is stupid. It makes him look like the guys on teevee where is says “Doctor Simulation
— I’m not a doctor, I just play one on television”
I suspect they carried weapons b/c they could; it’s another sign of defiance to Obama, since the Far Right’s always claimed, “Obama’s gonna take our guns.” Regardless of that, though, the bullying intent behind bringing guns to a public mtg like this is obvious. God, I hate bullies above all things. These people don’t just want to be heard; they want to be catered to & obeyed. Their (misplaced) sense of rage makes them such handy tools for Big Pharma & the other usual suspects.
The tactics folks used here to maintain even moderate order were sadly glossed over in this article though. Whatever they did, we should bottle it. Does anyone know more details, or have a link to more? I linked this on Twitter & I’d love to know more. I’m hardcorps80204 @ yahoo dot com, or @hardcorps80204 if you Tweet. Thanks all!
Two things:
I know everyone wants to get hung up on the gun thing, and it was a little unnerving at the time of the announcement, but in TN guns are everywhere whether you know it/believe it, or not. Anyone showing up today not expecting someone in the hall to be carrying is blind to our reality. That said, the announcement was made, people complied (I assume) and nothing else came of it, thank God.
The second thing, and I’m thinking about this from a purely political perspective, based on my knowledge of Cohen and TN09. Yes, he took a big chance trotting those Docs up in front of everyone, sight unseen, but it payed off. Only two really spouted BS talking points. The rest talked about their practice and how things are tough for them, and how they want the best for their patients. They expressed misgivings about the “public option”, but for these people we now have a benchmark for education. Their misgivings weren’t ideological, they were common fears expressed by doctors and patients alike who need information. Isn’t that what a town hall is all about?
In the end we won the Town Hall because the Congressman remained in charge, even when the crowd got unwieldy. We allowed dissenting views to speak, and our Congressman smacked down the most nutty of the nutty ones, then talked genuinely to his constituents about his ideas of reform (which revolve around single payer/public option). We won because while it was noisy and annoying at times, Cohen stood his ground and spoke to his constituents.
I think we need to get on the MSM and say Bush had preselected crowds because he was worried about Code Pink who while annoying never brought any weapons let alone guns.
The GOP is bringing guns because they are worried about unarmed protesters?
This makes them look weak, This makes them look like bullies. This does suggest they are hoping violence results.
Only by reading the GOP blogs and listening/ watching their media can we be sure we have people on that. We should check in with them.
Hmmm maybe we should get the names of these Doctors and check to see if they really are Doctors? I would not put it past the GOP to send in Ringers.
emptywheel jumps to the top!
Gonzales and Bush Haven’t Spoken
Great news from on the ground:) Now if we could get the MSM to cover this and what the meeting discussed last thread Things Would be Perfect!
(Had to do the cheezy pun on my Call Sign:)
Teabaggers bring guns
So quick to jump to collisions.Who knows
who they are. Did anyone ask them? Are you
a teabagger?
If you were talking about a no-concealed carry state, you would be right. But the observation that they brought guns because in Tennessee they could means that they coming expecting their guns to be taken away or them not admitted to the meeting just because it was a Democratic Congressman. Having to talk to the sheriff as they went in was smart in this context. In a no-concealed carry state, they would not be likely to talk to the sheriff and consequently not identified.
Tennessee has been infested with know-nothings forever. Remember that the Klan started in Pulaski, TN. Until recently, the people were somewhat more reasonable than their whack-job kin in the rest of the South, but lately the repub sickness has infected the rural population. That group has always had a disproportionate representation in the legislature, and now the real crazies are showing their colors.
We have a law permitting people to carry concealed weapons almost everywhere, including bars (unless they post signs), and parks (unless the municipality opts out). The opt-out bill passed second reading in Nashville 23-14.
Amazing. That wouldn’t have happened a few years ago. The laws wouldn’t have gotten out of committee.
Are the unruly people at these meetings hired by the lobbyist like they hire them to wait in line to get in Senate and House hearings?
Maybe the security at these public events should ask to see voting registeration cards?
We think some are hired yes.
Here’s a good point I rarely see adressed. It’s called You Do Not Have Health Insurance. And it pretty much explains why you see so many elderly folks in these mobs: they got theirs, and fuck the rest of us.

Things are getting nuts!
One of my fears are that some Good Ol’ Boy who is not happy with a black president, a ‘liberal’ government and DFHs daring to speak-up/push-back, will decide/be pushed that someone/He needs show what being a ‘true american’ is and prove that a gun really is louder/stronger than any voice.
I love Rachel Maddows for her strength, her honesty and her comfort in her own skin, but if some nutter’ wanted to make a point(claim glory/make Bejebus proud of him), then she would make the list. She is a woman(bitch/whore), informed (mouthy), strong (needs sorting-out) and a openly lesbian Media voice(sinner/corrupter of weaker minds). * (Nutter translation)
I may read too much and watch too many police type TV shows, but these people scare me and they are very capable of causing great harm..
I know I’m just over-tired and over- stressed, but, Rachel please take your own safety a little more seriously until sanity returns (or at least catches Her breath), if nothing else it would make me feel better..
Everybody who will claim to be a Doctor please raise your hand so you can speak first. If you were having chest pains, how confident would you be that they were real Doctors? They are spreading out in the crowd to make it look like everybody in in the crowd is angry, instead of a small group from out of town, many of them on the same bus. They are trying to fool peple.I would much rather they had let people who’s DL proves they are from the district come up front.
The healthcare lobby would love it if we start talking about guns. That would just split us, rather than bringing us together.
I realize this may end up sounding like a bold, new concept, he was trying to have a fair discussion rather than frontload the whole thing. Are we supposed to do the same thing we complain about when Republicans do it? I’ve had the good fortune of knowing Cohen for years. He wants to win because it is right, not because he didn’t allow the opposition to be heard.
Besides, frankly, one of the best ways to make conservatives look like bigger idiots to the undecideds out there is simply to allow them to speak unfettered.
The key to getting the MSM to cover this is to not bury the lede under the emotional response that guns (posibly) were at an event in a State with a heavy gun culture.
The wingers didn’t take over. That’s the lede. There was fairly civil discourse. That was the lede. There were lots of people there of dissenting opinions and no one got heated. That’s the lede.
Or my favorite: They brought out the best wingers they could find to disrupt the democratic process, and they were outsmarted by a short jew that they called a Nazi. THAT’S THE LEDE.
Agreed with folks above… in AR or TN etc.. it would only be noteworthy if guns were not present.
Why the hell is Cohen acting like a Blue Dog?
Take the damn pledge, Congressman! Or come here and explain yourself to your early supporters.
And that goes for your vote for the war spending too.
Jackie, Today’s NBCLosAngeles reminds everyone that we DFHs are actually the violent ones in this country.
“Manson Murders Showed Dark Side of Hippie Generation”
http://www.nbclosangeles.com/n…..99157.html
The second half of the article quotes someone at length who studied Manson and says he wasn’t a hippie. That doesn’t stop the headline writer. Great scary picture of Charlie, the face of our movement.
Cohen’s not acting like a Blue Dog. He’s not pulling a Mike Ross. He’s not being Max Bauccus. Come on, be serious.
He said at the meeting that he supports single payer/public option. As for the pledge…we’re working on it, but he’s not much of a joiner.
TBogg is upstairs!
The Creamed Corn Mafia also does not care for
your loud music and your slouchy pants
If you are for single payer.. a pledge to demand a robust public option (at minimum) should be very easy to do.
Is anyone terribly shocked?
Jane,
+18 doesn’t mean a whole lot against .45.
Of course he is gonna say anything to deflect the nutters from
stalking his family and checking his countertops.
I don’t know where we go from here, but I think I will do the
Banhoeffer thing.
C
I think that the meetings should be held in places where no firearms are allowed…for example, many States and municipalities have laws against carrying weapons on schoolgrounds, Universities, courthouses, public buildings, etc. Some laws restrict “packing” within l00 yards, so these folks shouldn’t even be in the area without receiving a citation.
Just shouting down others was not enough for the Paliban insurgents. Now they have to use guns to enforce their viewpoint? How can this be right? Wasilla trailer trash.
