Bob Filner of San Diego (CA-51) draws a line in the sand:
I have heard some compromises being put together which says we will not have a public plan unless there is a certain trigger, a trigger based on the number of people I guess insured and various costs involved. That is a recipe for no public option. We need the guarantee of accessibility on day one. Any trigger as far as I am concerned, kills my support for the bill.
We need to do this now. People say we are rushing it, we have been waiting since 1948 to take health care reform seriously. We cant afford much longer at this rate. We will have choice we will have coverage, we will have higher health for all Americans. So lets get the public health option, and I am not going to vote for any healthcare reform plan that does not include such a public option.
Thanks to Representative Filner, and great job by Democracy for America, who worked with him and got a great video. They have been wonderful partners on this project, really terrific to work with, and have helped tremendously. They’ve also done great work on the Ben Nelson front, and have vowed to continue, even when the White House telling liberal groups to stand down. That takes tremendous courage and integrity.
We’re adding Filner to our Health Care Heroes page. At a time when a lot of people are demoralized and are being told that the Blue Dogs are going to write this bill and that they are going to have to suck it up, Congressman Filner’s courage and leadership are inspirational. So please consider thanking him with a donation.

Keep going!!! 25 to go
Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-NY28) has a rec list diary on DailyKos right now. She is proposing having tele-town halls in order to bypass “the screamers”. I posted a comment asking her why she has not joined her colleagues in taking the pledge. If you feel the same way, consider engaging her (and/or her staffer) over at dkos.
You know, if we can all keep the pressure on even as other groups like OFA work to thwart the teabaggers, the long recess of August might actually wind up working in our favor. Keep it up, people!
I consider Filner my emeritus congressperson. Brian Bilbray (R-carpetbagger-lobbyist-Cunninghamptons) may have a problem riding the Illegal Alien gravy train next year….
It’s great that pledge-making didn’t take an August break. Congratulations, Congressman Filner, and welcome to the HealthCare Heroes team!
In Austin area, Doggett has more meeting set….
Excellent ! and proof that we need to keep at it (oh yeah I’m still calling)
Jane – amidst all the hubbub yesterday at the Mike Ross event, a veteran RN stood up and asked Ross to take The Pledge – you’re everywhere gal !
Way to grow, Jane. At the end of this, I hope you add your own name to the Heroes List.
Thank you Representative Filner; We will help you in the future as well!
Dr just called. Xrays show cancer in her stomach. I’ll be going to vet later this afternoon. Thanks for your support thru this.
Is holding teleconferences to bypass the screaming teabaggers really a good idea? It smacks of undemocratic exclusion, IMO. The critters do it to the left and they do it to the right. Never ok.
Honestly, talking about the insanity and violence of the raving lunatic fringe is the best way to defeat them.
Great point. Thanks for doing that.
I do not think the optics of having all the Democrats cancel their town hall meetings in response to astroturf hooligans is positive.
Where did you see that?
OTOH it just might make the people who want to hear a Congress critter and have REAL questions might get very angry that the meetings were cancelled because of crazy people. Might realize that there’s something they don’t want the public to know.
While we are at it can we ask some of the progressive reps to file a complaint against Rep. Todd Akin (R-MO).
He seems to think murder is funny especially if it is against Democratic representatives.
Those citizens who want answers to real questions are already more informed and most likely on the side of change. The marginally aware citizens who watch the evening news will probably only notice the the critters are “cowering”.
Remember how galling it was to have citizens ejected from Bush events? I say, add security to the town halls and let’s mock them to our hearts’ content. (Not defending the violent lunacy, just pointing out the perceptions.)
Just got off the phone with a staffer at my rep’s office – Brad Sherman. He isn’t scheduling a town hall meeting for Health Care for August. He just had a TH at the end of June. But, the staffer told me of two events he will be attending and will be available to speak with constituents. (In the San Fernando Valley – Valley Concerts at the Warner Center, August 16th & 30th. I plan on attending.
He has not taken a stand on which bill he supports, but in the past has supported Universal Health Care.
Just remember folks, these teabaggers are a minority – a lunatic fringe. We have the numbers on this, but we need to keep at it. Call your Rep and senators daily.
A phone call a day (or three) keeps the Coops away!
I don’t know, it’s awful easy for Rep. Filner to pledge support for a public health insurance option, from the safety of the fortified bunker…
But what if he finds himself out amongst the maddening crowd, like at a rally in his district, and some several shills planted in the crowd start hollering and shouting about communism or birth certificates or whatever…
Will he get ‘rattled’ in such a frightening situation as that?
I don’t know, it’s an awful lot to risk, I personally am frightened to death that someone might shout at me the things that rush limbaugh and sean hannity tell them to shout at me…
You might want to think twice about this dangerous issue, Rep. Filner.
These Rs are getting to be very dangerous. Notice the code words lately – code but still fairly overt. Like lynching.
Very significant to their thugs.
There’s more to this whole thing than “public option”. There is the fact that Obama is bought and paid for by Big Pharma so…he is agreeing to eliminate any provision for negotiating better drug prices for medicare and any other government-sponsored healthcare plan. He accepted money from Big Pharma and now he is trying to deliver the goods, and since most of Congress is bought and paid for by either insurance or Big Pharma, they too will fall in line.
Drug prices will continue to climb, totally borking any avenue for real savings in healthcare AND Big Pharma will continue to simply produce bullshit “me too” drugs with shiny new patents on them.
A lack of a public option AND lack of price negotiation for drugs must both be “a bridge too far” and bring down a “NO!” vote from the few true progressives in Congress.
Canceling meetings or holding them in private is a Terrible Idea. Abhorrent idea or alternative to keeping the scheduled meetings scheduled. A lot of people have gone to a lot of work to make those meetings productive. Productive even in spite of the hooligan factor. In fact, the hooligan factor has inspired even more determination in those who are organizing the meetings and in those who intend to attend the meetings.
I haven’t read Louise Slaughter’s proposal or the post at Kos. I guess I should now, but I am very suspect of her motives with that suggestion.
Oh and for a few points on why there is no real recovery starting or even possible.
Thank you Obama for mega-huge bank bailouts and continued coddling of Wall Street and finance! Thank you thank you thank you! This will help sink hopes of real healthcare reform too! Wahoo!
“Technical difficulties” can be ginned up to block out inconvenient questions or statements. Not possible in face-to-face.
mentioned in passing by a Beck fan at his site –
still trying to find ya video. putting hazmat suit back on
today’s word over at the anchor baby’s sewer: The New Black Panthers are coming !!!
good grief ! aaaaaaarrrrrrrrrggaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh
What is the truth to the story reported that only 4 percent of Americans would be engaging the public option portion of the health care reform (insurance company boondoggle) package?
Got link?
A guest on an MSNBC political show – a milquetoasty congressman – was flabbergasted b/c all this astroturfed feigned outrage generated by insurance co lobbyists – was all because 4 percent of Americans might be covered by the public option.
He continued to say that 96 percent of Americans will have private health insurance under the reform.
This sounded like a big sucking sound to me. I’m flabbergasted that this congressman was talking about a plan than only 4 percent of the public would be eligible for. Is this really the extent of our big D, big guns plan?
I want a public option that is viable.
As with everything else in this country, it all comes down to race. Racism is what the GOP uses to keep white working class males (especially Southern ones) from supporting unions and non-Pentagon government spending.
Here’s key Republican strategist Lee Atwater in 1981:
I’ve never heard of or seen that stat before. I’d think it more likely that 4% of Americans would at first opt for the public option, not that it’s only open to 4% of the population.
I saw it on Olbermann or Rachel. I’ll have to look for it. The gist of it is better explained at comment 30. I was hoping someone else here knew more about this congressman and the details of this 4 percent idea.
Sure sounds shitty. If a bill with that kind of weak tea makes it to the royal senate, the royals will render it totally non-functional.
I want one that small, medium and large corporations with deep pockets, those that are also being held up for highway robbery and virtually being driven to bankruptcy courts by insurance companies, have the option to join.
That’s a work of Atwater art. A symphonic piece that the R’s love. Karl Rove, Atwater redux. Satan’s spawn – both of them.
You know what’s really sick? Black Republican Pundits like Juan Williams and Michelle Berman (sp) and that poor silly cross-eyed fellow and Michael Steele.
Jane CNN had a nice clip about the Health Care Reform Rally today in D.C. wonder if Matthews, RAchel, Olbermann, Ed will cover this rally since they completely missed the Health Care Now last Thursday in D.C. They completely missed covering this rally because they were busy showing the same Obama Beer Summit clip hundreds of times over the evening
Matthews came out Monday and Tuesday as he was showing the “screamers” on his show and asked ‘where are the folks from the other side” Wonder if he will ignore the rally today? If last week is any indication he will keep his head up where the sun does not shine on the Pro health Care Reform rallies
yes, maybe 10million people is all. it is an insignificant little fig-leaf on a bad plan.

Bob Filner for years has been fighting to get legislation passed to provide monthly stpends to the families of WWII merchant marines.
Only recently were the merchant marines officially recognized as being considered part of the war effort.
Filner has been the lone voice in the wilderness for these aged survivors and their families.
He’s one of the good ones.
