If you got your information from the CBS News last night, you would believe that "angry protesters" are cropping up "everywhere Democrats are trying to defend health care reform." "Conservative websites" like Freedomworks are recruiting them, based on "real fear over the increased taxes" and "government control" of the health care system.
Max Pappas from Freedomworks shows up to speak on their behalf.
Freedomworks isn’t some "organic grassroots" outfit. It’s run by former Republican House Majority Leader Dick Armey – corporate lobbyist, global warming denier and ladie’s man. The President and CEO of Freedomworks is Matt Kibbee, who was trained by Lee Atwater. Kibbe was behind the attempt to get Ralph Nader put on the ballot in Oregon in 2004, prompting a complaint to the FEC of illegal collusion with the GOP.
Steve Forbes is on the FreedomWorks board. As Paul Krugman noted, their money comes from the Koch, Scaife, Bradley, Olin nexus, as well as other reliable funders of right wing infrastructure including Exxon Mobil.
Freedomworks has a long history of skunk works. In 2004, a woman who identified herself as a "single mother" in Iowa, Sandra Jacques, appeared at a George Bush town hall and gushed about his plan to privatize Social Security. She left out the part about being an employee of Freedomworks, who were lobbying on the issue at the time. ![]()
David Koch is also Chairman of the other major outfit heavily involved in these "organic" uprisings, Americans for Prosperity, whose members lynched Democrat Frank Kratovil in effigy. Koch is the 19th richest man in the world. They recently renamed the New York State Theater in Lincoln Center the David H. Koch Theater.
These aren’t just some organizations that these guys gave money to. They run them.
This extreme violent behavior is being organized and funded by those at the highest levels of the conservative infrastructure. It’s not some sideline, some quirky hobby. It is the function and purpose of these organizations to threaten and intimidate elected officials in order to subvert the will of the electorate to a corporate agenda.
As DDay says, "This is not about policy. It’s about incitement to violence."
The country overwhelmingly does not trust the private insurance industry. Even internal GOP polls show that 58% of Republicans support "creating a government run health insurance agency that will compete with private insurance companies," as do 76% of the American public.
According to the North Carolina Institute of Medicine, there are 52 million Americans currently without health insurance. We are a country in crisis. If the government cannot respond by delivering a public plan with a President who campaigned on creating one, a 60 vote Democratic majority in the Senate, a Speaker of the House who has committed to doing so and majority support in both parties among the public, then we do not live in a representative democracy any more. The country is ungovernable.
And that is in large part because organizations like CBS and the New York Times do not report the news when it is right in front of them. They pass off these transparent lobbyist funded thuggery as a grassroots effort. They do not say who is organizing these violent uprisings, or how they are being funded. These media outlets are playing a critical role by telling the country that its people believe something that they don’t. It is blatant propaganda being passed off as news, and it is to "journalism" what David H. Koch is to "grassroots."

when will they ever actually report reality & not Republican talking points? They must be pressured into it! Who do we write? I never get any response from the networks at all.
Freedomworks Brown Shirts brought to you by the Republican Party and their Corporate Owners to town halls across America.
want to know the REAL SICKNESS pervasive in this country…it is massive corruption fueled by greed….IT LOOKS INCURABLE to me
SERMON ON THE MOUNT might cure it
RENT A MOB………….kill democracy
ding.
Is Koch not also the brother-in-law of George H. W. Bush? His sister, Dorothy, is married to a Koch family member. I’m sure there’s more than one of them, though (more’s the pity).
they will offer ONLY the status quo
big pharma pill pushers underwrite KATIES,JOHNNYS,and Brians zillion dollar salaries,Les Moonass too
But, but … NPR assured me yesterday that the insurance industry
was supportive of reform … unless someone started criticizing their CEO salaries.

Ben Nelson Personally Calls Nebraskan Who Ripped Him In Health Care Ad
“To be real honest with you, I don’t know if he was just being aggressive or nervous but he just wanted to put out his position on the issue,” Snider recalled in an interview with the Huffington Post. “He said he supported the public option but one that wouldn’t affect the current plans of 200 million Americans.”
“I told him I didn’t understand. And he tried to explain it. He put his position out. He said if we went with a full public option — which he called a government plan — it would drive the price down and hurt private companies. I said, ‘you mean competition.’ And he replied that it would force people off the private plan and onto the government plan.”
“That happened twice,” Snider concluded. “He was telling me how bad a public option would be and when he was done I said, ‘So you don’t support a public option.’ He would reply, ‘That’s not what I say.’”
…
How many brain cells does Nelson have?!
Geez, I watched the vid again and Jane’s right. This is completely packaged b-roll, wrapped and tied up with a nice bow. All a “news” producer has to do is broadcast it.
Totally staged. notice you do not see the interviewer sitting across from the BSers. Totally effin’ staged.
Where’s the SDS when you need it…
How many times do we need to see examples that the corporate news outfits don’t do news – they do propaganda. END OF STORY.
Please keep shining a light on this racket. The PR function that 98% of BigMedia serves for its conglomerate owners is one of the most pressing (no pun intended) issues of our time. We gotta get more of the public to realize how the Big Game works.
(by the way, I think there’s a typo in the last sentence, since it’s David “H” Koch.)
This will backfire bigtime when people learn the truth. The healthcare lobby must be terrified to risk this. That this is being reported as legit news now will just make the backlash bigger when people learn they where fooled and who fooled them.
I don’t trust CBS news anyway. I watch CSPAN and Keith Olbermann and Olbermann brought this up. I suggest everyone call the FBI as this right wing Dick Armey and Freedumbworks wants to disrupt official government business. Also call the DNC and demand that they call the FBI on this matter.
Read my blog http://blog.democratz.org
Sorry…I got that wrong. Dorothy Koch, nee Bush, is Dubya’s sister.
Why do we know what’s going on with teabaggers and their tactics, and people like Kathy Sebelius don’t? Why aren’t they asking people to speak one at a time and asking people to leave or be escorted out if they don’t behave?
“As DDay says, ‘This is not about policy. It’s about incitement to violence.’”
I suppose it was only a matter of time before violence was threatened by these vested interests (as in, “if the GOP loses the election–on any level–there’ll be hell to pay”). And yet I wonder how it is that there are so few (any?) Republicans with the standing within their own party to bring an end to such things.
The party of family values, indeed.
YES YES YES
Dick Armey is a TRAITOR…pure and simple HIS PENSION NEEDS TO BE REVOKED
I hear ya. But to offer you a bit of hope, many repub voters are fed up with their party and becoming independent. I don’t have statistics, but lots of anecdotal evidence.
Right on, sister!!
Congressional pension is a pension made available to members of the United States Congress. Members who participated in the congressional pension system are vested after five (5) years of service. A full pension is available to Members 62 years of age with 5 years of service; 50 years or older with 20 years of service; or 25 years of service at any age. A reduced pension is available depending upon which of several different age/service options is chosen. If Members leave Congress before reaching retirement age, they may leave their contributions behind and receive a deferred pension later.[1] The current pension program, effective January 1987, is under the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS), which covers members and other federal employees whose federal employment began in 1984 or later.
YOU MY FRIENDS are PAYING Traitor Armeys PENSION and Cadillac healthcare
Can you imagine what the “liberal media” would be saying about the angry democrats trying to subvert democracy and the will of the people if it were dems pulling this kind of crap.
we do not live in a representative democracy any more.

Won’t even get into the various marital problems of the Kochs. Does being a Repub automatically mean you’re a hypocrite? Appears so…
amen, sadly, amen…if he won’t give us the same coverage as he has, perhaps he should lose his socialized coverage (for life)…another reason to hate texans…heh
Hey Keith…if you’re reading
Great special comment.
Unfortunately, I don’t think “The Mob” watches Keith. They would think he’s a commie, fascist, Islamist-loving and a racist….against white people. They do NOT want to be informed – it confuses them.
o/t kinda
I went to SF Chronicle and saw article on Pelosi and health care. All the comments that would be sympatico with what we are saying here are getting many many thumbs down ratings, much to my surprise.
Are other health care articles in home town papers being scrutinized in this way? I know, I got the tin foil on, but you know, it’s August and the Bay Area is pretty flipping liberal. The comments are consistent with the geography, it’s the thumbs down ratings that cause those comments to go to the basement when reading. Just wondering.
“when people learn they were fooled” is enormously optimistic. Who will tell them other than bloggers? “If” they learn is the question and the answer is “not very likely.”
Must be sad to be so easily confused. No wonder they’re so miserable all the time.
Did Rahm Emanuel not see this coming? If so, how did he prepare to expose it for what it is? That was a rhetorical question.
But really, if the Democrats really wanted to expose this, and if the Democratic leadership and all other House members, Senate members, Governors and so on wanted to hold successful public discussions about health care reform, just how incompetent are they to have not seen this coming and to have not adequately prepared for it?
Here is Jane Hamsher laying the truth of the story out on a silver platter for all to see who is responsible for this fraud and thuggery, but who in the Democratic leadership circles and the Democratic party rank and file are working to move this story along, and quicky?
Someguy. Nope. No backfire. Why? Because the sheeple will never hear the truth from network news. Nor from any other part of the MSM.
Face it. The news we get is not news. It is propaganda put out by the corporations that own congress and the media companies. No one out there has balls enough to say what Jon Stewert and Steven Colbert say every day. But they are only a basic cable channel. The sheeple are kept in ignorance, molded, aimed and fired off at whatever the corporate bosses decide. Watch for authoritarianism along with corporate greed to get the rethugs back in power. Democracy? Really? Try 21st century corporate fascism
Nelson is owned body and soul by the health industry corporations. He will never say or do anything other than what his owners want.
I read a great piece related To Koch Industries and one of their lobbyists involved in these “astro roots” hooligans and chicanery:
The Wonk Room
Tim Phillips, The Man Behind The ‘Americans For Prosperity’ Corporate Front Group Factory

Tim Phillips, The Man Behind The ‘Americans For Prosperity’ Corporate Front Group Factory
The rate at which the Koch Industries funded Americans for Prosperity (AFP) churns out front groups to promote its right-wing corporate agenda sets the organization out among similar conservative “think tanks.” This week, AFP created their latest front group called “Patients United Now,” an entity set up to defeat health care reform.
“We are people just like you” to give the site a grassroots feel, and then use the new group to recruit supporters and run deceptive advertisements attacking reform. This “astroturfing” model has been used by AFP to launch groups pushing distortions against other progressive priorities.
Notably, AFP was also instrumental in orchestrating the anti-Obama, anti-tax tea party protests in April.
With nearly 70 Republican operatives and former oil industry spokesmen working behind the scenes of AFP’s various fronts and disclosures that point to ever increasing oil and corporate donations to the group, one must wonder, who is guiding this massive front group factory?
The answer is Tim Phillips, the President of AFP who has built a long career of inventing fake grassroots causes. In Phillips’ official biography, there appears to be over a 10 year gap — but that period was when Phillips developed his very first astroturf groups to do everything from smearing his opponents with anti-Semitic attacks to laundering money for criminal lobbyists.
As a Virginia-based political consultant, Phillips got his first big break managing the campaign of Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-VA). After serving as Goodlatte’s chief of staff for four years, Phillips joined former Christian Coalition director Ralph Reed in 1997 to create an astroturf lobbying and campaign consulting operation called Century Strategies. And while Phillips and Reed postured to be motivated by anti-gambling Christian values, the pair helped launder lobbying money from an Abramoff Internet gambling client called eLottery.
Phillips managed to escape most of the controversy that eventually embroiled his partners Reed and Abramoff. Working under the slush fund provided by oil baron David Koch – with a salary approaching $300,000 a year and at least a $7 million annual budget – Phillips continues to lead AFP in building front group after front group to advance his radical right wing agenda.(excerpt,Think Progress)

and rahm is supposed to be such a sharpie…if he is could it be an inside job? just wonderin’…
Rahm is as treacherous as quicksand. He would sell his mother on the corner for political power and right now he is in the position of being able to torpedo everything that Obama wants to do with his hand-chosen Blue Dogs.
Write or fax (emails don’t have the appropriate veritas) to the FCC, complain that the station broadcasting the CBS news is speading misinformation and thereby hurting the public. Demand that a copy of your letter be placed in the public file that all broadcast licensees are required to keep. That might get you some attention.
Emailing cable channels if fruitless unless you enjoy typing practice.
BTW, as a former DJ, I have a First Class FCC license so I do have some experience in dealing with them.
What??? You want to harass broadcasters who don’t report the news in the manner you prefer?
Wonder how much coverage THIS will get?
From the (not so )Great State of Mississippi:
Source: Associated Press
By NEDRA PICKLER (AP) – 20 hours ago
WASHINGTON — A former high-ranking NASA official went on trial Monday on charges that he steered nearly $10 million to a consulting client and lied about it.
Prosecutors told the jury during opening arguments they would prove Courtney Stadd abused the power of his government office to line his own pockets and mislead ethics officials.
Stadd’s lawyer insisted his client was only carrying out the orders of NASA Administrator Michael Griffin when he insisted in 2005 that $12 million of the money be spent in the state of Mississippi.
The client, Mississippi State University, ended up with $9.6 million of the funds. Afterward, prosecutors said Stadd tried to get the university to raise his fee from $7,000 a month to $10,000 a month, citing his help with the funding.
Stadd, who lives in Bethesda, Md., faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted of one conflict of interest count and two counts of making a false statement.
Stadd was NASA’s chief of staff and White House liaison from 2001 to 2003 and served as former President George W. Bush’s NASA transition chief in 2000. After leaving the agency, Stadd started a lobbying and consulting business called Capital Solutions that specialized in advising aerospace clients.

Wonder if Michael Griffin is realted the the DOJ lawyer that Rove tried to install in Arkansas?
What was his name ,Tim Griffin?
Broadcast networks are required by law to act in the public interest. This public interest puts a restraint on how free they can be with their reporting; pubic interest is always on the side of facts, all of them, and nothing but the facts. In this, broadcast networks are constrained in a way that cable networks are not for if they want true deregulation, we can stop allocating bandwidth and the electromagnetic spectrum will become wall-to-wall CB radio.
No other medium has an obligation to report the truth. Freedom of speech and freedom of the press (providing you own a press) permit “news” organizations to lie so long as they do not demand payment for providing lies under the guise of truth.
No one has figured out yet how to hold the corporate media accountable.
For CBS, as broadcast media, complaint letters to the FCC specifying the local CBS affiliate is probably the best approach, like BiscuitBoy says.
Interesting that Nedra Pickler is the author; she was in the tank for the Bushies.
Now, who might be in Mississippi in 2005? Well Haley Barbour, the governor, for one. And then Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott, for another. Don’t let the “Griffin” throw you off the scent.
My recommendation: Buy a bunch of artificial turf doormats. Cut them into (reasonably big) strips (i.e., big enough to show up well on TV and YouTube) and bring them to a town hall. As soon as the wingnuts start acting out, wave the turf strips and chant, “AS – TRO -TURF! AS – TRO -TURF! “
Exactly which “truths” did CBS trample in their reporting? Please explain how the use of state power is justified in this instance.
I wonder if a comparison of photos & videos from the events would show that they are mostly the same people over and over at different events. I’d also like to know if they are getting paid by the health care lobbyists to prevent the American people from having an honest discussion with their Representatives.
Do you happen to recall that HUGE lawsuit in Misssissippi, after Hurricane Katrina, against the insurance companies?
A class action by Dickie Scruggs against Allstate ,for denial of coverage?
Well, Scruggs was Trent Lott’s brother-in-law.Scruggs was already well known for his success against the tobacco companies.
Later,he(Scruggs) was found guilty of attempting to bribe the judge in the Allstate case.
Lott chose not to run for re-election.
Now, for a further bit of irony, the CEO of Allstate at the time of Katrina, was named by Paulson to head AIG,last fall.
Lo
BTW, Katrina hit in ‘05.
Nice: Angela Seabrook, NPR, reporting disruptive activities commented on the birther’s claims about Obama and added claims known not to be factual. Good for her. No ambiguity about the lies being pushed.
If only Fox, CBS, MSNBC, etc etc would have given and give the Health Care Now folk equal time and coverage. Not happenning.
follow the money
These “just say no” folk are the gun god gay voter that Rove tapped into. The people who are willing to vote against their own self interest while they swing their bibles in the air. Somehow they have forgotten that Jesus was a socialist
Pravda had it right when it ran the story about the American Sheeple rushing headlong into Marxism. It is funny that liberals don’t understand that there are conservatives in this country and we have taken note of liberal tactics like using the Internet, networking with various like minded groups, etc. You object to others using your plays and play books.
But the conservatives don’t have an ACORN or SEIU to get taxpayer money.
The SDS has been infiltrated by military spies. Amy Goodman has the story:
http://www.democracynow.org/20…..l_military
“Representative Boehner, do you still support those calling for the murder of Representative Frank Kratovil?”
“What about you Representative Cantor, do you still believe a Congressmen should be killed for voting for health insurance reform?”
“Representative McCotter, do you still agree with those who have called for the murder of one of your fellow Congressmen?”
Everywhere they go for the rest of the month they should have to answer some form of this question.
When will the protesters begin to chant, “Attica! Attica!”
Or more appropriate for the GOP, from later in the movie, “Out of the closet and into the street! Out of the closet and into the street!”
