Mike Lux argues today that August will determine the fate of the healthcare bill. Indeed it will.
We’re having events that we’re working with Credo and others to organize. But remember, these teabagger events are well financed by serious money. David Koch is the chairman of Americans for Prosperity (lynching). Dick Armey’s Freedomworks has been picketing Wexler’s office. One of the traveling teabag wagontrains I saw was set up as some dicey PAC that looked really suspicious. It’s all networked together with right wing radio and reinforced with millions in advertising.
The only thing that can possibly compete is Obama personally traveling around and selling his health care program, supported by the 12 million member OFA list. We can turn up the heat and stiffen the resolve of progressives (maybe), but if OFA hasn’t been planning for this and seriously motivating and activating its members in a state-by-state grassroots effort to support the most important policy battle of his presidency, it will be nothing short of an epic FAIL.
Unless of course the entirely predictable result of doing something half-assed — in which case everyone returns from recess and the Finance Committee bill starts looking like the liberal alternative — achieves someone’s objective. Maybe Rahm still wants his triggers after all.
We’ve got our vacation tracker up and we’re crowd sourcing events in progressive districts. Let us know what you find.

Good morning!
I wish we hadn’t abandoned the State Roots Project a couple of years ago. We were up to 44 states I think. Yes, some were better at organizing than others but we could have built them up since then.
Oh well.
[self censoring on what Rahm can do with his triggers]
Somehow I don’t think Rahm will be showing up at Netroots Nation over the break. I wonder how many of the congresscritters we help get elected will be. I’ll be on Sestak’s tail and in his and Specter’s face when they face off. Brendan will be too. Fun times.
I get e-mails from “Teaparty Patriots”. The expected anti-reform bullshit. But every one- I mean every one – comes with a “To Do List.” Usually 10 items. Who to call, etc. The last one was asking for money, too. They’re active.

These fools keep showing up at AARP town halls and spewing the same line of crap about killing off the elderly.
I was at the dentist yesterday and I’ll be damned if the office staff wasn’t buying into this crap too. These are smart ladies,it’s breaking my heart. I sent them to the Health Care Reform Myths website, but I honestly don’t think it’s going to help much. I’m guessing alot of people who work doing the office work in various doctor and dentist offices oppose some of this out of a fear that a better system will eliminate their jobs.
One would think that they would realize that they are talking about more dental coverage that would benefit them.
OFA is and has been working v. hard but don’t underestimate what we are up against. Even attracting a lot of attention at the grassroots level can’t insulate from the impact of a well-funded professional campaign against health care. It’s enormously difficult to overcome the entrenched interests, and people should remember that when they get fed up. It won’t be a quick victory.
Good Morning Jane and Firedogs,
OFA looks to be organized but difficult to determine the participation levels – we’ll know more in a week
am a little more hopeful than I was a week ago about the Senate (see Rockefeller, Jay) but the big question for me is Conference – who will be the Conferees ??
yes, that’s the big question.
good question, personally i’m preparing to be pissed-off and disappointed. this is the biggest frustration for OFA, across many issues we work, work, work and the President pushes, pushes, pushes – then the damned Congress, Dems in control on both sides, gives too much away right out of the chute with conservative conferee choices. grr.
OT: Clunker cash going to continue…;)) Good press there.
I’m in PA..In the 13th Congressional District..I seem to remember you live somewhere near West Chester??
My daughter goes to Swarthmore College. Sestak represents Swarthmore. I know he’s not a Progressive but I thought I would post this..
