Representative DeFazio told Mike that any bill "has to have a strong public plan" and he’s committed to voting against a bill without a strong public option. Speaking about the health insurance industry specifically, Defazio told Mike:
We don’t have a competitive health care system right now. They can, and do, get together to set rates and exclude people. . . I think the public plan is absolutely essential to keep them honest.

Call Congress and demand,
SINGLE-PAYER HEALTH CARE FOR ALL NOW!
SEMPER FI!
Great that makes the count 13.
Yes! Is he officially on the list as having taken The Pledge?
Not certain but I guess he will be added next round. That is 2 for today.
Is the video set to private somewhere on YouTube? When I click to play it, I get a black panel with white letters that says “This is a private video. If you have been sent this video, please make sure to accept the sender’s friend request.” Never seen that one before.
Anyway, GO MIKE STARK!
Yes, I feel so honored to have Peter DeFazio representing my state. Great work everyone!
He’s good. What was that he said about the insurance industry’s “antitrust exemption?”
Thank you, Rep. DeFazio!
And thanks to Mike Stark for his hard work on this.
Amen! We have pretty good D-congressfolk, but he sets the curve on progressive stands.
DeFazio has been talking for quite awhile on local (Portland, OR) airwaves about the insurance industry being exempt from anti-trust laws – and how just dealing with this issue would go a long way toward true health-care reform.
Yet, we never hear about this either from the Democratic party or the media. Perhaps we need to research this situation further.
How refreshing to hear truth, the REAL Straight Talk. I hope it’s contagious. Just heard coverage of Coryn to vote against Sotomayor….Sen Kay undecided.
Thanks, video working now!
Peter is the coolest.
Love Mike Stark but enough of the public option, I want a one-payer system.
In response to Nandssmith:
The Consolidated corporate media Boards of Television networks (as well as the officers and directors of their Sponsors) are … Republicans!
That’s why the crickets chirp on all these “corporate culpability” issues and sound a 5 alarm fire about Obama calling a cop’s admitted mistake “stupid.”
Take Back the Media!!!
Egggszacktly!
DeFazio is one of the good guys. As I understand it (via Thom Hartmann), the main reason for his not taking the pledge up to this point has been his objection to the inequality of Medicare reimbursement rates.
To 10 and 15, we are trying to get the word out. I’m pumping every dime I can to every liberal blog that is telling the truth. I am totally covered for medical care but right is right and this shit is wrong.
Give til it hurts, this crap has been going on since Teddy Roosevelt was president.
Does anyone have any clue as to how to trackdown a list of stockholders for the major insurance companies. I saw on another blog a breakdown of how much insurance stock a specific congress person held, but failed to think, “Where did this info come from, this is important?”
Doesn’t Oregon already have a single payer health insurance system? I think they’ve had one for 10 to 15 years but haven’t heard it mentioned. I’m assuming the numbers fabulously support single payer over the mess we have now.
Anybody know something about this?
have any of them defined strong?
