Kendrick Meek says Mike Stark is the talk of the Hill: "Everybody wanted to know — who’s the guy with the recorder."
Well, he sure wasn’t happy when Mike pressed him to commit to vote against a health care bill without a robust public plan.
So Mike asked him why people who opposed abortion funding were willing to draw a line in the sand over that issue. Which becomes very interesting in light of the position Meek is taking today to make sure abortion funding is not covered in a health care bill:
MIKE STARK: There are people on the Hill have said that if it comes through with any kind of women’s health care provision, meaning abortion — it’s code word for abortion — they are absolutely voting against it.
So they hold that principle very firmly. So I’m asking you to do is hold…
MEEK: The real issue is that the act that has been on the books since the 1980s as it relates to Medicaid is already illegal to mandate coverage, but we do have this advisory board that will make those decisions. And I think that as we look at this issue, we want to make sure that women health care is not jeopardized, but at the same time, I want to make sure that we follow the letter of the federal law as it stands now.
STARK: The point I was making was that if they can say that this is a principle that I won’t compromise on…
MEEK: Well, let me say…
STARK: …how come we won’t say that a public option is a principle that we won’t compromise on?
MEEK: …well, public option is where I am. I’m there 110%. I gotta run.
The letter Meek signed is below. I see no concern for "women’s health" in evidence — it’s a political document crafted for political gain that Meek has signed on to now that he’s running for state office in Florida. Nor do I hear "110% commitment" to uphold a public plan — he’s definitely holding the door open for himself to vote for some crappy compromise.
Dana Goldstein:
The letter contains no mention of the public plan. But by opposing "federal subsidies" for abortion, these Democrats align themselves with Republican abortion opponents, whose goal is to prevent abortion coverage under any new public insurance options, just as the Hyde Amendment currently prevents Medicaid from funding abortion for poor women.
Meek is in a D+34 district. This is bullshit. If choice advocates can’t hold the line in a district as safe as that, you can kiss it goodbye as a Democratic value.
Of the nearly 65 videos we’ve done so far, Kendrick Meek takes the crown: King of the Weasel Words.

A suggestion from a few of US – Jane. When we call certain Representatives and are dispatched with but we have the individuals name that took the call – could we get the information to Mike and let him know the name of the person their position. The reason I am asking is if he knew that we were treated either rudely or simply dismissed by a lowly intern, policy person, chief of staff, or communications director – it would give him more information to throw at these Reps during the interview and they would have to defend or deal with their staff but do so on camera. Moreover, while Mike is moving around he could drop by those offices and ask to speak with said staffer and ask them why they treated ‘caller x’ a certain way and is that standard practice on an issue so important to Americans.
I have roamed around on the Hill before and focused my energies on the 3 buildings he is working his way around and I know this information would help me. Just saying.
That’s exactly what our whip count tool is set up for:
http://action.firedoglake.com/page/s/publicoption
It gives you a place to let us know who you spoke with, and what they said. We read through the comments very carefully and use that information frequently.
Oh great – I wasn’t certain that Mike was getting all of that information. My bad – I will now reach down and pull my head out of my ass. Awe that feels better and it is a sunny day.
They don’t think women either think or vote for themselves. We have no value as individuals – we’re just there for the benefit of men who want food, a warm bed, clean clothes, or some typing done.
Idjits. May their numbers decrease rapidly.
It doesn’t matter what progressives come up with, they are not going to make the Republicans happy. And when I say progressives, I do not mean Democrats.
But the main reason why health care is taking a hit, is because no media source ever says anything positive about it or the people proposing it.
Perfect example is this clip of Hannity worried about the government telling his kids to put down the video games. WHAT?!?!?

Are you kidding? We LOVE that you’re taking the time to call and ask questions!
Ask away. I am delighted.
In and out OT: Senate defeated the batshit-crazy Thune gun bill.
I think that I now have a new pasttime for those days I’m sitting around DC… traveling around with a video camera on The Hill. Woot! I can take the Red Line right to their doorstep…
Just speeding by, but just heard Ed Schultz while driving and he went, well let’s say bonkers, on Mike “Blue Ross, Blue Shield.” Was yelling on and on about how if Ross continues to stand in the way, Schultz is bringing his shows (radio/TV) to do a week live in Ross’s district. Lots of male ego vibrato from Schultz (part of his whole deal), but was nice to hear someone getting so aggressive toward the weasel on the air. Lot’s of “You wanna piece of me, Ross?!?! You won’t be able to handle what I’ll do to you!” Stuff like this…
Some of that aggression rubs me a little the wrong way, but nice when it’s applied to a good cause.
You’re right, not a word about “women’s health” in that letter. What is wrong with these people?
What’s he running for in Florida? That probably explains it.
Or it could be worse. He looks pretty young – the Hyde amendment has been around so long now he’s probably internalized it as the “neutral” position.
Citizen Hamsher:
Kendrick Meeks is one a those opportunists who have been readin too many books on how ta be clever…if Pelosi puts the whip to his sorry ass he’ll turn into a ragin’ progressive on women’s health and every other issue while he dances the Boogaloo…don’t worry about folks like him, they’re tryin ta do more’n one thing atta time and you know men can’t do that.
So, does Kendrick Meek spend a lot of time hanging out with Todd Tiahart (sp?)…this abortion meme is getting a bit old. Roe v Wade is settled law, and I don’t quite understand how every other thing but “reproductive health” can be covered in a program that covers everything from Aagenaes syndrome to Zadik Barak Levin Syndrome.
The Abortion Debate is just another aspect of Wingnuttia that is being pushed and kept alive by Wingnuts Without Uteri and Needing Huge Campaign Funds. Fuck ‘em.
Meek’s running for Senate against Crist. Just what we need, another DINO in the Senate. The FL Dem Party, as usual, doesn’t know what it wants to do.
I’m delighted that word of the whip campaign is getting out. When I wrote the letter to the editor re: Mike Ross, I let him know that all of the reps campaign funds and income sources are out in plain sight and that they are naked.
Most excellent.
Citizen SouthernDragon:
That sorry assed Meeks will be Senator from Florida when I learn ta sing the Swedish national anthem…ain’t gunna happen real soon.
David Sirota had an interesting article on Open Left yesterday pointing out how Blue Dogs can’t really use the “conservative district” excuse on health care.
Both conservatives and liberals alike have a growing disdain for insurance companies. On this issue, they’re clearly just whoring themselves to the big money.
A-yep.
another drive-by (and sorry once again)
How about “Fewer (if better) – Democrats?”
Or – “Just because you’ve got a ‘D’ by your name doesn’t mean that I like you, or are willing to do one goddamned thing on your behalf”?
P.S. Still waiting for a call-back from Andre Carson (D – IN 7). ‘Course, a man has been known to grow old waiting on one of those….
So I am sure Meek will be making sure that no government money will be spent on Viagra.
Disallowing legal medical procedures and treatments on the basis of one’s sex is plainly discriminatory. I wonder how Meek’s women constituents feel about his treating them as second class citizens.
We’re gonna ask him about that, and some other things, when he makes an appearance in the area. His is not the only D name in the hat right now.
Like jayt said, havin’ a D after your name don’t mean shit to a tree.
Jo we will DEFINITELY put you to work doing that!
I worry they’ll get used to Mike and we need new faces.
I suspect he’ll listen closely to “advice” from Pelosi and other leaders on this legislation. His position of ‘adhering to the law’ is sound.
Yes, thank you for just saying what needed to be said. All else is (nasty word) politics.
