The last House committee to pass the Tri-Committee health care bill out of its committee is the Energy and Commerce Committee. The reason why Rep. Waxman on that committee is having trouble passing health care reform is because of the Blue Dog Democrats. Of the three House committees working on health care reform bill, Energy and Commerce is the one that happens to have the most Blue Dog Democrats on it. So it’s them that’s blocking progress on the House side when it comes to health care reform. Here are their names below again:
- Rep. Barrow
- Rep. Gordon
- Rep. Hill
- Rep. Matheson
- Rep. Melancon
- Rep. Ross
- Rep. Space
The committee mark-up is scheduled to resume on Monday the 20th at 4PM, with three days afterwards scheduled for the continuation of that mark-up. The other two House Committees were able to pass the Tri-Committee House bill out of committee within two days. The delay of the passage of health care reform in the Energy and Commerce Committee is why the DNC is running their ads in the media markets of all 15 Democrats on that committee with the intent to influence the Blue Dog Democrats.
Here’s the DNC ad below:
The 15 media markets that this ad is being run in are: Savannah, Palm Springs, Seattle, Nashville, Bloomington, Sacramento, Salt Lake City, New Orleans, Pittsburgh, Charlotte, Little Rock, Columbus, Marquette, Grand Rapids and Medford.
If the Blue Dogs hadn’t been trying to block progress when it comes to health care reform, they wouldn’t be facing an ad campaign from the DNC and the White House. That to me is a sign that President Obama and others in the Democratic leadership are losing their patience with the "centrists" trying to delay health reform. It’s a definite reversal from the report in the Washington Post of President Obama decrying progressive allies from going after recalcitrant Democrats in the Senate through TV ads—and they’re now going after them themselves.
We’ll see if the ads will work this weekend in the media markets of these Blue Dog Democrats. If they do, then we just might see a change in behavior from these Blue Dog Democrats. I’m not holding my breath on that one though.

Couple of times I’ve read this type of statement by Mike Ross this morning. Wondering just which “progressives” he’s referring, and if true, whether they are thanking him for the same reason he’s slowing down the process?
I think he may be lying about that. It’d benefit him to have progressives fighting each other.
He’s lying to deflect from the fact that he is being hit hard by these ads and YouTube clips showing his constituents how hard he is working against their interests on healthcare reform. The republicans probably called to tell him how happy they are to see him screw us over on real healthcare reform.
Accountability Now media buys in their districts. Hill switched on SCHIP in the face of ads, if history has predictive value he’ll switch again.
Put a spotlight on them where it matters.
So, who loves ya, Mr. President? And who got all those Blue Dogs elected? Just askin’.
Thanks slinker. The voicemail box in Ross’ DC office, (202) 225-3772, is full. I was able, yesterday to leave voicemails in all his Arkansas offices, Pine Bluff, Prescott, Hot Springs, and El Dorado.
Ross has some nerve to talk about fiscal responsibility. He wants to rake in bribes from the health insurance oligopoly in return for letting them socialize losses, while they privatize profits from the healthiest and youngest Americans.
Ross also lied yesterday in the video when he implied that his Medicare patients would have to wait forever to see a doctor if all the new expected insureds were allowed to have healthcare under the new plan. Ross needs to be outed as a fear mongerer who is trying to scare all of the old people.
The other piece at work here is strategic timing on the Blue Dogs’ part. They could have participated in the legislative writing process months ago. Instead, in order to exert more power, they wait until it is time for voting and blackmail everyone by essentially holding all the others hostage to ‘their approval’.
Ross pushing coal. Ross’ district includes Hot Springs, Arkansas. That’s a gold mine for electricity produced from Geo Thermal heat in HIS DISTRICT.
Glad to hear you were able to leave other voicemail messages at Ross’s district offices. That Blue Dog Democrat needs some serious arm-twisting. It’d be nice for change if that were to happen.
Ross and many others won’t take e-mail unless it’s from someone in their district. This drives me crazy. They should care about what people across the country are thinking – if someone agrees with them it might even get them some dollars. I am so sick of these snotty people in Congress who feel they don’t have to deal with the dirty old public.
Good point. These guys have no real ideas for fixing things, making them just like the repubs.
Per Sam Stein at HuffPo:
Parskinson’s Law of Delay: “Delay is the deadliest form of denial.”
Orzag is a good guy and is considered “a Stiglitz protégé” — he worked for Stiglitz during the Clinton administration.
That’s what google maps and zip code sites are for.
There are, according to estimates, 20,000 deathe a year because of a lack of health care. This is nearly 7 times the death toll on 9=11. This works out to nearly 59 deaths a day. Congress wants to take off for five weeks. That is 384 deaths a week or 1918 deaths while they play.
We need an ad to say this.
Twain–you can try faxing instead.
Mornin’ Slinkerwink and Firedogs -
per Nate Silver: Ross’s district is 21.8% uninsured – the congressional median is 14.6%
per open secrets.org: his largest contributor sector** is “Health Professionals” @ $31k this cycle
** still trying to get a handle on their “sector” definitions
This can also be said as not to decide is to decide.
Thanks.
FWIW, I was pleasently stunned that the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel front-paged health care above the fold Millions more lacking insurance: As jobs drain away, so does health care coverage It pretty much mirrors the DNC ad.
It’s a welcome sign that the Journal Sentinel is waking up to the post-Detroit realities of living in the Rust Belt.
No fax machine.
s’okay, did you know you can ‘fax’ from your computer ?
have used both efax & faxzero successfully in the past
Did you try using a zip code from his district?
As an aside, I would like to bring your attention to the flea control device commercial at 2 oclock high on this page. Just thinkin while were talking about dogs.
Twain, I’ve done what booyah #22 suggests: put the Rep’s own zipcode on the line where it calls for zip. Then put your full city state zip on the city line and it will go through.
I’ve done that a time or two when I’ve wanted to reach someone other than my own congresscritter. It burns me up, tho’, that they are happy to accept our contributions (when that’s the case) but aren’t set up for e-mail correspondence.
You can also send free fax at GotFreeFax.com
I generally use the offending Congress person’s local office address in the case of someone especially dense (like Marsha Blackburn) or a pizza hut within their district. This even provides you with a local phone number.
