The labor union AFSCME and one of the nation’s largest health advocacy organizations, HCAN, went up with a huge $800,000 ad buy in eight states urging Blue Dog Democrats to support the passage of health care reform in the House of Representatives.
The Blue Dog Democrats that voted against health care reform in the Education and Labor Committee and the Ways and Means Committee over the past two days were Ross, Tanner, and Altmire. The committee mark-up on Energy and Commerce is still going on, with a lot of obstacles mostly thrown up by the Blue Dog Democrats. We’ll see whether the rest of the Blue Dogs in that committee will pass or block health care reform today. Here’s the list below of the Blue Dogs on that Energy and Commerce Committee:
- Rep. John Barrow (D-GA)
- Rep. Bart Gordon (D-TN)
- Rep. Baron Hill (D-IN)
- Rep. Jim Matheson (D-UT)
- Rep. Charlie Melancon (D-LA)
- Rep. Mike Ross (D-AR)
- Rep. Zachary Space (D-OH)
One of the ads that AFSCME and HCAN put down $800,000 for is targeted at Senator Feinstein, who has been blowing off her Californian constituents, such as Jane Hamsher, Hilda Sarkisyan and her husband, on the issue of health care reform. Over the past week, she has refused to declare her support for the public option in health care reform. She’s not a Blue Dog Democrat but she might as well be acting like one given her actions in the Senate.
Here’s the Youtube ad link of Senator Feinstein’s congressional staff blowing off the Sarkisyans, the parents of an insurance victim, and Jane Hamsher who is a breast cancer survivor. Talk about excellent constituent relations there, Senator Feinstein. It’s why I’m glad to see this HCAN/AFSCME ad targeting Senator Feinstein below:
The rest of the videos at the HCAN Youtube channel are like the Feinstein ad above, but with each ad specifically targeting a Blue Dog Democrat. We’ll see if this broad effort by AFSCME and HCAN will start shifting the Blue Dog Democrats towards supporting the passage of the House Tri-Committee health bill for American families in their districts who can’t afford the high costs of rising insurance premiums, denials of insurance due to pre-existing conditions, and recission policies simply for being sick, having acne, or forgetting to see whether their doctor mailed in that specific form to the insurance company.
As reported before, not all Blue Dog Democrats are opposing the passage of health care reform. Jane Harman supports the passage of health care reform, so does Loretta Sanchez, and other Blue Dog Democrats. It’s time for the news to report the schism in the Blue Dog Democratic Caucus when it comes to health care reform.

About FDL Action
Hey Slinkerwink,
Do we have a list of the Blue Dogs who support the Tri-Committee. We know there are 52 members in the Blue Dog Caucus – at one time we thought there were about 20 or so that were not really going along with their caucus.
Thanks
What is the deal with Jared Polis, anyway? I hope Blue America won’t be raising money for him again, since he voted against the bill in committee:
If Polis has a problem with the “high achievers” tax to pay for health care, he’s really voting his own personal interests and not his districts’.
There are 12 Blue Dog Democrats who didn’t sign onto that letter to the leadership. Let me see if I can find that letter.
Here’s the letter:

whoa, hold on a minute!
aren’t we asking reps to vote AGAINST any public plan that doesn’t meet the hcan and/or cpc criteria? maybe that’s just what polis did?
i have no idea, but i think it makes sense to ask if that was the case (unless that has already been done and i don’t know about it?)
I talked to Bibi in his DC office. According to her, he voted against it, because it was too much of a burden on small business.
Thanks slinker, this is great news. It sends a strong message to all blue dogs. That in turn sends a message of support to the Progressive Caucus.
Actually, no, Polis voted against it because of the surtax on the wealthy.
It would be great to know exactly how many super-rich there are in Polis’s district who will be affected by this oh-so-onerous tax — besides himself and his family, of course.
I LOVE THIS AD.
I want to see it running 24/7 all over California.
The talking points are clear, concise and exactly what that self-important jerk answering the phone in DiFi’s SF office needs to hear a BAZILLION times a day. Every day.
thanks booradley and slinkerwink.
i don’t know anything about the small business issue, but if the surtax is the issue that makes it easy to judge his vote – and him! hope there will be an official statement soon.
Thanks a bunch – if we can get about 10 more or so then we have cut the caucus in half and I consider that a win.
Slinkewink or Jane,
The White House Political Arm is stepping it up to another level – they have just now targeted 15 members of the House Energy Committee, where the major Blue Dog obstruction is happening, here is the text from the release:
YES! Go get ‘em, Barack!
Bloomington is part of Hill’s district. He’s strongest outside Bloomington and a Louisville buy might also be a good idea.
Hill switched his vote on SCHIP when FDL bought ads last year. He may still feel pressure from his losing the seat to a Republican in 2004.
Blue Dogs need to keep getting lots of flack from progressives. Remember this cartoon from nearly 2 years ago? Time to get organized for 2010.
YUP!!
Very good ad aimed at DiFi. Everyone of those Blue Dogs should be pushed hard about the 17 year old who died because Cigna wouldn’t pay for a liver transplant. That’s really appalling and dishonest. They are criminals.
please excuse my stupid question (i’m still trying to educate myself on some of this stuff)…. is there anything in any of the bills now in play that would have prevented cigna’s denial of coverage for the transplant?
The only thing I know is that they at first said the treatment was “experimental” and after their offices got picketed they agreed to pay but it was too late. B*stards – they let a 17 year old die.
Book Salon up at the Mothership with Andrea Batista Schlesinger’s The Death of Why? hosted by Mark Bauerlein
thanks for the reply!
that’s the only part i know about too.
since denial of coverage is part of the business model — it’s one of the ways insurance companies “compete,” i was hoping there was something addressing the issue in the legislation. haven’t seen anything, but then, i’ve only read a very small fraction of the bills.
I talked with one of my sisters yesterday about healthcare reform. She’s a former MD, worked for a health insurance company at one point in her career. She had a recollection about a child dying from an abcessed tooth in the Washington DC area. A quick search found him – Deamonte Driver.
I tried to light a fire under her to talk with non-voting representative Eleanor Holmes Norton and her former representative Capuano and Senator Kerry (she moved from MA to DC in 2001, still is licensed to practice medicine in MA).
It’s not in the top 10 wealthiest, but fairly wealthy nevertheless.
Virginia-11 and California-14 (Connolly and Eshoo) are the wealthiest CD’s represented by Dems…watch what they do
more here from dean baker (2008 article)

These Democrats voted against the House bill in committees this week:
Jason Altmire, Pennsylvania
Jaren Polis, Colorado
Dana Titus, Nevada
Ron Kind, Wisconsin
Earl Pomeroy, North Dakota
John Tanner, Tennessee
One has to assume that these dogs are afraid they’ll get voted out if they support a “liberal” plan. Do they really think the repubs will go easy on them in the next election cycle? They’ll be painted as tax and spend liberals even if they vote with the repubs 100% of the time. Let’s hope they wake up and realize we elected a Dem for president and they’re supposed to be members of his Party.
I’ve been calling my representative and senator every day since this started and I’ll continue until this succeeds. If it doesn’t pass, I’ll still be calling each and every day, just a diffent message.
We cant let these bastards destroy this chance to institute a Public Option. The insurance companies are drooling at the idea of having 50 million new customers to exploit. The Blue Dogs will keep us forever in the toilet. Time to move to France.
i’ve been slogging through reading all the bills, because that’s one of the things i’ve been most interested in. i haven’t found anything in any of the bills yet, house or senate, that would keep the insurance industry from delaying/denying care. the no recissions / no pre-existing conditions / no yearly or lifetime caps requirements are good, but we’re still going to get lousy care if the payers can continue to deny, deny, deny, delay, delay, delay.
