My skepticism about the validity of the 50 vote whip count list continues. Michael Capuano’s office just released this statement:
As Congress continues to debate health care reform the most publicized aspect of the discussion relates to whether or not a public insurance option should be part of any reform package. I strongly support such an option. However, I have never signed a pledge regarding proposed legislation and I never will. I cannot predict the form in which a bill will be presented for my vote. To commit to support or oppose would, thus, compromise the independent judgment I am elected to exercise.
Capuano was at the top of the "leaning yes" list. Of course, so was Carolyn Maloney — who had already released a statement saying she’d vote for Kent Conrad’s co-op plan if it came to that, at which point Howard Dean promptly endorsed Kirsten Gillibrand for her support of a public plan.
I don’t know why anyone thought floating that list served any good purpose, but we’ve contacted about 20 offices so far today and haven’t found one member besides Woolsey who agreed to vote against a bill that doesn’t conform to the CPC principles. And we’re hearing a lot of members are pissed.

Why aren’t these elected politicians any good at politics? It boggles the mind.
Hi, what is CPC? and members of…CPC? or members of Congress. Sorry. The acronyms trip me up big time.
LOL and IASAI (I am such an idiot).
CPC = Congressional Progressive Caucus.
aka members of Congress that claim to be progressive but generally act more clueless than a virgin at the orgy.
Congressional Progressive Caucus.
Although where I’m sitting it could mean NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center. And if you’re a dotcomer, it could mean Cost Per Click :-)
*sorry Dakine.. you beat me to it*
Thanks Dakine and Blub
YGR (you guys rock!)
Lovely people! The CPC, i.e. Maybe the list was distributed by the “plumbers” guild.
I like Cost per Click. More representative of the true nature.
Sad to say, “Screw Maloney!” Support Gillibrand.
No surprise on the validity of the whip tool. We are talking the squirmiest slime here, politicians. In general.
Democracy is ugly, slow and often frustrating. Get rid of the weasels, one at a time. Make sure it is bloody. It will set a precedent for those that follow. And democracy and pressure must be applied constantly and vigilantly. Not just for key votes. And it helps to set up relationships with these people before the crisis time of the big votes. Kind of like the “Stockholm Syndrome”.
Life would be so much easier if I didn’t have to suffer those GD humans and morons. I wish. Nothing different here.
