My Healthcare Speech on the HillBy: Jane Hamsher Thursday July 9, 2009 11:08 am |
Yesterday NYCeve and I went to the Hill at the invitation of John Conyers to speak before progressive House staff members on our Citizen Whip Count effort.
Thanks to Chairman Conyers and his staff for giving us this opportunity.
Pitch Perfect.
Oh God, I can tell you Jane was the hit of the day.
She really kicks ass.
Jane you make me very proud of the way that you presented what the people Want and need for National Health Care!! Please keep up the fantastic work you are doing Jane, you speech was spot on!! I have added it to my Facebook..
Jane:
I just came from the Mike Stark post where I refrained from commenting unfavorably lest he bring you bad publicity back to the front page where I was actually blown away by all you are doing on healthcare. This is your best effort yet. You are the real deal. I knew it but I didn’t KNOW it. I pray for your success and stand in awe of your efforts. You bring tears to my eyes.
Jane. Thanks for posting your pitch for the progressive whip vote. I think we can make them the heroes in this healthcare reform movement. Like our response to Grijalvo’s letter, we just have to shower them with the praise they deserve when they fight back.
Dear Jane,
I have been reading and following you for a long time (in blog years) and have had the pleasure of watching you in numerous appearances and vids – always, always excellent insights and wit – it is one thing to have benefitted from your passion as it came through this screen, but a whole ‘nuther deal to see it in it’s authenticity there in that chamber. so very moving
thank you so much
NO one understands shared credit better than Jane. When she says that we want to make them and their bosses heros, the progressive heros we know they want to be and can be, I can hear the lightbulbs go off above all the staffers’ heads in that room.
Help us help you make you look your best: what a wonderful message.
Thank you, Jane.
Wow.
Outstanding.
Thank you for giving us all a voice and empowering the people!
Bless you.
woohoo! thank you jane. powerful words that they ignore at their own risk.
wow. terrific! congratulations! terrific speech.. for the first time in weeks, I’m starting to think we might actually be able to get this done.
Jane, you never cease to amaze me. I am so greatful for the work you are doing on Healthcare. Thank you for speaking on behalf on people like my son who is disabled. You will never know what it means to us.
Had to put on my ear buds, but once I did, the audio jumped out for me.
Great presentation, Mz. Hamsher. Way to step it up another notch.
Glad to hear it seems message was sent, delivered, and received! *G*
I watched this over at Kos (in Eve’s diary), but I also watched your interview on MSNBC with Jillian… I really enjoyed that too. Nice job on both… thank you (and Eve) for giving us a voice…
Excellent speech, Jane.
I confess that I am not clear on who “progressive House staff members” refers to. I am guessing that as with other types of executives, they are the lower ranking folks who do most of the actual work.
Thank you very much. Mike is doing great. He is really polite and supportive of the members he is talking to. Unfortunately they don’t want to commit, which sucks, so we’re going to have to show them how strongly people feel I guess. But Mike is putting in an amazing effort, we’ll have videos tomorrow and I think you’ll be really proud.
Thanks for all your support and kind words. And best to your son.
I am very hopeful we can do this.
Eve just rocks. When we started this I said “I can’t do this without Eve.” We got to hang out all day yesterday and when I put her on the train back to NY she said “I feel like I’m leaving my new best friend.” She is so wonderful, strong and inspirational.
A house staffer that is a good friend to us all gave me that piece of advice before the speech started.
;)
you were beautiful up there jane. i’m so glad you’re on our planet inspiring and shaking it up.
Cool.
Excellent work, Jane, as was your appearance on Shuster’s program: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qh8YvifcA6c
Wow. Who is that woman? Great job, Jane.
Let’s hope the staff now follow up and make the link to Jane and others so we can work together. If not, we just watch the horrow show from the balcony.
Okay, today’s smackdown of the Townhall woman (what’s her name?) was AWESOME!
Let’s just say you were winning the argument hands down and then she had to have a debate meltdown (”I’m sorry I’m not a cancer survivor!”)
Really, is that ever a sentence that should cross someone’s lips?!
You go girl, you’re my hero.
Jane, the word ‘gratitude’ doesn’t even scratch the surface.
And those progressives who do move health care forward certainly deserve credit.
Marvelous speech.
I’d love to hear more about the reaction.
And great stuff, Jane.
Have tried desperately for over 2 hours to load this and now I can’t hear it. Will there be a transcript anywhere soon? Love you Jane. Looks like your were making good points as the clapping was loud and clear.
“I’m sorry I’m not a cancer surviver”? WTF? That’s the sort of thing that in another format would be coming out of some 13 year old’s mouth trying to taunt someone in the hallway by the lockers in middle school.
i got an email from ofa today asking me to canvass for obama’s healthcare reform with absolutely no details on what plan he wants. i sent an email to the whitehouse:
“I got an email from OFA asking me to canvass for President Obama’s health care reform. I’d like to hear specifically what plan it is he’s advocating. I look forward to hearing from you.”
Methinks that statement is gonna get a lot of airtime on the intertoobz and mayhaps KO and Rachel. WPITW would be a real blast.
Sweet. Mike always gets the A+ for effort. We’ll just have to keep the pressure on and back you all up.
Loved Jane on MSNBC today. That was special.
Just. Wow.
“This is a GAME CHANGING MOMENT.”
Beautiful, beautiful anger as you went on.
You changed the game on that Clownhall shillette too. All the bought assholes can do is try to cut us off, interrupt, shout us down. That’s ALL they’ve got, moth-eaten talking points and bullying.
You’re schoolin these dopes Jane-style.
Never been prouder to be a supporter of this place.
Hope she believes in Karma like she believes in healthcare.
JANE!!! You are phenomenal! Thank you so much for all of your hard work.
In case there’s any confusion, Jane is a cancer survivor.
Jane, I have been waiting all day to watch this! Just got home from work (huge, useless deadline).
And hubby & ! watched this sitting on the bed, laptop style.
Jane! you winner, YOU! We sat on the bed and clapped!
I can’t tell you what it means to hear you talk about Progressive! Makes my heart sikp a beat.
Thank you!
Jane,
I’ve been reading you from the beginning. Thank you.
This video brought tears to my ears.
Bravo!
Sorry, tried to watch the video, but the audio is so poor. Thought it was my machine, but, I can hear someone coughing on mike more than I can hear what you are saying. What I could hear sounds heartfelt and good.
As a Canadian who once lived in the States as a ‘legal’ immigrant and who chose to start my family down there before moving back home, it is incomprehensible to me that shameless shills like the young woman from TownHall that was on MSNBC with the indomitable Ms. Hamsher are not dismissed out of hand by all members of your pro-Media.
Let me put it this way…..
If you get sick in Canada you can go to any doctor or hospital or emergency room in the country, free of charge (that’s what ‘universal’ means)….Furthermore, if you get catastrophically sick in Canada you will never, ever lose your house to pay for the surgery and the aftercare…..And yes, if you get catastrophically sick in this country and there are issues with timely access to the care you need, because we do control costs, we will do crazy stuff like look outside the country to get you the care you need and then we will send you there to get it and then we will pay for it – imagine that.
There’s one other thing you all should know…. here in Canada no politician, even the most whack-a-doodle conservative (and we have a bunch of them) will go near Universal Healthcare, at least not openly. Why? Because it is, without a doubt, the single institution that the overwhelming majority of of my fellow countrymen and women always support, and that even includes most of the folks that choose to vote for the whack-a-doodles.
And it is that last point, I believe, that tells you the most about how much universal healthcare means to Canadians, and why you all can’t let this ‘game changing’ moment, as Ms. Hamsher calls it, pass you by.
Good luck to you all!
.
Fantastic job in your speech and with moving the reality forward through this Fdl action.
(((Jane))) = a class act
I did just the opposite – started my family in Canada (legally) and then returned to the US. I’ve been trying to convince people for 25 years that the Canadian Health System was great, even in whack-a-doodle Alberta where I lived!
Great job Jane! I watched your smack down on MSNBC and have never been so proud.
I just watched the Shuster clip. I had never seen (nor heard of) this hired-fool dingbat Jillian Bandes before. To say that she was offensive would be to put it as delicately as I possibly can.
Jane: It felt so good to see you slap her down. Who cares if she’s too stupid to understand how badly she was humiliated? Lots of people out there in TV Land did (and do) understand…and that’s what really matters.
Go Jane!
Gnome @ 40–
Ahhh, Alberta….our Texas….Yup, that’d be where quite a few of our whack-a-doodles get their start…..
Regardless, as you sugget, even Albertans who break their arms or get diagnosed with prostate cancer can walk into any hospital in that fine province and get treated without fear of having to hock their car to pay for it.
.
I think there are two problems.
The first is access to health care. And, Jane you spoke to this, in this political moment, powerfully and beautifully.
The second is that the health care itself is based on the same monetary models defined and fought against in the first.
So we may change the model of how to get access but we will still need to change the model of what health care IS.
Good health includes clean water, clean air, interaction with nature, and lots of love. It includes TIME to BE. Not just time to DO. It includes the remedies of the earth… the herbs… the abundance of plants… the interrelatedness of health and environment… the correlation of oppressed peeps and oppressed nature… it includes healthy lifestyle — And by healthy lifestyle I don’t mean a consumerism workout at the gym and super juices.
It includes less… period. Less processed. Less chemicals. Less …
While I very much support, and consider the necessity of the first issue, I personally avoid doctors… I may become one of their statistics. Let me rephrase that, I WILL become one of their statistics. My grandmother, who happened to live to 99, held that one of her tenets to good health was avoiding doctors. This did not mean she never saw one, but in between she lived with people who knew natural remedies.
I see a resolution of the second fundamental issue as paramount to all of our health… “all” being the natural world… mineral, plant and animal… and a shift in our economic system.
Best,
Lab
btw, fwiw, I think the new format on the front page is less than desirable. This looks run of the mill cheap. Not that you asked.
Persuasive, inspiring talk.
However, next time you should try to get better audio and video so it can be more effectively circulated.
That was one beautiful, passionate speech, Jane. And thank you for sharing your personal experiences to lend it such immediacy and credibility. You inspired those staffers, and you inspired me, both with your commitment to the people and your own fight for survival, at this time when I was becoming politically kinda ex-pired.
Sure, Lab. You know all about surviving cancer.
Dear Jane,
Will Congress protect the profits and status quo business interests of the the health services or will they protect Americans. Will Congress protect Life and Liberty or will they pull a “Dred Scott” and protect the business interest and profits of many “tax exempt health service entities,” like Blue Cross Blue Shield.” Jane, Dred Scott was related to property status by an SJC decision which protected the institution of slavery, in light of the plain and clear language of the “Bill of Rights.” Today the god given rights of every American is threatened by a similar mentality. Protect corporate health care’s profits, just as Justice Taney’s decision in Dred Scott required the “suspension of logic and reason, “to protect the institution of slavery for the economic reasons………….
Mandated Healthcare imposed on Americans in the absence of effective cost control measures within a service industry lacking tax liabilities and insulated from use of tax incentives and disincentives, is CORPORATE SERVITUDE an not all that much different from being rendered to property status, a slave and a means to profit while you and your family suffer from diseases caused by ??????? Life Liberty and Pursuit of Happiness, compromised by an in accordance with the dictates of “”Corporate America!”" Corporations vs Americans folks….. Jefferson’s worst fear for the republic. Constitutional usurpation under the color of law in the lust for endless profit. “The enemy from within??”
…..as for for profit corporations, use the tax code to craft policy which benefits Americans and the Republic. Not just the myopic self interests of “”crooks”"” practicing legalized discrimination while using contractual law to deny people coverage, letting them die then run to the with the profits.
Slavery is predicated on discrimination. The same type of discrimination utilized by corporate health insurance. I sure as hell cannot change the color of my skin just as one cannot change the realities of contracting lung cancer from second hand smoke or any number of chemicals used as commercial additives, to ensure and enhance profitability???
It is indeed sad that politicians cannot protect Americans as they did the interests of Exxon Mobile et. als. by invading Iraq under false pretenses.
There can be no doubt the loss of blood and treasure to secure access to the vast untapped Jurassic Oil Slick beneath Al Anbar for the future profits of Exxon Mobile et. als., and the King of Saudi Arabia, nice pipeline, could have been much better spent with much greater positive results for the American people and the Republic opposed to the rape of America by our own, over the past decade in the lust for corporate profit!!! Lets eat our own!!!!
Bless you, awesome leader!
