Maxine Waters spoke with Robert Greenwald of Brave New Films. Per Robert, she pledged to vote against any bill that does not have a strong public option.
She also went on record encouraging people to keep up the pressure:
Let me just say to all of our friends out there, that a sustained effort, directed at public officials, demanding no less than a public option, can be very successful. So go to work.
She expressed admiration for the campaign against Mary Landrieu in Louisiana, saying "I loved it," and underscored the urgency of the situation:
The least we can get is a public option. And I understand that’s under review at this time. But that’s the LEAST we can take.

Good morning!
Given the new unemployment numbers I’m thinking we could get some GOP moderates and all the blue dogs.
The longer this fight plays out the more time we get to educate voters.
The GOP wins if voters have no time to study their plans or examine the facts. Bush’s bank bailout, Iraq’s supposed links to Ossama and fictional WMD. The Lizard brain reacts fast to fear, hate etc.
The rational mind contemplates the GOP’s ever changing stories on National Healthcare sound like every bad lie I ever heard.
As soon as we nail down the progressives, I think that’s a great idea.
The GOP if they had a brain should settle with us now because next month the unemployment numbers will be higher and shouldn’t they be back home in their districts then for summer break among all those unemployed voters?
Joe the Plumbers Tea Bag crowds will not save them.
Your right its sad we have to.
If the GOP can’t get immigration sized crowds at their 4 th of July protests, is Glen Beck hawking this protest like he did the last one?
Then the GOP’s save the rich from higher taxes, blame Obama, blame brown people tactic is not working.
Without grass roots support and threats of violence from their grass roots the GOP can’t claim a political mandate from their people.
Somehow despite the polls the Press and the Politicians did not think we had a mandate.
I’m not convinced they think that even now. I am angry that we seem to have to work twice as hard as the GOP to get anything done!
something you may want to add in your phone calls (following up with an e mail of course :D)

Maybe tactically it would be better for us if the GOP kills National Healthcare now.
Because I expect unemployment to keep rising. I expect the Tea Baggers to fail to catch on. Come fall when Congress comes back after spending a hot summer with an increasing number of unemployed voters blaming them GOP and Dem for doing nothing.
Well then we might be able to move the goal posts even further and insist on a good bill with no compromise to the GOP. they had their chance
Thank You Congresswoman Waters !
this should provide some cover for some of the “leaning yes”’s
my words to the Waters staffer -
of course, used the same words with Grayson’s office and they are apparently still dithering X~o
crikey!
full disclosure: that’s me cbl and not oldnslow @ 10 & 8 above
my kingdom for a laptop
Thanks Jane.
I HATE playing the politics of “identity,” but maybe Maxine’s leadership will help move Donna Edwards.
We need to spread the idea in the MSM if we can that if the GOP does not take Obama’s deal now then come fall with higher unemployment numbers Obama will with gaining strength in the polls on this issue to back him make a stronger Healthcare bill.
The GOP’s own paranoia will make them believe. Feed them fear and we can make them believe, make them believe and we can control them.
They are adrenaline junkies they need something to fear, something to hate. Its a weakness time to EXPLOIT it.
I think the Texas people were looking for you on BT’s thread today they are thinking of seeing Joe the Plumber in Austin Texas. Please if you go get pictures of the crowd from a height so we can get a real head count and stay safe.
thanks. sadly it didn’t work out for today – although looks like we’ll get a Central Tx Firepup gathering some time this wkd out of the deal
You could give us local commentary about Joe the Plumber’s protest by watching the news.
Count the death threats to Obama, the signs saying Texas should leave the Union, the Census should be ignored you know give us a feel as to the GOP’s issues and tell us if you think the crowd is local or trucked in, plus give us police reaction are the police treating the Tea Baggers the way Dems were treated at the GOP convention?
I personally don’t especially like Maxine but this is good news. She makes noise in the good sense.
what def of “strong” public option did maxine waters commit to?
thanks to all who are making calls. the bills so far don’t look good to me — we need all the help we can get.
the dems don’t need the gop to pass healthcare reform — imo this is an intra-dem battle.
also, is there an “obama’s deal” right now? i haven’t seen it. and the dem legislation coming from the leadership in both the house and the senate does not look anything like a “strong” public option to me (with the major caveat that i have lots more study to do on them). so far they look more like massive insurance industry bailouts.
the only “strong” public option legislation i’ve seen is stark’s hr 193. but that does not appear to be under consideration (maybe it’s hiding out with hr 676, conyer’s single payer bill?).
Just to let you all know. I returned from Sweden after a couple of weeks.
Apparently, Sweden went private with their health care several years back. After some thirty interviews, I did find one person who liked it. The rest “hated” it, not just because of increased costs, but delays were cited by some twenty-five of the people.
Many were disgruntled about the, “do whatever the US does” attitude in their government.
I’m saying conditions are right we can get a stronger bill now. I am saying that with unemployment numbers only getting worse we can get the GOPers. I am saying that the longer we have to educate the public on healthcare an issue that everyone cares about because they or someone they know has lost a job and health insurance the stronger our support on this issue will be.
We got them we need to start acting like we won.
