IL-12: I talked to Jerry Costello’s staffers, and they said he is firmly against a public option if it includes money for reproductive services. I politely told the staffers that a “no” vote on the public option was unacceptable.

Jerry is usually a good Democrat on votes–he’s consistently voted no on Iraq war supplementals–but he’s always socially conservative.

Noah over there sent this response to a fundraising letter from ‘Give ‘em hell’ Harry Reid:

Until there is a public option (and one that isn’t a watered-down, crossed-fingers-behind-the-back one), or, better yet, single-payer, I don’t see why I should support or vote for Democrats anymore. Your party seems to think we have no choice but to vote for you. Well, I’ll either support third-party candidates or just stay home. What’s the difference? Now I hear even President Obama is open to abandoning the public-option concept. Might as well have given Bush a third term.

I’m sick of the sell-outs and sick of the corruption and bribe-taking. I’m tired of the smirks and the laughter coming from inside the Beltway. Tired of being played. You guys either have no idea or just don’t care. The Senate is the worst of all. I’ll give the Repugs credit, though. At least they have a spine. You’re givin’ us hell, all right. A Republican-lite is still a Repug.

Sorry, but wait a second. Nadler specifies his criteria for a robust public option, in line with the Congressional Progressive Caucus’s criteria. Fine. Many legislators support such robustness criteria.

But as for what he’s pledging to vote against, all he says is, “any health reform bill that excludes the public option.” He is not saying that he would vote against any bill that fails to meet his criteria for a robust public option.

By my read, that means he could still vote for a weak public option.

Note that his robustness criteria call for a public option “open to anyone.” But the HELP bill excludes most people with employer-based health insurance from choosing the public plan.

So is Jerry saying he’d vote against the HELP bill in its current form?

If his promise to nyceve went beyond his written statement, I’m happy.

so these progs taking the pledge-they are promising to allow ANYONE to opt into the pub opt if they want even if their employer is providing benefits? the help bill prohibits this.
