PhRMA just started a run of “support Kay Hagan” ads — I saw one tonight. They’re using an interesting template — one that frankly looks like the standard Dem election one — and the script is the usual BS about “supporting people’s right to choose their own doctor”.

Clearly, Big Pharma feels as it has something to gain from running them.

Jane,

Saying that Hagan opposed a public option at all, let along opposed it “quite openly,” is 100% false. The post you linked to merely quotes a News & Observer article that said Hagan “isn’t ready to support” a public option.

First of all, the N&O article never quotes Hagan saying that she was opposed to a public option — and that’s because she never said it. Saying that you’re not ready to support a policy is completely different from saying that you oppose the policy. The N&O article made clear that Hagan hadn’t publicly taken sides yet:

Hagan, in a statement released by her office, said she continues to think things over.

This N&O article — which clearly states that Hagan was taking no position on a public option — is the only evidence you cite to support the statement, “Kay Hagan opposed a public plan quite openly.” Really? It’s simply not true that Hagan ever opposed a public option, and she certainly never opposed it “quite openly.”

Yes, Kay Hagan is owed an apology. From you, preferably. The uninformed rumor-mongering about Hagan’s position on a public option — which, by the way, was completely false — has been out of control. Sorry, but this isn’t proof that “activism works,” it’s proof that activists act before they know all the facts (and then take credit when the facts come out).

Thanks for the hard work, Jane. Actually, though, I never said that Hagan is owed an apology as you have it written. I said that some people “here” - as in at BlueNC - owed her an apology. There were some very ugly, nasty, over-the-top things said about/to Kay Hagan. They were completely unnecessary and didn’t further our cause one bit. I’ve blogged with these folks for almost four years and love them dearly, but we have a few who tend to take things too far. I don’t think it is out of line for me to nudge them to be kind.

We have a long history of action plans at BlueNC. I started running action plans on a daily basis for a while back in 2006 and many of our community members pitch in and put action plans together for us these days. It is our job as constituents to lobby our senators and representatives and I would never urge anyone to apologize for doing something that they have every right to do.

Again, great job. Thanks for all you do.

I’ll never apologize to any elected official for pressuring them into changing a wrong-headed position. I do appreciate elected officials who can say, “I was wrong about this, but I’ve been educated on the issue and I’ve changed my mind.”

I only expect two needed votes out of Hagan: a vote to get the bill out of committee and onto the Senate floor and a vote for cloture. I fully expect her to vote nay on the bill itself.

To my fellow ‘pups in North Carolina: primary Kay in 2014, and elect a better Democrat.

Thank you Jane. He is now cancer free and doing very well. I don’t know that he would be alive today if it weren’t for a local program called Project Access that instead of paying some bills, gets doctors, hospitals and other care facilities to agree to give treatments, drugs, etc. for free. We are so grateful for all of your efforts to get health care for all Americans.

She responded to my emails with a form letter that did not mention health insurance much less the public option.

I will apologize to her all day long, if that’s what it takes, to all me to buy health insurance in NC.
