On the conference call announcing the measure, Senators Dodd, Brown, and Whitehouse said that all 13 HELP Democrats would be voting for this bill. That’s right, every single one.
Betsy Muse at Blue NC thinks Hagan is owed an apology. But Kay Hagan opposed a public plan quite openly. If she’s supporting this, she changed her mind — which means the activism worked, and everyone who picked up a phone and called, or took the time to write and let her know how they felt should take a bow. Excellent work.
It still appears to be a very flawed bill that is inferior to the House bill. I’m sure everyone will still be working hard to make it better, and that means keeping the pressure on Hagan.
Breast cancer survivors will be delivering signatures to Hagan from people all over the country who want a public plan. You can add your support and sign here.

Oh yes, by all means, let’s be sure to apologize to The Lady Kay for listening intently to exactly what she said and reporting it entirely accurately. If there’s any apology due, Ms Muse, it’s an apology to Americans everywhere who devoted their energy to trying to move the apparently obstinate Senator Kagan off a position she now claims never to have held.
Really, are constituents this obdurate? Need we be so obsequious in our fealty to our betters? Last year at this time, Kay Hagan was just a State Senator. She’s hardly House of Lords category. I say she needs to apologize to all of us for causing us so much worry.
i didn’t apologize when i called. I thanked her for changing her mind, asked if it was all the breast cancer survivors that forced the switch, and suggested that next time we shouldn’t have such a big fight.
I added, “please include this in your message to ms. hagan. Since the 1970s and Nixon, “liberal” and “left” have been treated as dirty words. That’s obsolete. If anything, it’s the right that’s been discredited, over and over again. Senator Hagan needs to listen to the liberals for a change, give us a shot. Cus we’ve been right before and we’ll be right again, you wait and see.”
oh and then i called up joe lieberman and made fun of him. they hung up on me.
I’ll apologize for calling her a weasel when she apologizes for being one. No hard feelings Kay. My elderly parents who live in North Carolina worked hard for your election. For their sake, I hope you support a bill that gives them a fighting chance to afford old age.
And many others to make it to old age.
brendanscalling, What did you say to Lieberman’s staff?
I’m imagining a Nelson Muntz “Ha-Ha!” complete with finger-pointing.
My partner Frank and I also worked for Kay’s election last year while he was undergoing chemotherapy for lymphoma. As two of Hagan’s constituents with no health care and a mountain of medical debt, we’re waiting for Kay’s apology for being willing to sellout our best shot at health care to please BCBS.
When was it? Yesterday that I called her an asshole. Maybe that was a bit harsh. I’ll withold judgment and no more name calling until a vote or other major development. Well, I’ll try my best. This is gonna be tough. No promises.
I’ve called him a prick twice in the past 2 days. No apologies.
LOL. That’d be more than enough to get hung up on. But I bet brendanscalling used a few more words.
She responded to my emails with a form letter that did not mention health insurance much less the public option.
I will apologize to her all day long, if that’s what it takes, to all me to buy health insurance in NC.
I am sorry to hear that. I hope your partner is okay.
Thank you Jane. He is now cancer free and doing very well. I don’t know that he would be alive today if it weren’t for a local program called Project Access that instead of paying some bills, gets doctors, hospitals and other care facilities to agree to give treatments, drugs, etc. for free. We are so grateful for all of your efforts to get health care for all Americans.
Jim
wow. sounds like a great program.
I’ll never apologize to any elected official for pressuring them into changing a wrong-headed position. I do appreciate elected officials who can say, “I was wrong about this, but I’ve been educated on the issue and I’ve changed my mind.”
I only expect two needed votes out of Hagan: a vote to get the bill out of committee and onto the Senate floor and a vote for cloture. I fully expect her to vote nay on the bill itself.
To my fellow ‘pups in North Carolina: primary Kay in 2014, and elect a better Democrat.
Thanks for the hard work, Jane. Actually, though, I never said that Hagan is owed an apology as you have it written. I said that some people “here” – as in at BlueNC – owed her an apology. There were some very ugly, nasty, over-the-top things said about/to Kay Hagan. They were completely unnecessary and didn’t further our cause one bit. I’ve blogged with these folks for almost four years and love them dearly, but we have a few who tend to take things too far. I don’t think it is out of line for me to nudge them to be kind.
We have a long history of action plans at BlueNC. I started running action plans on a daily basis for a while back in 2006 and many of our community members pitch in and put action plans together for us these days. It is our job as constituents to lobby our senators and representatives and I would never urge anyone to apologize for doing something that they have every right to do.
Again, great job. Thanks for all you do.
Jane,
Saying that Hagan opposed a public option at all, let along opposed it “quite openly,” is 100% false. The post you linked to merely quotes a News & Observer article that said Hagan “isn’t ready to support” a public option.
First of all, the N&O article never quotes Hagan saying that she was opposed to a public option — and that’s because she never said it. Saying that you’re not ready to support a policy is completely different from saying that you oppose the policy. The N&O article made clear that Hagan hadn’t publicly taken sides yet:
This N&O article — which clearly states that Hagan was taking no position on a public option — is the only evidence you cite to support the statement, “Kay Hagan opposed a public plan quite openly.” Really? It’s simply not true that Hagan ever opposed a public option, and she certainly never opposed it “quite openly.”
Yes, Kay Hagan is owed an apology. From you, preferably. The uninformed rumor-mongering about Hagan’s position on a public option — which, by the way, was completely false — has been out of control. Sorry, but this isn’t proof that “activism works,” it’s proof that activists act before they know all the facts (and then take credit when the facts come out).
PhRMA just started a run of “support Kay Hagan” ads — I saw one tonight. They’re using an interesting template — one that frankly looks like the standard Dem election one — and the script is the usual BS about “supporting people’s right to choose their own doctor”.
Clearly, Big Pharma feels as it has something to gain from running them.
