LeadershipWhite House Threatens Freshmen Who Won’t Vote For Supplemental

By: Jane Hamsher Friday June 12, 2009 12:19 pm

CQ:

Rep. Lynn Woolsey of California, a leader of the antiwar Democrats, said the White House is threatening to withdraw support from freshmen who oppose the bill, saying “you’ll never hear from us again.” She said the House leadership also is targeting the freshmen. “It’s really hard for the freshmen,” she said. “Nancy’s pretty powerful.”

Please call members of Congress and tell them to stand up to this kind of thuggery

Update:  Ryan Grim, via email:

I was there when Woolsey said that — fwiw, she didn’t say the dnc or dccc were making the threats, she said the white house was….
And she said leadership is pushing it hard, but the specific threats she mentioned were coming from the WH.

Ryan has a write up over at Huffington Post.

Supplemental Whip Count Update: 32 “No,” 15 “Leaning No” — We Need 39

By: Jane Hamsher Friday June 12, 2009 8:38 am

I guess the Whip Count deities must be smiling on us this morning. I’m counting 32 “No” votes for the supplemental, and 15 “leaning no.” We need 39 votes.

These calls are having a big effect.  Members are hearing that “Cash for Clunkers” is chump change, and not a satisfactory reason for switching their votes on an issue like war funding.  They’re being heavily pressured by Rahm Emanuel to abandon their principles, and the only support they’re getting for doing the right thing are your calls.

Please let members of congress know that you stand by them in opposing this bill  — your call is important..

Will Rahm Emanuel Force Kendrick Meek Into Marco Rubio’s Hands Over IMF?

By: Jane Hamsher Friday June 12, 2009 7:28 am

Kendrick Meek has confirmed to several sources that he’s going to vote in favor of the $100 billion bank bailout, as well as the $4 billion “Cash for Clunkers.” He’ll try to say “I’m voting for the war.”

I wonder if Marco Rubio will see it that way?

Updated Whip Count — To the Phones!

By: Jane Hamsher Friday June 12, 2009 5:00 am

Many representatives have said they didn’t know how they’d vote on the war funding supplemental until they saw the conference report.

Well, now they’ve seen it. And we know that “Cash for Clunkers” is supposed to make progressives abandon their commitment to vote against any war funding that doesn’t have a timetable for troop withdrawal. Call them and tell them that you supported them for 8 years because of that commitment. They should take it as seriously as you did and shouldn’t throw it away for chump change.

Because Nobody Cares About The Troops More Than Joe

Glenzilla:

It’s quite amazing to watch the very same people who endorsed every policy that drove anti-American hatred to sky-high levels — the attack on Iraq, torture, Guantanamo, etc. — insist that these photos must be suppressed because anything that increases anti-American sentiment will endanger the lives of The Troops.

Obama Writes Letter Opposing Inclusion of Graham-Lieberman in Supplemental

By: Jane Hamsher Thursday June 11, 2009 5:41 pm

The conference committee on the Supplemental today rejected an amendment by Mitch McConnell, which would have added the Graham-Lieberman photo detainee suppression amendment into the bill.

Franken-Coleman Update, 06/11/09: Cash on the Barrelhead

By: Phoenix Woman Thursday June 11, 2009 5:32 pm

Remember how the three-judge Election Contest Court ruled that because of the egregious frickin’ misconduct committed by his legal team, that Norm was going to be on the hook for at least some of the court costs incurred by his opponent, Al Franken? Well, the bill was finally totaled up yesterday, and the ECC ruled that Coleman must pay Senator-Elect Franken $94,783.15. And counting.

Conference Report on Supplemental: No Lieberman, Yes Clunkers

By: Jane Hamsher Thursday June 11, 2009 5:24 pm

By a vote of 13 aye 17 nay, the conference committee voted down the McConnell amendment to add the Senate language regarding Graham-Lieberman to the conference report.  Lieberman is out. Cash for Clunkers is in — by a vote of 15 to 17, the Judd Gregg amendment to take it out was defeated. Feinstein voted [...]

Hillary Clinton Wants A Bigger Mushroom Cloud Than Condi Rice

By: Jane Hamsher Thursday June 11, 2009 4:37 pm

“Financial hardships and poverty breed desperation, which helps terrorist networks to attract new recruits with messages of hate, violence and intolerance. IMF financing reduces this threat by reducing economic instability in vulnerable states.”

That would be slightly more meaningful if the administration wasn’t stonewalling Maxine Waters’ attempts to make sure the money actually goes to poor countries, rather than to European banks who need to cover their own bad mortgage losses.
