Turn Maine Blue Confirms Pingree and Michaud “No” On Supplemental

By: Jane Hamsher Saturday June 13, 2009 10:52 am

Maine Owl reports:

As of the morning of Friday June 12, the offices of both Maine Representatives are reporting our members will vote NO to the conference report of HR 2346. Don’t stop calling. A lot can happen with Rahm on the case. Please continue to register your views. And THANK YOU to all who have called so far.
And Gerald Weinand confirms:
A source tells me that while the final version of the compromise bill will not be reported out of the Conference Committee until most likely Tuesday, “unless something changes dramatically,” Chellie Pingree will vote against H.R. 2346. Again.

And THANK YOU to Turn Maine Blue for staying on top of these reps.  We hope Pingree and Michaud show up on Tuesday and cast these principled votes.

It’s the weekend, but anyone who feels like taking action can write letters to local papers.

Peter Welch Takes Heat From Vermont Blog Over Supplemental Vote

By: Jane Hamsher Saturday June 13, 2009 9:03 am

Odum at Green Mountain Daily:

Fast approaching (next Thursday, probably) is a vote on yet another supplemental to Iraq War funding. Welch is among those who vowed not to approve any more such funds unless they included a timetable for withdrawal – and he has held to that vow in the past.

[]

While Representatives such as Frank and Jackson-Lee have indicated they will weenie out on this, we trust that Rep. Welch will join fellow progressives like Baldwin, Conyers and Woolsey and stick to his guns (so to speak).

I guess the Vermont anti-war movement isn’t going to quietly just to further Peter Welch’s leadership ambitions.

Brad Sherman to Vote No On Supplemental — 34 Down, 5 to Go

By: Jane Hamsher Friday June 12, 2009 4:51 pm

Brad Sherman’s office has confirmed that he will vote “no” on the supplemental according to those lobbying on the issue.  The number of Democrats now committed to vote against the bill in its present form is 34.  We need 39.

Sherman’s decision to oppose the supplemental is noteable because he one of two who voted for it the first time that have now switched their votes.  Sherman, like Peter DeFazio, is opposing the bill because of the inclusion of the IMF funding.

It will be interesting to see how Jim Cooper votes on the bill.  Cooper is committed to being “fiscally responsible” and will betray everything he’s ever professed to believe in if he votes for a pork-laden bill like the supplemental.

If I were a betting woman, I’d say that number is likely to be at least 35.  Cooper and other Blue Dogs are going to have a really tough time in their districts with this vote.

John Amato: “Bail Out California Before the IMF”

By: Jane Hamsher Friday June 12, 2009 3:21 pm

From Crooks & Liars: Please Bail Out California before the IMF Digby says: "This bail-out for European banks by the American taxpayer is such a bad idea that they had to attach it to a "support the troops" emergency supplemental in order to get it passed. Dear President Obama, please help California. We have a [...]

Speak Out: Write Letters To Your Local Papers and Urge Members of Congress to Vote “No” On Supplemental

By: Jane Hamsher Friday June 12, 2009 2:30 pm

Rahm Emanuel is threatening Democratic freshmen if they don’t vote for the bill.  We need 39 Democratic votes to defeat it.  Already 32 have committed to oppose it.  Please write your local paper and urge them to support your member of Congress in voting against the supplemental.  (If you don’t know who your member of Congress is, you can look them up here.)

Write letters to the Editor and say “no” to the supplemental

Howie Klein: Blue Dogs Better Think Before Voting For Supplemental

By: Jane Hamsher Friday June 12, 2009 1:12 pm

Howie sez:

I hope these Democratic leaders have thought what they’re going to tell vulnerable Blue Dogs to say when the Republican attacks on bailouts for European banksters get really big. We hear there are now big time funders stepping up to the plate on this one. Shocking that all three new Arizona members of Congress– Harry Mitchell, Gabby Giffords and Ann Kirkpatrick– are willing to sacrifice their careers for the sake of $108 billion for a European bank bailout– although I was told by one congressional office (which favors the IMF bailout that 8 billion will go to poor children with extended bellies in Third World countries). Ed Morrissey is ringing the bell and the Blue Dogs better think quick.

The Next Right is looking at Blue Dogs too.

Robert Greenwald on Ed Schultz: “Rethink Afghanistan”

By: Jane Hamsher Friday June 12, 2009 1:08 pm

Robert Greenwald has been a committed antiwar activist since the war in Iraq began. He was on Ed Schultz last night talking about his film “Rethink Afghanistan.”
