Great response to our Whip Count Tool. People are calling offices and folks are very interested but since there is a lot of activity going on with regard to health care, it’s important to take the time and explain what we’re asking for.
Yesterday, the TriCaucus (the Congressional Black Caucus, the Congressional Hispanic caucus and the Congressional Asian Pacific Caucus), together with the Progressive Caucus held a press conference to demand that any health care reform include a public health pan option.
There are many different ideas about what a public option should include, and that’s great. That debate is really important. We’re not trying to tell anyone what the best public option would be — we’re trying to draw a line in the sand, build a backstop, get broad agreement that people will vote against any bill that does not contain a public plan that is:
- Available nationwide
- From day one
- Answerable to Congress and the voters
So keep calling, take the time to explain to whoever answers the phone how important it is that forty Democratic members of the House (only 40!) agree to hold that line. That ought to let the air out of Kay Hagan’s tires.
It’s insufferable that each of these Senators thinks they’re the President because their vote is critical. Well, there’s the matter of the House of Representatives too, and nobody wants to be the Democrat who blocked health care passage.
So get on those phones an let’s build a brick wall.

And if any of them try to weasel out by saying that they’ve got to look at the legislation first (when as we all know they very seldom have the time to do so and rely on their staffs to brief them on each bill), Mauimom has the answer:

I spoke with Jared Polis’ office yesterday and was told that he is not for the public option, but for single payer. Didn’t sound to me like he was “leaning for”.
Anyone in the district for DeFazio, please call him continuously. He is looking to run for governor in our state and the bastard voted for the war last week. He has lost any credibility as a “progressive” I am sorry I voted for the man when I was in his district. He doesn’t take calls from any but his constituents.
He has already lost the governor’s race, because John Kitzhaber appears to want his job back and will beat any other candidate by a wide margin.
May we use these numbers to call Mark Sanford’s office and ask him when he’ll RESIGN? Also.
I called my Rep. today and will call Kerry tomorrow.
Get on the bandwagon!!
I called my senators (Wyden, Merkley) Tuesday and insisted on the public option, sent them postcards yesterday too. I sent a post card to my rep., David Wu as well.
I also said (politely) to the staffer who answered the phone at Wyden’s office that I just can’t support the senator’s “Healthy Americans Act” because it does not include a public option.
So, who then would you have voted for in lieu of DeFazio, or are you talking primary?
there are 5 districts in Or, I have lived in a couple.
