Big guns coming out for the supplemental:
President Obama has been calling members to help secure their vote for the supplemental, according to a senior Democratic aide.
We’ve managed to hold 36 progressives (and shoot down a couple of trial balloon defections). Rahm threatened, bribed, cajoled, browbeat, threw tons of pork in to pay everybody off — and he failed. Obama had to come in and clean up his mess.
More than one person has told me that Rahm overplayed his hand. He packaged the IMF and the supplemental together, and proceeded to browbeat progressives that the White House has been snubbing from the get go. He was too cute by half when he threw in Lieberman-Graham so he’d have something to deal out for progressives in the House. Even Barney Frank got mad and refused to be played like that.
Keep the calls coming. Drive those "leaning no" into the "no" column. Make them separate these bills so the IMF can come out from behind the war funding and we can have an honest discussion about whether we really need a $108 billion European bank bailout right now.
I’m feeling more hopeful about a public plan, though. If Obama will make calls for this, surely he’ll do so for healthcare.

BawHaHAHA!!!!
Boxturtle (Well, what was YOUR first reaction?)
what public plan?!!???
that’s always been the question – do we get something that bails out the insurance companies by letting them dump their sickest customers on the tax payer or do we get something like stark’s bill hr 193 — which i note appears to be just as off the table as is hr 676 (conyer’s single payer bill)?
Ya know, I see Jackson Jr in the yes column and I can’t help but wonder how much that will boost his chances for Burris’s senate seat.
Boxturtle (Justifiable cynicism)
I find that hard to believe.
Thank you Jane and Pups!
Thanks for all you’re doing, Jane.
Jane Hamsher on my teevee? I guess elections really do have consequences.
That was sweet this morning … wasn’t it?
The conversation has been so one sided for so long it was very refreshing to hear my views represented for a change. Excellent job Jane!
Rahm FAIL.
Love that sound. A few more and he might get bumped from the lineup.
He can always find a job in the OTHER country for which he claims citizenship.
“OK, Rahm – to the bench with you!”
Hey gang, I just called the six California congresscritters listed in Jane’s previous post. I got through on the first or second ring every time. One staffer responded to my message, saying “Absolutely!” All the staffers were friendly and they ARE listening.
Pull the other one!
I just called Farr’s office, who were very nice and supportive. I thought he was definitely in the bag as a no on the supplemental.
Thank you SOOO much!
This without question the result of the work done by a few people who care enough to pick up the phone and dial.
You rock.
Here is the list of Hispanic Members of the Progressive Caucus.
1. Raul Grijalva is a No vote.
2. Xavier Becerra is from California and his office has not announced how he will vote. And if you’re from California, he’s a ‘easy’ vote for No, if pressure is applied.
3. Luis Gutierrez is a No vote.
4. Ed Pastor, is on Pelosi’s management team and as of yesterday, his office was not issuing any info “for attribution”.
5. Linda Sanchez should be an ‘easy’ No vote if pressure is applied by Californians.
6. Jose Serrano is a No vote.
7. Nydia Velasquez is a No vote.
8. Hilda Sois is now Sec. of Department of Labor.
Jaango
I like the sound of it too, but there’s been no vote or bill withdrawal yet. CSPAN will be carrying the house floor, it’ll be interesting to watch who lobbies whom. Bet Rahm is there in person. Will Obama show in person? If so, he’ll carry the vote.
Boxturtle (That would be unprecedented)
He was, but I saw him listed as a wobbly last night on SFgate article. Thanks for calling.
If Obama is whipping, Rahm didn’t do his job. Because people who called did theirs, which I just totally love.
I don’t know Jane. I was mighty confident that Obama would address LGBT rights but when he did, it wasn’t in the way I’d hoped. I’m no single issue voter but his legal brief defending DOMA has turned me off from him and the entire system. Once again, it’s never time for us or our civil rights.
I’m sorry, but this is far too wide-eyed for one’s sound health.
I will second that. Everyone take the handoff from Jane and run with it.
thank you, thank you everyone
Farr’s office was a little testy with me this am – staffer ’suggested’ I call my congressman to see how he would vote. took it as a good sign they are getting lots of calls
Rahm looks like the cat who ate the canary, but Tweety outsmarted Sylvester once again.
So is the main objection to the actual supplemental or to the IMF thing?
markey and tierney still not saying….
I’m with Margaret@20. He wouldn’t pick up the phone for DOMA. What makes you think he’ll do it for healthcare?
Donna Edwards staffer said: “She can’t release that information right now, but she is leaning no.”
this is just my take….
the imf thing is not supported by economic nationalists on the right (and so peels off a bit of pro-war support from the bill) and not also supported by progressives because the imf’s history (see dean’s post on this).
so, the right wing economic nationalists hate the imf (although for different reasons than progressives) and that means the administration needs progressives to vote for the war supplemental because they can’t rely on all of their republican war mongering friends’ support.
we’re pushing back because we don’t think the anti-war progressives should be helping pass supplementals for endless wars.
an apt quip
that pic of ol Go Easy up there reminds me of something . . .oh yeah
So would the supplemental pass on it’s own?
So where is Carolyn Maloney on this? How come she isn’t listed as a solid No vote?
ironic as sh* that my execrable rep Carter finally votes the way I want him to X~o
Hi Jane and FDL community.
I have been a lerker for several months and just decided to post in support of your great efforts to defeat this supplemental budget. I think what you’ve done and are doing is great. I’ve just recently exited from the right wing echo chamber (in the past, I greatly objected to this terminology), I just could no longer reconcile the lies and blantant hypocrisy. Now, I’m trying to educate myself and understand what I really think and believe. Thanks again.
there’s one way to find out:
(202) 225-7944
I’ll match your call with one from me :D
because he want the political win. doesn’t have to be a good plan.
based on what we’ve seen so far, i bet the bill will have a “public plan” but not one that will deal effectively with structural problems (like adverse selection, under funding incentives, insurance business model based on denying coverage, etc…) or provide anything close to universal health care or control total health care costs.
hope i’m completely wrong.
Welcome to the Lake. Comment often.
i expect so.
but it should be without any help from anti-war progressives. let the warmongers do it on their own.
welcome swansong50.
Yes, easily. The GOP would support it, the antiwar dems would not have the votes to stop it. But the IMF and Holy Joe’s amendment would both go down in flames on their own.
IMO, if they can’t pass the IMF with the supplemental, the house leadership will move to strike the amendment. Then pass a clean bill for the war and try to attach IMF/Holy Joe to something else.
Boxturtle (Wonder if Rahm will keep his threats?)
Thanks folks! Makes more sense to me now.
or his deals – per Jane’s reportage – he’s purported to have promised to “go easy” on what were once DCCC targeted Republicans:
McCotter – MI
Dent – PA
Buchanan – FL
Young – FL
Don’t see how he can keep the threats – going to need everyone of those votes. It was a stupid move for him to make anyway.
I’m looking forward to seeing how many of our Blue America people vote for this. Howie is, I’m sure, watching very closely.
Yeah, that was my thought. He’s going to need these votes for at least two years and he really can’t afford to throw them under the bus.
I dunno how he’s going to keep those “go easy” deals, but he’d better keep any promises he made to those dems who support him. Word get’s around the Hill that he don’t pay his debts and congresscritters will start demanding his part of the deal FIRST.
Boxturtle (It is wrong of me to enjoy anothers misfortune. Perhaps I will be forgiven in this case)
You are forgiven. Go in peace. :)
Rock on, rockin’ Jane!
Rahm’s whipping … FAIL.
Jane’s whipping … WIN!!!!
A good day for our side. Obama waits until the project is in progress to see what’s going down and THEN he steps in. That’s his tactical pattern. He wants health care so bad he can taste it, I think. He will get health care at the expense of just about everything else. And pick up the pieces later. In the meantime the ’left behinds’ are trashing their timeout corners and his political handlers are giving him the heebejeebees. It’s a mess: it’s politics.
We have to make him do the right things.
Go Jane!
I’ve been wondering this too. Paul Hodes [NH] is not “my” congressman, but I’ve supported him through two elections with my $$$$$.
His web site makes it impossible to send an e-mail to him unless you’ve got a zip code that’s within his district [or unless you can figure out ways to slip through]. ;-}
He’s someone who’s come to the Lake for support, and he should be responsive on this, but I’m not seeing it.
Howie?
Perhaps the progressive community would best spend it’s energy in getting Rahm Emanuel the hell out of the White House, rather than fighting each egregious act of capitulation to the conservative cause, as he instigates them?
I would certainly support any move to get this scumbag out of government once and for all.
