Update 6:22 pm — 15 min. vote being held open FUH EVAH…
Jerry Lewis — returning to regular order on appropriations bill. Disappointed in where the bill is — "high dollar level in every account except for troop funding." That’s going to be their defense — "cuts troop funding." Didn’t the House add $9 billion for planes nobody needed?
"Members on the majority side please take their conversations off the floor" — evidently things are quite heated there.
(One hour for debate on the rule, vote on the rule, then general debate on the bill, then votes on final passage — maybe a motion to recommit if it’s in order.)
Eric Cantor — well he’s had an exciting couple of days. Did he celebrate with a bottle of Grecian? "We can pass a bipartisan bill with a 368 to 60 vote — unfortunately we find a conference report that is vastly different that the bill we approved." If the GOP hadn’t started dragging the kitchen sink into conference, I would be more moved.
"Specific units will have enhanced danger immediately" if the photos that are no different than the ones already out there be released. Doesn’t want the photos to "make their way into brochures" to recruit terrorists. Maybe by the time the pictures were taken the horse was already out of that barn?
Having to listen to endless GOP blather about the detainee photo bill — like I needed another reason to hate Joe Lieberman.
GOP has 17 min remaining, Dems have 29 min remaining.
Now Tom Cole — no Dems speaking. "They assumed we would roll over or be bullied into voting for war funding." There is a certain exquisite irony at hearing the Repubicans utter those words, but their complete lack of self-awareness makes it somehow unsatisfying.
Steny — invoking George Bush and Ronald Reagan. Oh yeah. Well, let’s see him lipstick this pig. He’s earning his money.
"What a GREAT leader Ronald Reagan was. Ronald Reagan said this…" Christ, enough with the corpse humping.
Now he’s praising George Bush and Newt Gingrich…NEWT…did I hallucinate last November?
Looking forward to waking up every morning and combing through the financial records of everyone who fucks us. Because everyone needs a hobby.
None of the Dems want to speak. What, is nobody proud of this vote? Don’t they want to stand up and shout it from the rooftops?
McCotter: Despite the fact that I’m the DCCC’s #1 target, I was never going off the reservation and make a deal with Rahm. Really.
Gohmert: Didn’t know China was a four syllable word. Sort of comes out "Chu ha HAI na."
Interesting — there were 10 votes against the rule: Filner, Heinrich, Kaptur, Kratovil, Michaud, Minnick, Mitchell, Rush and Waters. Four of them are Blue Dogs (Kratovil, Michaud, Minnick & Mithchell).
Boehner: "Demands of the fringe left." Kind of has a ring to it. Like "tan in a can."
Obey is the last speaker. One of the reason that the progressives were nervous about bucking leadership is because they didn’t want to piss off Obey.
"When the world economic situation becomes shakey, it is our obligation to through a hundred billion dollars into a black hole with no accountability, because if we don’t, the next thing you know…Adolf Hiter." No, that’s pretty much what he said.
If this bill is so damn changey, how come nobody wants to stand up and sing about it? Nobody seems to be proudly casting their vote. What’s up with that?
Shorter: "You can’t demagogue terror. Now that we’re in charge, WE get to demagogue terror."
15 min. vote
Marcy Kaptur told Nancy Pelosi that she’d vote "no" but she wouldn’t vote early — they’re trying to force Republicans to vote "yes" by convincing them that they have the votes among Democrats, which will make them want to jump on the bandwagon. Or something.
WTF? :36 to go, only 161 votes?
What’s up with the time? It expired a couple of minutes ago — are they holding the vote open? 132 Dem "yea," 16 "nay."
One Republican voted Yea — possibly McHugh.
Woops — GOP "yea" vote disappeared.
WAY TO GO DEMS!!! You’re going to vote for war funding ALL BY YOURSELF!!!
Two more votes…we bought it.
218 votes for war funding. Yeah. It’s a Democratic war now.
5 Republicans scurried in at the wire once the Dems reached 218.
What, no roll call?

They must be heated … a lot of gavel banging eh?
Oh good – Eric Cantor.
question to self – should I listen to this maroon, or more profitably spend the time just slamming my head against the wall?
Grecian – you weren’t kidding Jane? that is a very unnatural hair color indeed.
ok – I listened.
wrong choice.
Cantor arguing the torture photos again … make sure they don’t make their way into brochures recruiting for al Qaeda?
Stainy is grandstanding. He must have the votes.
hoyer saying how great raygun was. repeating the false narrative about the opening of the soviet union. all in support of the fake emergency endless war supplemental.
not enough advil in the world. but i just took two more anyway.
And Steny is proud of his votes for Republican wars … oh so proud.
hoyer: support the troops! vote for more war!
Hoyer utterly disgusting – Burton predictably nucking futz.
Mike Pence making sense.
(Cue the Twilight Zone music)
McCotter. No matter what you say. Bite me, asshole.
Only 80% for the troops so it is a cut …
McCotter is so dramatic … wonder if he’s auditioning for a role on Bway
Just got home. Is the IMF funding still in this bill? And all the other non-related items?
I don’t think they want to send anybody out there to get targeted. Steny taking one for the team.
Yes.
too bad it isn’t fatal to his career —is there anyway, ANY WAY we can find someone to primary him?
Shame on the dems that are pushing this. War funding aside, this stinks.
McCotter is so dramatic … wonder if he’s auditioning for a role on Bway
and is Gohmert auditioning for a long-defunct role on Mayberry, RFD?
Sure looks like a bit of a mess … all the Rs have spoken but the Ds don’t want their time
listening to the republicans on their right wing rants re economic nationalism makes me almost want to support the imf funding. which is of course completely perverse because i hate the imf and don’t want to see a nickel of funding until there is major reform in governance.
Unnatural coloured Boner. Reminds me of Lenny Bruce’s classic “Thank you, Masked Man.”
listening to the republicans on their right wing rants re economic nationalism makes me almost want to support the imf funding.
yup.
tough sledding indeed.
OT but coming across the wire:
John Ensign (R-Nevada) admits to affair with wife of staffer…..nice family values :)
At least it will knock Sarah Palin off the news…
What do you say we make a list of the congress people that aren’t openly crooked? Just the ones that vote the way they say, or explain their change openly.
I don’t want to hear from any others, any more. I refuse to deal with organized crime in my business, why would I deal with them in congress?
Both Oregon Senators are voting for a public option on health care, confirmed today.
Actually, I gotta say McCotter did a pretty good job of rejecting the allure of cash for clunkers.
I also want to know why these Republicans are so offended by other junk in supplementals? According to Nancy Pelosi, Bush got some of his lawbreaking through on supplementals. They were fine with lawbreaking on supplementals, why not legal pork?
Obey up … remember that video with him yelling at an antiwar activist about how liberal he is …
anyhow, seems they have decided to do some speaking … and Obey attempts to make asking for the supplemental a leftover Bush item!
awfully short list. You could possibly entertain them around your breakfast table.
Maybe they have no right to be offended but I am. I expected better. Between DOMA, DADT, blocking the visitor’s log, this bill…..I’ve about had it with Obama.
Fuck you, Obey.
I heard second-hand from a reader that he had lunch with Obey and Obey said, “bloggers suck.” But then complained that journalists don’t cover appropriations very well.
I guess he didn’t anticipate how Jane was gonna be covering this appropriation, huh?
Obey presenting this as Obama’s last and best chance to wind down the wars.
bullshit – and strict proof demanded.
basically he’s just another politician—but one with a great stage presence.
Obey blows dead goats.
We aim to please.
what public option!??!
stark’s hr 193 or some magical nonexistent bill yet to be written?
I used to think Obey was an OK guy. emphasis on past tense.
Be careful of what you ask for, and all that.
Still, with McCain as the alternative….
was just thinking about that. i’m really hating obey right now.
Hah! Who the hell is buying our goods, Obey?
ok – I’m pretty sure that at one time I supported one of these parties – I may need a bit of a reminder as to which one that was….
Who the hell is making “our” goods?
Wow, is that an echo, Mr Obey?
And that worked out so well.
Hoo, shit, vote. Makes me nervous as a whore in church.
Seconded.
Even better! Or “what goods?”
Marcy Kaptur is not alone in hanging back I see. Bold AND progressive!
rubber, meet road.
And the count begins.
“Boehner: “Demands of the fringe left.” ——-don’t know anyone on the ‘left’ that wears fringes on their clothes. Repubs seem enthralled with meaningless phrases.
voting on ‘agreeing’ to the conference reports CSPAN showing.
you would be welcomed in our church.
OK … I am confused (or just sleep deprived) … are they voting on the supplemental now or on the rule?
Boehner can take his Day-Glo orange tan and go fuck himself.
voting now.
i believe this will be the link to the roll call when the house clerk posts it:
http://clerk.house.gov/cgi-bin…..number=348
everybody needs a hobby.
And as congress-cretins go…..
so how many of our brave progressives are going to have an emergency away from the floor that they just have to attend to right now?
15 minute vote.

A Zen Buddhist with Lakota spirituality and a bunch of tigers waiting at the Rainbow Bridge? *g*

they pull out their magic card and slide it in a slot in boxes that are located at the ends of each row of seats. So they can do it under the balcony in the back row if they like.
I hope they are proud of themselves.
Yeah … no Nancy in the speaker’s chair, no visible votes … such a proud spectacle

what was that thing on Jerry Lewis’ head?
And, like Phil Spector (Specter?) will he have to take it off when he goes to jail?
As long as the need to twist the appropriate number of arms. They must have just called in Rahm and his special squad.
at approximately 1 minute over time:
Ds: 124 yes, 14 no
Rs: 0 yes, 97 no
total: 124 yes, 111 no
Is anyone searching for the Dem outrage when DeLay held the Medicare bill open until he twisted enough arms, yet?
ok – we’re at 0:00. Time for the serious voting to begin.
Such foresight these fools have. Prolly the only time in 20+ years I’m happy with Bill Young.
at approximately 2 minute over time:
Ds: 145 yes, 16 no
Rs: 0 yes, 109 no
total: 145 yes, 125 no
JFK couldn’t round up enough of these people to fill a slim notebook.

Now a REAL vote-2010-2020- “The Decade of Vision”-step right up, patriots.
Made the NPR news
And didn’t the Dem’s complain when the Repubs held open the voting floor?
Probably with Jan Schakowsky’s broken foot.
Profiles in courage, I tell yah!
the final vote was i think: 226 yes, 202 no
just to repeat the expected link for the roll call (not up yet, but will be soon) so we can know who needs thank you calls and who needs to be called out:
http://clerk.house.gov/cgi-bin…..number=348
My 14yo Gigi has more courage than this pack of fools.
Thanks, Selise. Sure am looking forward to the list.
profiles in principled courage. /s
Oh yeah … I’m expecting that and I will make sure she knows what I think about that.
Still, an amazing effort and 32 given the pressure is astonishing!
i’m pretty sure it will be roll call number 348, but just in case i guessed wrongly — here is the main page for the roll call votes:
http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2009/index.asp
amen.
my thanks to jane and all.
i haven’t watched that many votes so carefully, but of the ones i’ve watched it’s not unusual to go over a little bit.
Certainly can’t argue with that.
And to you! Am I counting right — 5 Dems not voting?
Thanks, Jane and the rest of the folks who put forth such effort in this endeavour. We may not have prevailed but the Village certainly knows we’re out here.
…but the Village certainly knows we’re out here.
damned straight.
3 dems, 3 thugs not voteds
Well, pups it’s been grand but it’s time to unlax with a little baseball.
Be good to yourselves, and all other living things.
Namaste
I want to see the roll call.
shoot! i wasn’t checking the numbers for not voting. i’m not sure — i guess it depends on where the last 5 yes votes came from.
there were 253 and 255 D votes (total) for the previous two roll call votes today (347 and 346).
if you are counting 256 possible… the last break out vote i got (which was prior to the final) was Ds: 220 yes, 32 no for a total of 252 with 4 not voting… but more yes votes were added for the final vote.
so i really don’t know… so sorry.
it’s also really helpful to know who will follow through and who will cave. information is power.
the 6 no voteds are at the bottom of your link.
roll call is up!
for the dems:
221 yes
32 no
3 not voting

Well, Jan’s broken foot didn’t keep her away from doing Rahm’s will.
your Democrats did you in yet again.
who could have imagined Lucy would yank that football away, after she promised not to?
all this talk of long memories will come to what, in 2010?
some long odds primary campaigns to shake the trees a little bit, but leave no lasting infrastructure, followed by further exhortations to go and vote (D) anyway?
or working to create a viable alternative to the failed, futile struggle to reform the (D) from within?
this possibility alone will give anti-war voices more leverage and credibility, because, as it stands today, the Democratic Party can gorge itself on corporate bribes and take its co-dependent base utterly for granted – a win-win for them!
and lets not forget where the pressure to fund the stupid, failed criminal wars are coming from – from the President the Progressosphere worked so hard to elect!
the next Afghan wedding party blasted to shreds by the USAF should weigh heavily on yr conscience, if you are a (D) captured war opponent.
good ole big progressive Shakowsky … yes
So Sporkovat, did you call and put pressure on for them to vote No?
Excellent live-blogging/commentary!
Don’t you have a toilet that needs cleaning, or perhaps picking up dog poop in the back yard? Both of those activities look better than listening to Cantor.
Counting — this is pretty fucking cool. We started out with 6 a week and a half ago and wound up with 32.
I count 8 maybe’s delivered into the “no” column by Ms. Hamsher in the last 2 days. That is great work.
Only supposed to take one at a time.
So now the Afghan situation belongs to the Dems along with the IMF. I can’t wait to start e-mailing.
Stupid, spineless Dems. We came close and I am proud of the work that was done. The other side
won’t win them all.
i was trying to count instead of refreshing!
dude, not when i’m listening to hoyer!
‘fraid not, but good on ya, those who did.
as you may have gathered, my interests not in cajoling Democratic politicians who are scornful of grassroots efforts.
Yep. Why don’t we take a stroll down memory lane?
Eisenhower introduced us to Vietnam, but it was LBJ who got saddled with that war. We know how that turned out. Now I’m not comparing the Middle East war to Vietnam, but it is Obama’s war now. Bush may have gotten us there but, even now, he’s long forgotten.
Obama’s really gambling here. He thinks he can wrap things up in a couple years, just in time for 2012. But there’s no way I’m taking that bet. From where I sit, this war will cost Obama a second term.
excellent effort.
Made my phone calls to Dem Progressives. Got wimpy, guilty, can’t confirm responses on the other end mostly, which was a clue to “yes” mostly. Progressive caucus maybe ought to change their name. Partisan cronyism isn’t just a Repub malady.
Meanwhile, Iranians of all ages organizing and putting themselves out there are putting us to shame in this country.
Good to be proactive, though, and thanks for leadership here, Jane, et al. Each time we flex the muscles get stronger. And yes, not to discount the Dems that are stand-up. Cheers to you guys.
Gonna leave thank you messages on voicemail of all the Dem no voters. Thanks for the list.
Wow … now that is a victory!
That’s it!
Obama and the dems now own these wars and the accompanying fiscal crippling of our economy. We are in Vietnam territory….no money for any CHANGE, no oney for social programs, nomoney for anything except corporate bailouts and war profiteers.
Next will come the excuse that social security and the rest of the New Deal protections have to be “amended” because we can no longer afford them due to the growing budget deficits and the $100 billion supplemental.
Cowardice and deception.
Obama is a fucking tool.
I guess Jan is still holding out hope someday for Durbin’s Senate seat .. otherwise … why cave?
You are kidding me. I’m sorry your campaign didn’t succeed in defeating this, Jane, but obv. huge success in any case.
Why isn’t Jerry McNerney on this list? (CA Democrat D-11)?
Is someone hoping he doesn’t have to be counted?
“Thanks, Jane and the rest of the folks who put forth such effort in this endeavour. We may not have prevailed but the Village certainly knows we’re out here.”
Yes, and it will be counting on your vote in ‘10 and ‘12.
Can we finally pledge to stop supporting this broken idea that the Democratic Party is an appropriate instrument from within which political reform is possible?
We need NetRoots candidates, and we need them in municipal and state governments yesterday; to breakdown the barriers that get in the way of people, who don’t carry water for either party, running for higher office.
He voted for more war and billions for banksters
http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2009/roll348.xml
Late to the party here, but Jane – you have achieved something phenomenal here even if not the full victory. I have monitored appropriations action for a long time. A week and a half ago I honestly thought the vote on the supp was pre-greased with just a pinch of pre-vote resistance kabuki on display for the minimum necessary catering to the grassroots. Your leadership showed how wrong I was, and gave the political establishment a giant headache that will have a long-lasting hangover.
How do you figure? The Dems will nominate Obama and the Repub won’t be a peace candidate. No one will have anywhere to go unless we think of a viable alternative.

If you’re representative is on that list, I hope you support whoever their primary challenger is, and if they don’t have one, I hope you’ll run against them yourself.
As an aside… Good ol’ DINO David Wu from Oregon’s 1st voted for this abortion too, but that good ol’ (D) next to his name on the ballot ensures his landslide victory in this district constantly.
It’s entirely unfair to speak of a middle-aged governor being knocked on by a sitting U.S. senator of the Republican persuasion. /s
At least in general he’s got the profanity right. He too could become one of the few the not-so-proud the DFBloggers of America.
Don’t forget the suit. It’s a really great suit!
Ya think they didn’t show courage to vote against the wishes of Jane? Heh. I have a feeling some of them will be hearing from her.
What is the sound of a politician not voting? Do they sit huddled in a corner crying because they know they’re in trouble?
The argument against the photos is not about our troops being at risk should a person of Muslim persuasion go off their nut should they see them, and they would of course. It’s about hiding from the “Christians” in this country what their tax dollar goes to pay for, even now. And then of course the big boys (Obama, Pinetta and the rest) would be really embarrassed. How do you run a war in Afghanistan and keep bases in Iraq without breaking some bodies and hiding the evidence? You can’t. Oh what a tangled web they weave when first they practice to decieve. And so goes Obama’s “great society” rhetoric – down the tube. The American public already feels it’s being lied to for political profit by his administration.
