I’ll be on CSPAN this morning at 8:10am ET talking about the supplemental –jh
I can’t understand for the life of me how Jim Cooper, Mr. Fiscal Purity, who brags that he will not submit any earmark requests for fiscal 2009, can now say he’s going to vote "yes" on the supplemental.
Cooper voted "no" on the supplemental the first time. Then they added $108 billion in guarantees for the IMF. Bulked it up $4 billion in "Cash for Clunkers," then threw in some flu preparedness, and made it into what Howie Klein calls a "Frankenstein" bill loaded with enough pork to bribe just about every member of congress.
This is the same Jim Cooper who is desperate to cut Social Security out of concern for out fiscal future. Who now wants to spend $108 to bail out European banks and their toxic assets.
Cooper is already getting hammered by people in his district unhappy that they can’t get any help from their congresman for local projects like Nashville Metro General Hospital, which is in danger of closing.
Call Congressman Cooper at 202-225-4311 or 615-736-5295 and ask him what gives.

About FDL Action
Can this dope be primaried? Or is he one of those(like Steny and Harry Reid) that “owns” the Democratic party in his area?
Cooper’s going to have a serious problem with those Nashville hospitals. People in his district are pissed about the deaf ear Cooper has turned to their plight in the name of “fiscal responsibility.”
I’m actually happy that this might be the thing that draws a primary challenger into his race. I’ve seen the numbers, he can be beaten.
I was thinking that is a possibility. His district is actually on the blue side, which means that Cooper isn’t representing his district very well at all. If health care reform fails, I wonder what the chances are you could see a fair amount of anger and Democratic primary challengers. Could it happen?
Good Morning, Jane, I can’t quite tell….do you expect these people to make sense? ;)) Just wondering.
My rep Dick Neal D- MA will be voting against the supplemental !!
Thank you Representative Neal !
Jane’s up on cspan.
Oh happy day! Jane on my TV! Break a leg, sweety. Will raptly watch right now. Yay!
Not sure it matters. My district, formerly considered safely Repub, represented by Chris Shays elected Jim Himes who ran as an anti-war candidate. He’s voted for and will vote for the supplemental. Something must have happened on the way to Washington.
He’s ex-Goldman Sachs. Thinks the U.S. financial sys is the best in the world. I think that tells you a lot about Himes. My guess is, like Obama, he’s conservative, in the sense that he agrees with existing power structure, whatever that is. I wouldn’t expect him to be progressive in any way. (Rolling judgement; will modify if evidence to the contrary emerges.)
Just got off the phone with McGovern’s office.
Appreciate the background.
You’re right, but where does that leave us as unhappy constituents?
Good morning Jane. Nice to see you on cspanwj again. It is also nice to see moves to work with the progressive caucus to add leverage to this group via the bully pulpit of progressive blogs. (I guess Barbara Lee gave up leadership to head black caucus?)
Just wondering if it helps the caucus, or the ability of progressive blogs to support the caucus, if you make fun of them on CSPAN?
In the past, this group has published a comprehensive platform-approach. Have you had the chance to read the latest version?

Hey gang, I just called the six California congresscritters listed in Jane’s previous post. I got through on the first or second ring every time. One staffer responded to my message, saying “Absolutely!” All the staffers were friendly and they ARE listening.
I just got off the phone with Cooper’s office, cause he’s mine. They tell me he voted yes. I asked the very nice lady if she could please point me toward a real Democrat to challenge Cooper in the primary, because I was damned ready for a Congressman with a spine. She sounded surprised…
