CQ:
Rep. Lynn Woolsey of California, a leader of the antiwar Democrats, said the White House is threatening to withdraw support from freshmen who oppose the bill, saying “you’ll never hear from us again.” She said the House leadership also is targeting the freshmen. “It’s really hard for the freshmen,” she said. “Nancy’s pretty powerful.”
Please call members of Congress and tell them to stand up to this kind of thuggery.
Update: Ryan Grim, via email:
I was there when Woolsey said that — fwiw, she didn’t say the dnc or dccc were making the threats, she said the white house was….
And she said leadership is pushing it hard, but the specific threats she mentioned were coming from the WH.
Ryan has a write up over at Huffington Post.

That’s the signal – not the time to turn it down, but to CRANK IT UP!
Whoever is strong-arming the freshmen Dems needs to remember that in this day and age of Internet resources, issues just don’t go away like they used to.
Rahm? Nancy? Be fair, or become fair game…
“…you’ll never hear from us again” is the sort of language that increasingly turns off the younger voters that BHO is counting on to support him in 2012. Better put your staff in check, Mr. President.
Who is the administration going to turn to when they need the freshman votes?
Republicans
oh yea. crappola.
reaching across the aisle
Pinch off a little piece here, slap on a parental-consent or gag-rule or marriage incentive provision there… Tre Bingo!
Is it me or is this getting depressing?
(love teh Tre Bingo)
Nah, it’s what we thought it would be, back as we pondered it during the campaign. But we’re living it in real-time now, and it is less fathomable.
the specific threats she mentioned were coming from the WH.
What the fuck. It’s spelled Rahm. R-A-H-M.
See? That wasn’t so hard.
White House panicking much? This is another example of Obama wanting really badly to not have the status quo boat rocked. Nobody better dare challenge him on any issue, because he has an agenda he’s going to follow dammit.
All true.
But I don’t blame him (or Rahm) for having a vision, however blurry.
If, however they expected/wished/prayed that we would sit on our hands – not. He said “Now make me do it.”
Aye-aye, Mr. President.
I can’t imagine that Republicans really will join with progressives to stop it.
More than likely, if the progressives provide enough votes to stop it, the Republicans will change course hold their nose on IMF and vote it through. Then they can complain about IMF later–wasteful spending.
Not saying let up on the pressure. Just saying don’t be surprised.
Hope-n-Change!
like what Philip Zelikow has siad “It‘s just more evidence that this administration is becoming the greatest bait and switch in history. ”
so, what to do? well, in years that are not divisible by two, there is much wailing and gnashing of teeth in the more principled precincts of the progressive blogosphere, but in years that are divisible by two, it is all about turning out the base and voting (D) once again, no matter what!
this system works so great, why change a thing?
He said “Now make me do it.”
Aye-aye, Mr. President.
but he didn’t specify *who* was to “make (him) do it”, now did he?
so far, the president (reference to whom I’ve now reluctantly moved to lower-case) seems to have rather clearly expressed an antipathy toward Higher Left Blogistan.
Scarecrow not letting up, upstairs!
Did Democrats Lie to Us About Only Needing 51 Votes for Health Care Reform?
So the Obama Administration can play hardball. And is it doing so to help homeowners and other debtors, really fix the banks, get the economy back on track, rollback and investigate Bush abuses?
No, it is doing it to continue Bush’s wars.
Anyone still want to call this change we can believe in?
I’m starting to move beyond depressed at this point. Depression is so passive.
I’m heading toward outrage at the blatant betrayal.
Hope in one hand, sh$t in the other, smack your forehead with both. Now that’s “change” we can believe in!! Used to be 2 hands full of s–t.
I feel bad for the students who paid top dollar to be educated on the Constitution by Prof. Obama. Guess the goods news is that some will get jobs re-organizing the Constitution in the Obama era.
“Constitution, that’s just a piece of paper”. – G.W.Bush
This is why we need to have a viable alternative to the mainstream Democrats for supporting candidates. Those who are not beholden to Rahm and his threats, can vote their consciences without worrying about WH pressures.
true that.
to which (D) captured ‘progressives’ always reply “well there isn’t any viable alternative, nyah!”
well to those who see issues of Peace, the Environment, and social justice as more than just wedge issues to use against the Republicans, voting (D) is obviously not viable, either, unless you want things like this on your conscience:

thuggery? sounds very retro. bush-like.
change you can bereave in
