Brad Sherman’s office has confirmed that he will vote "no" on the supplemental according to those lobbying on the issue. The number of Democrats now committed to vote against the bill in its present form is 34. We need 39.
Sherman’s decision to oppose the supplemental is noteable because he one of two who voted for it the first time that have now switched their votes. Sherman, like Peter DeFazio, is opposing the bill because of the inclusion of the IMF funding.
It will be interesting to see how Jim Cooper votes on the bill. Cooper voted "no" on the supplemental the first time — it’s hard to see how adding MORE money for the IMF and for Clunkers squares with his commitment to being "fiscally responsible." He’ll betray everything he’s ever professed to believe in if he switches now and votes for a pork-laden bill like this.
If I were a betting woman, I’d say that number is likely to be at least 35. Cooper and other Blue Dogs are going to have a really tough time in their districts with this vote.

So how are the O people going to ignore or discard all of these people that voted against the supplemental? Can’t. They will need them.
Way.To.Go!
Brad Sherman’s office has confirmed that he will vote “no” on the supplemental
attaboy! doesn’t surprise me too much – he’s always struck me as one of the good guys.
P.S. that picture on top: sherman reminds me of *someone* – one of my nerdy friends, perhaps.
Why doesn’t Jane Hamsher explain why she has an ad on her site from a “PRO LIFE” organization. Is she a capitalist maybe? Anything for a buck. I just saw it here and there is no excuse for that.
Holographic CongressCritter?
Way to stay on topic, jayt :-)
against my better judgment, I retort:
This topic has been covered innumerable times within this blog, and its need for funding. The rest of us recognize that advertising dollars keep this place afloat, no matter the source, and even click on said advertising, without agreeing with the points presented in a any way whatsoever. (brings in more $$$)
Alternatively, how’s about you explain why you persist in hanging around here, EDITED FOR CONTENT?
~~~ModNote: please stick with issues, and resist personal attacks. Thank you.~~~
Names, people.
That means everyone.
Good! Let’s make more phone calls tomorrow.
Again, here are the toll free numbers to the capitol switchboard, thanks to Katymine:
1 (800) 828 – 0498
1 (800) 459 – 1887
1 (800) 614 – 2803
1 (866) 340 – 9281
1 (866) 338 – 1015
1 (877) 851 – 6437
yup – that’s a pretty good resemblance, all right.
But after examining my mental Rolodex, I’m pretty sure that I don’t have any friends who’ve ever been aboard a Star-Trek vehicle.
So far as I know.
how you doin’, newton? *g*
sorry.
While I’m a DS9 fan, this is what sprung to mind the first time I saw Sherman.
Pretty well, thank you. Five to go. Better all the time.
I would be happy to answer your questions directly and politely.
1. I am new here therefore I did not know this topic had been covered. However, I consider it incredibly hypocritical given the constant preaching here about “doing the right thing” and “not compromising when it comes to moral issues”. Accepting ads from pro-life organizations especially in light of the recent horrific killing of Dr. Tiller is in my opinion astounding. It makes me wonder where you draw the line. What about ads for The Aryan Nation selling merchandise? Or the KKK? If you can’t have a successful business model without selling your soul, should you do it?
2. I am here because I feel it is important to share a different perspective in addition to the very one sided opinions put forth for the most part here. I also do so because I think the greatest threat to a one-term Obama presidency will come from the left not the right and that disturbs me. I am sorry you feel that disseminating an opposing perspective makes me a dick and a pain in the ass.
Thank you.
For jayt:
Oh, one more thing I’ve been meaning to ask – Pence has been strangely quiet recently. Am I not watching the right channel, or is he hiding?
He looks like Jason Alexander to me.
ONLY 5 MORE! Way to go ! Thanks, Jane, and everyone for all you do.
Our ads come from networks, we neither see them before they show up nor do we approve them. Our policy is to take ads from everyone if it’s not criminal or obscene, because if we start picking and choosing which ones we accept, we’re implicitly endorsing the ones we do run.
Since your multiple predictions about being “banned” have failed to come true, I’m sure you’ll appreciate the freedom of expression we offer people here who don’t happen to agree with you.
We’ll happily allow you to make your donation recurring.
I retort once again:
I have noticed that your comments tend to assert that the headliners and commenters here are doing a disservice, if not some sort of partisan treason, by opposing policies of the Obama administration.
I can only speak for myself here, but I support policies, not persons. I make no distinction in political affiliation.
Perhaps you believe that Obama is trading off a policy here, in order to achieve some greater good. This is, of course, a possibility, though I’ve seen no evidence of that so far.
If he’s wrong – he’s wrong, and I couldn’t care less what his party affiliation is.
Have you noticed the extent to which his administration is fighting to extend the most reprehensible of the bush, jr policies?
If you believe that Obama is enacting some greater plan, while simultaneously supporting hideous policy, then that’s up to you. I disagree.
Eli is upstairs at the Mothership!
Healthcare Reforminess
Excellent PBS program, NOW, on the domestic terrorism against abortion providers. Very well done, touching, tragic, and powerful.
Great job on pressuring the reps. Thanks for your efforts, Jane!
By the way, is it just me, or has Olbermann been unwatchable lately? Tonight he led off with a Palin v Letterman segment that has been on-going for the last week and closed with a Tim Russert one-year rememberance. Ugh. There are a lot of intriguing stories out there and we are getting this kind of fluff?
I believe that he is indeed, figuratively, hiding. I was just having a conversation about that today actually.
And if I were to be *shudder* advising him, I would advise that he do precisely that. No good reason for Pence, at this moment, to jump into the present republican morass.
I remain steadfast in my prediction that Pence will eventually be the R’s candidate for president, as I put forward here on September 22, 2008. I think that his handlers are merely biding their time, and have probably decided that 2012 would be a year destined for a suicidal effort, opting instead for a run in 2016.
I do appreciate the freedom of expression you support here and I was wrong about that. I think you have an excellent blog and I agree with most of all your perspectives with the exception of some foreign policy related issues like Afghanistan, the photos and the pros and cons of political pragmatism. I think Democrats or Progressives if you prefer should be able to agree to disagree sometimes and do it in a civil manner.
Thank you again for your response.
And I respect that. My bottom line is that in our political system, a cohesive aligned party is far more likely to achieve it’s goals and be re-elected than a fractured divided one. Barack Obama is perceived as the devil incarnate by the right and as he continues to pursue his reforms I believe that will even get worse. Accordingly, I feel the far left does all liberals and Democrats a great disservice by openly and repeatedly attacking him and expending tremendous effort to defeat his initiatives. Do you really think in the long run defeating the supplemental will be a victory. I don’t think so no matter what the merits are. Repeated Obama legislative defeats caused by his own party will be have disastrous results.
I have to agree with you. The whole business about voting against the supplemental is based on morality. While I have no idea of FDL’s bottom line and have not contributed myself, it seems there should be limits. If anything goes as far as advertising is concerned, the policy should be revisited. While I disagree with redfish-I think Obama would be better served by leading and confronting (his use of Goldman Sachs alums is disappointing and won’t work in the end, but that’s my perception)I also agree that his dissenting voice should be, if not welcomed, accepted.
I hadn’t read Jane’s post when I wrote the above which will be a lesson to me. Won’t comment again without reading the entire thread. I don’t know the details of the network, but I would hope a better result could be worked out.
Morality is a funny thing in politics I have found. When you declare a moral line in the sand it begs consistency. Like perhaps, say, the Dalai Lama. I am curious as to why those here who voted for Obama, did so knowing he supports the death penalty?
