Per CQ ($):
Rep. Louise M. Slaughter, R-N.Y., chairwoman of the House Rules Committee, said the conference report will definitely not contain language, found in the Senate’s version, which would bar for three years the disclosure of images of U.S. war on terror prisoners taken from Sept. 11, 2001, to Jan. 22, 2009.
I’m pretty sure Louise Slaughter is a Democrat, but bottom line — Joe Lieberman loses again.

Poor Joe, hope he doesn’t do a Boehner and start crying.
Norm Coleman’s going to cry because:
That is from TPM.
How so? Didn’t he just get the suppression amendment easily added to the FDA/tobacco bill? Aren’t we going to have to play this game right up until the Supreme Court orders the administration to obey FOIA?
Is anybody gearing up to get it stripped from the FDA bill?
This hardly seems over.
It would be sweet if Hojo were rebuked by a repuke, but yeah, slaughter IS a dem.
OT
Carrie Prejean was fired.
Has that bill even been voted on in the House?
lol. you don’t mess with The Donald. yay.
quick look at the google says, yes. it’s up for a big tussle in the senate.
Conference Report Will Not Contain Lieberman Photo Amendment”
why would Congress wanna pass an amendment with Lieberman’s photo in it anyway?
I went to the Dark Side – Weekly Standard – and found this:
(this sounds very GOP to me…I would hope the ACLU comes before clumsy private contractors)
FOIA is a law, it’s not the Constitution, and Congress can change it, the courts can’t prevent this. If both Obama and the Senate Dem leadership want it, I don’t know how long the House can play whack-a-mole. Lieberman will keep attaching it to different bills and Reid will help him. If he can attach it to a bill that enjoys substantial bipartisan support, the House progressives won’t be able to stop it.
The consequence will be that FOIA will be gutted, and before long investigative reporting into what happened during the Bush days may carry substantial legal risks.
Joe-Noes just won’t go.
Why is Reid still the Majority Leader?
The American People lose every time congress acts.
Name me one bill congress has enacted with presidential signature within the last, say, 40 to 50 years, that serves the needs of the American People.
Your point is well taken, but I’m sure there are other examples.
Initial FISA legislation in the 70’s looks great now.
Civil Rights legislation of the ’60’s ended legalized white supremacy.
Also, Congress hasn’t completely overtuned a women’s right to choose, which was primarily granted by the courts.
Thanks Jane.
Are you kidding?
The longer that amendement gets pushed around the better the chance of getting it defeated.
No.
Apart from some stuff enacted during the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, what piece of federal legislation since has benefited you and your fellow citizens?
Answer: Some environmental legislation enacted under Nixon.
Cynthia Kouril is upstairs at the Mothership!
Pecora in Perspective: Everything Old is New Again — the Pecora Commission Redux
Sometimes I wonder how it got passed in the first place. It was passed in a climate much different that the one Congress operates in now. Congress wasn’t as full of shivering cowards and perhaps didn’t have as much to hide.
Civil Rights Act.
Louise Slaughter is a Democrat, a quite progressive one, and she represents a district near Buffalo NY. She has been chair of the Rules Committee since the Dem’s re-took Congress in 2006, and knows quite well how to use the powers of that committee. She was born and raised in E. Kentucky, and still sounds like that, but in fact she is one of the women elected to congress fairly early on, and she is exceptionally sharp.
She is sending a bill to the house floor that does not contain Lieberman style lanugage, but does contain instructions to the conference not to agree to such language. It will be sent to the floor with a rule that will not allow amendments to that portion of the bill. Pelosi has backed Slaughter fully on this.
Joe Liebeman is a total, cowardly schmuck. I know because I was his roommate at Yale and liked him personally and thought that he was a progressive Democrat who could really be prominent on the national stage (I even predicted in college that he could be the first Jewish President of the United States.)
You don’t know how glad I was wrong about that prediction. He has proven to be a lying sycophant for George W. Bush on the Iraq War and an apologist for the Bush-Cheney torture regime. In short, Joe Lieberman, my former friend and roommate, sorry to say, is a mendacious, imperialist, scum-sucking pig.
The truth may hurt, but it’s still the truth. Joe didn’t fight in the Vietnam War and none of his children or grandchildren have fought in either Iraq or Afghanistan. Instead, he’s happy to send poor American recruits to fight and die instead of him or his family.
That’s what I would call hypocrisy.
Joe Lieberman, my former roommate and friend, is a major, raging militaristic proponent of an immoral war.
He may likeable (and I truly liked him as a roommate), but he is also truly a liar (conscious or unconcious) about Iraq and 9/11 (just like Bush and Cheney.) He can’t help it. He lies about everything to do with Iraq or Israel or the Middle East. It’s in his nature, like the scorpion and the frog.
Sincerely,
David Wyles
